dear friend,

Catch the Spirit! Last year the idea for the

Arbutus Senior Spirt Awards was launched.

These awards “Recognize, Appreciate and

Thank” seniors who volunteer their time and

efforts to create positive change in the lives

of others. The event sparked a movement

beyond an awards event with a mission to

create on ongoing campaign to assist seniors

with a goal to live an active, meaningful life.

It is in this “spirit” that Arbutus fulfills its

mission each day to provide a meaningful life

to those individuals we serve. The following

donor report highlights stories of people who

have impacted the lives of Arbutus residents

through their spirit of giving.

As you flip through this report, you will find

individual stories of outstanding philanthropic

effort, a list of charitable benefactors who

support our mission, and tireless volunteers,

board and staff, who truly demonstrate a

spirit of giving — without all of you, our

mission and progress would not be possible.

I am truly blessed to be a part of the Arbutus

family and on behalf of the board of directors

and staff we are truly grateful for your

continued support.

nancy and george Wargo

A Charitable Gift Annuity — A Win-Win

Nancy and George Wargo are long-time residents of Arbutus. “We moved into our

cottage eleven years ago when we were young enough to enjoy all Arbutus had

to offer and to have the security of knowing we would have access to health care

resources if we needed them,” says George. George is an active volunteer who is

of-ten seen escorting residents from Chapel or out strolling the campus with Sassy, the

Arbutus therapy dog, one of George’s best friends!

The Wargo’s recently set up a charitable gift annuity to benefit Arbutus. “It is a good

investment in the organization, and it offers us a good rate of return. It will provide

us income for the rest of our lives,” states George.

A gift annuity is created when a donor transfers cash or securities to Arbutus in return

for a fixed payment that continues each year for life, no matter how long the

desig-nated annuitant(s) may live. When the annuitant(s) pass away, the remaining principal

becomes a gift to the organization.

The Wargos appreciate the enhanced security their gift annuity provides. They can

count on receiving quarterly annuity payments and enjoy knowing they are

support-ing Arbutus. “We like gettsupport-ing those checks each quarter,” remarks George. A

win-win for the Wargos and Arbutus.

The Benevolent Care Fund — Active Giving

Don and Susie Anderson are spending their retirement days filled with active and

rewarding experiences. You might find them gliding down the ski slopes of Chili or

traveling across the country. At the end of the day, it is their desire to help others

that give them the greatest reward.

When asked why they choose to financially support Arbutus, Don replied: “It was

easy to include Arbutus in our charitable giving. Over the past thirty years, we’ve had

five or six relatives live at Arbutus, including my dad, Uncle Henry, Aunt Irene and now

my mother.” The Andersons make monthly contributions to the Benevolent Care

Fund to support residents who have outlived their resources.

“We highly endorse Arbutus because we’ve experienced first hand the quality of

care provided to our loved ones. I’ve visited friends in other facilities, and I’m so

impressed with what Arbutus does with limited resources.”

Arbutus is Family

Arbutus is well known throughout the community for having the most caring and

compassionate employees. Bonnie Camblin is just one example!

Bonnie has been at the helm of the Arbutus Business Office for 41 years. The spirit of

service is in her blood. As the daughter of the late Pastor Don Sease, former Arbutus

Administrator, Bonnie grew up with the tradition of service to others.

Bonnie began her career in the 70s, working part-time in the Arbutus laundry while

she was a college student at the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown. After graduation,

she was asked to help out in the business office, and as they say, the rest is history.

“I really feel at home here at Arbutus. I can’t image working anywhere else. Through
