Course Description and Goals
This is an entry level course into emergency medical care. It will prepare students for Practicum in Health Science-Emergency Medical Technician class which will have opportunity to get certify students from the National Registry and Texas State Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. This course provides the skills and equipment training necessary to maintain basic life support for sick or injured patients. Additionally, this course provides the student with an opportunity to develop and improve their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills that are so valuable in every health care setting.
Course Resources
The text used for ECA will be Emergency Medical Responder: First on Scene by Baudour and Bergeron. This is the text adopted by Cypress Creek Emergency Medical Services. There are several books in classroom and students are allowed to use textbook in class or CCR class time but they must remain within the classroom. Course Assignments
Both written tests and skill tests, along with projects and research projects will be given. Students are expected to maintain a course notebook with all warm ups, lecture notes and vocabulary notes and daily assignments. This notebook is to be maintained as a cumulative book for the year in preparation for the final exam and the National Registry exam. It will be a major grade for every posted grading period.

Daily Assignments (50% of Grade of 6 Weeks Grade): Daily Writing (Warm Up), Quiz, Daily Assignments
Major Assignments (50% of Grade of 6 Weeks Grade): Written Test, Skill Test, Research Paper, Group Projects

Late Work Policy: Homework and classroom assignment that was turned in late will get deducted points, 10points deduction/day. Students can not turn in work 1 week after the deadline.
Make Up Work: If the student was absent, he\she is responsible to gather all the materials from the instructor or classmates. If students know the absent in advance, he/she need to contact instructor for instructions.
Absences or Retest: If student was absent for the test, students are responsible for scheduling time the instructor after school. Re-testing is only allowed as per Cypress Creek Policy, however all students who score below a 75 will be given the opportunity to retest after reteaching. Student need to attend tutoring sessions after school and schedule retest with the instructor.
Extra Credit
Because learning is the highest priority in every course at Carl Wunsche Sr. High School, extra credit opportunities will be limited to assignments or tasks that are connected to course learning objectives and may not be used to replace a major grade. Students may NOT donate items or volunteer their time for extra credit in any course.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Literacy: Reading and writing skills are essential to success during and after high school. Due to the significance of these skills, all classes at Carl Wunsche Sr. High School hold the following expectations for all students:
● All written responses on all assignments will be in complete sentences. ● All students will read and write weekly in every class.
This course is a combination of lecture, videos, discussion, demonstrations, skills practice, workbook activities, and multiple choice scenario assessments. It necessitates student participation at both an individual and small group level. The use of mannequins, audiovisual aids, role-play and hands-on lab / skill demonstration activities will be incorporated for teaching purposes. These activities are designed to ensure the competencies required to successfully master the Texas Department of Health objectives for the First Responder level and to prepare the student for the First Responder
certification examination with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
Tutoring
Tutoring is available after school on Mondays and Thursdays. The time must be scheduled with the instructor. Any student who is having difficulty meeting the class objectives will be assigned mandatory tutorials.
Clinical Participation

Health insurance will not be provided for the student. If the student chooses to obtain certification, Extrication activities, Skills testing, and Precepted hospital and ambulance internships are required components of the course. All activities are coordinated in cooperation with our community partner, Cypress Creek Emergency Medical Services.
Definition of Skills
The following section lists the skills that may be practiced in the classroom and performed under the direct supervision of the instructor.
1. Patient assessment, history and interview, vital signs
2. Oxygen therapy, oropharyngeal suctioning, and mechanical aids to ventilation 3. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and/or use of AED
4. Bandaging, splinting, traction splinting of the femur
5. Patient packaging, spinal immobilization, extrication from vehicles and homes etc.
6. Blood glucose sampling and administration of oral glucose. Students will be expected to perform finger needle sticks upon each other in the classroom. Body Substance Isolation Precautions will be followed by all students in the classroom, per CCEMS policy and procedure. If students do not follow appropriate precautions or policy and procedure, they will be asked to leave the program under CCEMS and will no longer be allowed to participate in this skill in the classroom.
7. Assisting with equipment checks, stocking and/or restocking of supplies, cleaning of the units or station, and other crew duties as assigned.
Practicing Beyond Your Certification
Students are prohibited from performing any skill that has not been learned with a return demonstration in the classroom. Performing any advanced level skills beyond your certification requirements is a violation of TDH Rule 157.51{2} {D, Q, and S}. Any student violating this policy will be dropped from the program and reported to the Texas Department of Health for disciplinary action.
Attendance
It is imperative that class is attended each day. The Texas Department of Health requires 66 hours per semester in class in order to receive a certificate to take the National Registry exam. This class is regulated by the TDH guidelines and we cannot change any of them.
Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty, or plagiarism, includes copying the work of someone else and claiming it as your own (not using proper citations), regardless of gaining permission from the other person. Colleges and universities take plagiarism very seriously, and penalties often include removal from a course or from the college. It is important that CWHS students understand the importance of academic honesty. Plagiarism in any course will lead to repercussions determined by the teacher and/or Academy Principal as well as possible removal from National Honors’ Society.

Professionalism and Courtesy
The student must be respectful of the people that they are working with, and maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times. Professionalism commands respect and the student deserves to be respected, while maintaining professionalism.
Conduct
It is expected that each student will show respect to all members of the class, including all instructors and preceptors, fellow students, and visitors to the classroom. The student is required to bring all books and materials to class on a daily basis. Students are expected to sit in their assigned seats and to follow directions the first time they are given. Students will be obligated to remain on task during all class sessions. These rules will help prepare them for clinical rotations.
