Safe, Kind & Calm On Our Learning Journey Together

Following the Ministry of Education COVID-19 Health & Safety Guidelines for K-12 Settings and SD5 Protocols for School Operations, found in the links below, we look forward to welcoming our students to ÉIDES as well as continuing to connect with you throughout the year.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/education/administration/kindergarten-to-grade-12/safe-caring-orderly/k-12-covid-19-health-safety-guidlines.pdf

https://www.sd5.bc.ca/Documents/COVID-19%20Protocols%20for%20School%20Operations%20(March%2031).pdf

For the 2020/2021 school year, we continue to operate in Stage 2. According to ministry guidelines, elementary schools will still be organized into classrooms as students’ primary learning environment and have the option to create learning groups of up to 60 students and staff who can interact more regularly. Schools are considered a controlled environment by public health. This is because schools include a consistent grouping of people.

All staff, adult volunteers and visitors, and all Grade 4 to 12 students are required to wear a

non-medical mask or face covering at all times while indoors at school and on school buses, subject to some exceptions (detailed on Page 30 of the updated SD5 Protocols) Students in Grades K to 3 are encouraged to wear masks, but are not required to do so.

If you have any questions or concerns after reading this document, please call us!

Learning Groups

What is a learning

group? o Students will be organized into learning groups for in-class instruction. This helps to limit contact and potential exposure. The learning group will consist of their regular classroom teacher(s), students and regular scheduled Education Assistants.

o Each elementary learning group will be comprised of a maximum of 60 people (will most likely be two classes paired together)

o Administration will keep a detailed learning group list for contact tracing purposes

o Learning Groups will be constructed with staff input but will most likely be same grade learning group and sharing of coatrooms as much as possible

o Example, One Grade 2 + one Grade 2/3 - Your child is in grade 2 and is part of a grade 2/3 learning group made up of two classes.

o All curriculum instruction for your child is provided by your child’s classroom teacher with the potential that the teacher of the grade 2/3 class may switch with your child’s teacher to provide some instruction in areas where they have particular skills and interests. o Within a learning group, physical distancing should include

avoiding physical contact, minimizing close, prolonged, face-to-face interactions, and spreading out as much as possible within the space available.

o Young children may not be able to consistently reduce physical contact.

o During break times (mornings, recess, lunch, after school), students may want to socialize with peers in different learning groups. When interacting with peers outside of their learning group:

o maintain physical distance (2m) when indoors. If a student is unable to physically distance, the student should socialize within their learning group or where they can be supported to physically distance.

o All staff, adult volunteers and visitors, and all Grade 4 to 12

students are required to wear a non-medical mask or face covering at all times while indoors at school and on school buses, subject to some exceptions (detailed on Page 30 of the updated SD5

Protocols) Students in Grades K to 3 are encouraged to wear masks, but are not required to do so.

How do they work? • The composition of the learning group will remain consistent for

all activities that occur in schools.

• Within the learning group minimal physical contact should be encouraged, but a physical distance of two meters does not need to be maintained

• If students would like to interact with peers in other learning groups they may do so outside during breaks as long as they are maintaining physical distance (outdoors is a lower risk

environment)

All staff, adult volunteers and visitors, and all Grade 4 to 12 students

are required to wear a non-medical mask or face covering at all times while indoors at school and on school buses, subject to some

exceptions (detailed on Page 30 of the updated SD5 Protocols) Students in Grades K to 3 are encouraged to wear masks, but are not required to do so.
