Introduction

The recommended specifications are provided to inform customers on a typical configuration of equipment necessary to run Jonas Enterprise and related e-Products at the time of writing of this document. These specifications are updated on a quarterly basis throughout the year. Refer to your IT professional for an exact assessment of your computing needs.

Hardware used should be approved based on the current Microsoft Windows® Catalogue Listing for 32 and 64-bit environments. Jonas recommends redundant disk-drive hardware, in order to protect your data.

Jonas does not recommend running in a wireless environment for reliability and performance issues unless running sessions via Remote Desktop or Citrix, since issues may arise with dropped connections. Jonas has been fully tested using Microsoft Virtual server, HyperV and VMWare. If Jonas will be installed on a Virtual Server, please note that this task should be performed by your IT professional.

Software should include Client Access Licenses for Microsoft Windows® for each planned user that will be connecting to the server. If using Remote Desktop, then Terminal Services Client Access Licensing should also be purchased. The opening of TCP port 8351 to our web server IP addresses is needed, in order to allow the sending of historical records from your Jonas server to the e-Products.

The customer’s IT resource should make the determination whether a system meets the requirements for Microsoft SQL Server by cross-referencing their computing environment to Microsoft’s recommendations found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=SQL.100).aspx For more information, please consult our Frequently Asked Questions within this document.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Will Jonas run in a 64 bit environment?

A. Jonas will run and is supported on a Windows 64-bit operating system, but it will not be able to take advantage of the 64-bit performance benefits, since it is a 32-bit application.

Q. Are there any services that should be stopped prior to installing Jonas or any Jonas updates?

A. Yes. Any anti-virus auto protect applications that scan files on access should be temporarily disabled and Windows User Account Control should also be temporarily disabled when running any Jonas server or workstation installs or any Jonas updates.

Q. What network protocol should I install on my workstations? A. Use TCP/IP as the sole network protocol.

Q. How should I set up my network if I use Windows XP workstations with a Windows 2008 server? A. If you leave the SMB2 network protocol enabled on your Windows 2008 server and you have

Windows XP stations connecting to it, your network will experience a slowdown. In order to avoid this problem, you will have to turn off the SMB2 on your Windows 2008 server, and then you will have to make sure that any Windows 7 computers in your domain have SMB2 turned on. No change is required on the XP workstations.

Q. When installing Jonas on a Terminal Server, do I need to run the Workstation Setup?

A. Yes, the current version of SETUP.EXE will work for Terminal Server user profiles just like LAN workstations. It can be run from the <Jonas drive>:\GJCWIN\TOOLS\ directory on the Jonas server. Additionally, Jonas requires each work station to be mapped to the Jonas share in the same manner, so that the Jonas location is consistent on all workstations.

Q. Will Jonas run over a VPN?

A. Jonas requires that a work station maintain 100% uptime in connectivity to the server. Disconnections can cause other users sessions to crash, and can also cause corrupt data. Jonas recommends using a Terminal Server/Citrix solution for remote users, not a VPN.

Q. What are the benefits of running Jonas in a Terminal Server /Citrix environment?

A.

Increasingly users are employing WAN solutions in their LAN environment. If you have over 20 users, please consider a Terminal Server or Citrix solution as both of these solutions increase network performance and offer the flexibility to work remotely. For better performance, do not plan on installing Jonas on a Terminal Server. When a Terminal Server role is added to a File Server, it devotes most of its resources to the Terminal Server role and Jonas performance will suffer. For more information about Remote Desktop, please consult the relevant Microsoft site at

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/ee236407

(7)

Q. Can I use Windows XP Pro as my file server operating system? A. No, a server operating system must be installed.

Q. How much disk space is needed on average for installing Jonas?

A. The space required would depend on system usage and activity level. A typical Jonas installation would require about 20 Gigs of free space.

Q. What kind of access permissions do Jonas users require?

A. Users require all rights on the shared Jonas folder except for Full Control, Take Ownership, and Change Permissions. Users should have full permissions on their local C:\GJCWIN\ folder. When first configuring the Jonas share, ensure that the Group or User named “Everyone” has Change and Read permissions checked. Also, we recommend the share be mapped to the folder containing GJCWIN, and to use the letter J: for the mapped drive (i.e.: J:\GJCWIN).

Q. How do I set up my printers for Jonas?

A. Jonas text forms are written to be compatible with Hewlett Packard printers. If you are printing text forms in Jonas, the preferred driver is PCL5e or PCL6 or a driver which emulates one of these. Jonas supports network printing, as well as local printers. The spool settings should be “Start printing after the last page is spooled”, and the spool data format should be “RAW” / “WINPRNT”.

Q. How should I set up my antivirus?

A. Virus checkers should exclude the server directory <Jonas drive>:\GJCWIN\. Do not scan this folder in an active manner, so as to avoid service disruption and possible reactivation. A virus scan scheduled afterhours is ok.

Q. What should be my backup settings?

A. Backup Software on the server should exclude the<Jonas drive>:\GJCWIN\LIB directory to avoid service disruption and possible Jonas reactivation. As a minimum, the <Jonas drive>:

\GJCWIN\DATA directory should be backed upon a daily basis as well as the CUSTOM folder. If you have purchased any of our e-Products, you will have to create daily backups in SQL Server 2008 or a dedicated third-party backup software.

Q. What should I know before installing my Jonas workstation software?

A. You will need local administrator permissions on the workstation in order to install and run Jonas. Each work station must have a unique Terminal ID. It is specified for each workstation as part of the workstation install or by changing the Jonas.INI file. The naming convention is as follows: two uppercase characters, leading character must NOT be numeric, and not composed of

characters other than 0-9, A-Z. (terminal ID ‘GJ’ is reserved). Typically examples are: T2,B1, B2, AT, SL, etc. For Remote Desktop users, once the installer finishes, their copies of JONAS.INI should be placed under their profile folders, and the Terminal ID setting on this file needs to be edited. Q. I currently have a Small Business Server. Will it work with Jonas?

A. Yes, Small Business Server 2008 Premium is supported.

(8)

Q. What is the recommended network speed?

A. Jonas recommends a nominal physical link capacity of 1 Gigabit per second. The Gigabit network should be supported on all nodes including the Jonas server, switches and workstations. Additionally, the workstations should not be sharing the network with VOIP phones.
