OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH
Occupational Safety and Health is a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health, and welfare of people engaged in work or employment.
As a secondary effect, it may also protect co-workers, family members, employers, customers, customers, suppliers, nearby communities, and other members of the public who are affected by the workplace environment.
Occupational Health should aim to:
1. promote and maintain the highest degree of physical, mental, and social well- being of workers in all occupations;
2. place and maintain the worker in an environment suitable to his psychological and psychological capabilities;
3. protect workers from risk resulting from factors adverse to health, and
4. prevent workers from resignation due to health caused by poor working conditions.
Proper housekeeping was popularized as “Japanese 5S’ in 1980 by Hiroyuki Hirano. Most industries had practiced this philosophy since it is useful not just for improving their physical environment; but also, for improving their thinking processes.
Hence this 5S represents;

2. Set in order (Seiton) is to systematize meaning arranging things in order.
3. Sweep (Seiso) to clean your workplace thoroughly.
4. Sanitize (Seiketsu) where high standards of good housekeeping are maintained.
5. Sustain (Shitsuke) is a standard of work that should be maintained at all times. Maintains S1-S4 through discipline, commitment, and empowerment.
5 Steps Corresponding Actions
Seiri (Sort) Separate between necessary and unnecessary
Seiton (Set in order) Apply the dictum’ a place for everything and everything in its place
Seiso (Shine) Clean up the workplace and look for ways to keep it tidy.
Seikitsu (Standardize)
Maintain and monitor devotedly to the first three 5s.
Shitsuke ( Sustain) Obey the rule to keep the workplace 5S right, hold and gain.
Benefits of Proper Housekeeping (5S)
✓ the workplace turns into cleaner, safer, well-organized and more pleasant;
✓ effective utilization of space;
✓ workflow turn out to be smoother, more systematic, and non-value-added activities are reduced;
✓ lessened time for searching tools, materials and, documents;
✓ machine failures are reduced since clean and well-maintained equipment breaks down less frequently. It also becomes easier to detect and repair before breakdown occurs, therefore, extending equipment life;
✓ errors are reduced leading to making defect-free products;
✓ consumables and material wastage are decreased;
✓ self-esteem and satisfaction of employees improves; and
✓ the output of the organization improves together with the quality of products and services.
