FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK:
Hello, August! This, of course, means that autumn is not far behind! I love fall, especially in Pennsylvania. There is just something about the warm days and cool nights. Yay! for the cool nights. I
can’t sleep when it’s warm and muggy. Perhaps that is why I am always so grouchy in the summer. I can’t get comfortable, either during the day or the night. Willis Carrier is one of my heroes! Don’t know
who he is? Hmmm, well, do some research and the first patron to come in Monday, August 2nd and tell the person at the desk who Willis Carrier is, will win a small prize!
One way to relieve grouchiness and tension is by coloring. The Library will once again have Adult Coloring Club meetings every Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. beginning August 2nd. You can
bring your own coloring supplies or borrow ours. Check in at the reference desk before coming into the meeting room. As before, this is an Adult program and is for our patrons 18 and over only. If you
have children that wish to color, they may do so in our Children’s area.
Here’s another bonus for surviving summer: Fine Free Fridays! Every Friday in August will be a fine-free day. If you have overdue materials that belong to us, return them on a Friday in August and
we will waive your fine – no questions asked. We just want to see our materials returned to us, so please send them home!!
Our Friends of the Library group held a book sale on the rainiest day of the Festival in the Park. While attendance was great, we wanted to give another opportunity to support our Friends Group. The Friends will be sponsoring a Pop-Up Book Sale on Thursday, August 12th from 5 – 7 pm. It will be
somewhere in the Barclay Square area. The Library isn’t taking donations for that sale. But be sure to come support the Friends and their efforts for our Library. So, what is the Friends of the Library? They
are a group of citizens in the Punxsutawney Memorial Library area who firmly believe in supporting the Library and its efforts to provide quality materials to the patrons of the Library. They are not the
Board of Trustees. All the money they raise goes towards purchasing physical materials for the Library, not paying salaries or utilities. Currently, the Friends are working towards purchasing those books in series that are missing from our collections, Caldecott (Picture Books) and Newbery (Chapter
Books) Award winning books missing from our collections, and purchasing a new printing system for our microfilm machine.
Now that our Summer Reading @ the Library programs have ended for another year, thank you to all those who registered and participated. Miss Nina has said that new programs will begin again in October. As always, I welcome your feedback, request your suggestions, and do my best to rectify
your complaints in keeping with our current library policies. Please keep them coming!
Happy Reading!
Jen Soliday, MSLIS
