Research  interests

Adaptive Information Systems

Pierluigi Plebani contributed to PAWS (Processes with Adaptive Web Services): a framework for flexible and adaptive execution of managed Web service-based business processes [A.4, A.5]. In particular, his contribution is focused on service discovery. As a result, he developed URBE (Uddi Registry By Example) that implements a semantic-based matchmaking algorithm based on the evaluation of similarity between service interfaces described with WSDL or SAWSDL [A.3, A.6, B.7].

Green IT

Pierluigi Plebani has been involved in the EU funded research projects GAMES and he is currently involved in the EU funded research project ECO2Clouds [B.4, B.5, B.6]. The research is about the monitoring

infrastructure to make possible the energy profiling of applications, and adaptive techniques for data centres energy saving and for reducing CO2 emissions of cloud-based application [B.1][B.2].

Web service quality

Research on Web service retrieval also considers quality aspects [A.1] and a matchmaking algorithm is proposed [B.8, B.9]. Quality offered by a Web service provider should actually not correspond to the quality really perceived by final users. Influence of networks and devices about quality of a Web service has been analysed and a model able to capture such an influence is proposed [B.14, B.16].

He also contributed to the definition of WS-CoL (Web Service Constraint Language) and Ws-ReL (Web Service Recovery Language): WS-Policy based languages for describing monitoring rules and recovery actions. These two languages are used to monitor and adapt BPEL processes [B.12].

Sensors as a Service

Pierluigi Plebani has also investigated the relationships between Web services and Sensor Networks to monitor dangerous good transportations and to coordinate rescue teams in case of accidents. In the MIUR-FAR EASyLog project he contribute to the definition of an architecture able to monitor containers where sensor nodes are installed on. In the same project, he also proposed MAS (Micro Application Server): an application server implemented on the least-capable CLDC (Connected Limited Device Configuration) micro devices [A.2]. In The MISE-Industria2015 Sensori project, he is investigating the role of service as a sensor paradigm in the monitoring of buildings to improve their energy efficiency [B.3].

Emergency Management Information Systems

A research topic Pierluigi Plebani started working on in the last period, is about the role Emergency Information Systems during the phases of preparedness and risk reduction. On this topic he is involved in the EU funded project KNOW4-DRR for implementing a Knowledge Base System able to support the knowledge definition and management for reducing the risk before the emergency occurs [C.3, D.2].
