MonDay, 1 July 2013

After the first day of presentations, participants get the opportunity to visit Kronborg Castle and the Danish Maritime Museum. Later, dinner will be served at Restaurant Trekosten.

kronborg caStle & tHe DaniSH MaritiMe MuSeuM

A coach will take the participants from the hotel to Helsingør. where they will visit Kronborg Castle. One of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe, Kronborg is situated on the extreme tip of Sealand at the seaward approach to the Sound. This part of the Sound is only four kilometres wide, hence the strategic importance of maintaining a fortress at this location.

The history of Kronborg dates back 600 years.

The castle is popularly associated with Shakespeare’s drama about Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.

However, for generations of Danes, a visit to Kronborg has been associated with a tour of the dark and dingy Casemates to see the statue of Holger Danske. Slumbering and with his arms crossed over his sword, he sits there in Kronborg’s underground shelter ready to awaken and take on the enemy.

Legend would have it that when the Kingdom is threatened by an external enemy, the stone figure will turn into flesh and blood and Holger Danske will rise in defence of the fatherland.

On 30 November 2000, Kronborg was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The Danish Maritime Museum has been situated at Kronborg since its establishment in 1915, and now occupies most of the first floor of the castle.

The museum embraces Danish shipping from the 15th century up to the present day. Various artefacts, ships’ models, paintings, photographs and information placards are used to tell the story of the Sound Dues, the Napoleonic Wars, China trade and trade with the former Danish colonies in India. Other topics covered are the African slave trade, plantations and the story of the Danish West Indies until they were sold to the USA in 1916.

In addition, the museum describes a sailor’s life at both war and peace from the reign of Christian IV up until the present day. There are separate permanent exhibitions about navigation, sea charts, lifesaving equipment, The Lights and Buoys Service, wooden and iron shipbuilding, on sail, steam and diesel and about tramp shipping and liner services.

reStaurant trekoSten

Restaurant Trekosten is located at Nivå Harbour which is on the eastern coast

between Helsingør and Copenhagen. Participants can enjoy a gorgeous view

out over the Sound and the harbour while they dine.

After the morning session on Wednesday, participants will be brought to Force Technology and Wonsild, after which they will be given a portand canal tour and then tour Deisel House. In the evening, the participants will be left to enjoy Tivoli and Copenhagen on their own.

Force tecHnology

A guided tour of Force Technology (DMI) in Lyngby usually includes a visit to the towing tank, the wind tunnels and the state-of-the-art bridge simulator, depending on the circumstances of the day at Force Technology. After the tour, the participants will have lunch at Force Technology.

wonSilD

After lunch, participants will be taken to Wonsild for a presentation on Brokerage.

Port oF coPenHagen

The participants will enjoy a tour of the port and canal.

DieSel HouSe

DieselHouse is a museum built around a huge B&W diesel engine from 1932, which for more than 30 years was the largest diesel engine in the world. The engine is still operational and will be started during our visit. DieselHouse tells the story of the technological development and marine propulsion, coupled with the history of the Copenhagen energy supply, the B&W shipyard and the MAN Dielsel & Turbo engine factory.

tivoli & coPenHagen on your own

The beauty of Copenhagen is that the town centre is largely traffic free, which, coupled with the fact that most of the streets and buildings are laid out according to the medieval street plan, makes its sights and attractions very accessible on foot. A multitude of world-class museums and galleries;

streets full of specialist shops; dozens of restaurants; and a tempting array of nightlife.

The city’s main shopping area is centred on the longest pedestrian street in Europe, Strøget, stretching from the Town Hall Square to Kongens Nytorv where you find Magasin du Nord, the biggest department store in Scandinavia.

A visit to the charming 17th century streets surrounding Strøget is also worthwhile.

Tivoli was founded in 1843 and was inspired by the so called romantic pleasure gardens of Europe. Romantic in the sense that they were landscaped according to the English tradition of forming naturalistic ornaments, as opposed to the French style with its strong, geometric lines. Tivoli’s founder, Georg Carstensen (1812-57) had seen pleasure gardens on his journeys through Europe, and in 1841 he applied to King Christian VIII for permission to establish and run his ‘Tivoli & Vauxhall’ for five years. Since then, people from all over the world have enjoyed Tivoli.

Tivoli is located in downtown Copenhagen right across from the Central Station. There are plenty of rides, restaurants, gardens, theatres, live music and entertainment - there is something for everyone.

All participants are encouraged to explore, relax and have a great time.

But don’t forget to find your way back to the hotel to get a good night’s

sleep in preparation for Thursday’s full, exciting day of presentations

and case studies!!

Be prepared for a little bit of rain, as the summers in Denmark can be a tad

unpredictable. Hopefully, there will be a lot of sunshine! Daytime outdoor

temperatures during the summer months can get up to 28 or so degrees

Celsius on the sunnier days with some humidity. Please note that there is no

air conditioning in the hotel rooms, as it is not typical in Denmark to have air

conditioning - most of the year it’s not needed! - You might want to bring a

light jacket for the cooler evenings.

BIMCO SuMMer ShIppIng SChOOl 2013

Since the inauguration in 2002, more than 500 participants have participated in this full week, highly intensive, crash course in all the shipping-related matters we can possibly cover in one week. The course is a unique blend of basic principles on Bills of Lading, Voyage and Time Chartering, Laytime and Demurrage – mixed with practical examples and case studies on LOI’s, co-mingling of cargoes, and the effects of piracy on shipping contracts - just to mention some of the topics covered!

The backbone of the programme is the case studies, where participants are divided into groups to find practical solutions to the realistic situations presented. As in real life, there is rarely one fixed answer to a situation and the discussions between the groups and tutors form an important part of the learning objectives.

On the last day, it all comes together in a full day exercise “The Big Fixing Game”

where the participants compete to fix ships and cargoes using all the knowledge they have gained over the previous days to get the best commercial results!

Several unique events, including specially organised dinners, a visit to Kronborg Castle and the Danish Maritime Museum, a visit to Wonsild for a presentation on broking, bridge simulators at Force Technology, a live demonstration and start-up of a huge diesel engine topped up by a tour by boat of Copenhagen and the port are also included in the programme.

The BIMCO Summer Shipping School is residential and the participants stay at the conference hotel for the duration of the course. The “boot camp” atmosphere is a very important part of the programme. Therefore, the hotel accommodation, excursions and all meals – with the exception of Wednesday evening – are included in the fee.
