Research & Education
Across the country, people turn to teaching hospitals every day for
specialized surgeries, life-saving care, and complex treatments. Academic medical centers are where medical knowledge continuously evolves and new cures and treatments are found. They are also the training ground for
tomorrow’s physicians.
Meridian upholds a mission of training the next generation of health care
professionals. Tomorrow’s physicians must understand how to incorporate patients into decision-making. They need to know how to relate to diverse cultures.
They also need a business mind so they can understand how to work within the complexities of insurers.
K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center is the academic hub of the Meridian Pediatric Network. With the support of Riverview Medical Center and Ocean Medical Center, pediatricians are actively researching ways to improve pediatric care and offering the latest treatment options.
As a patient of the Meridian Pediatric Network, you’ll benefit from multi-disciplinary collaboration among physicians. You’ll have access to the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options and a full network of compassionate caregivers each step of the way.
In addition to providing education and research to our physicians, we also provide them to you. Booker Health Sciences Library includes a free and unique service that provides you with answers to health questions based on research. Simply call, fax,
or e-mail the library your health question. In response, the library staff will put together a packet of scientifically-based information with references and mail it to your home free of charge.

Diagnosis
The symptoms of a child’s illness or injury may be as unique as the child himself. Through the Meridian Pediatric Network, our team of pediatricians and specialists are available to
diagnose and treat the most mild to the most severe disability, illness, or injury. Each of our hospitals is home to Pediatric Care and Emergency Centers that provide treatment for children of all ages in an environment that is designed to cater to the unique needs of children. For minor emergencies, such as sprains, stitches, and stomach illnesses, you may also visit the Ocean Care Center in Point Pleasant — the first satellite emergency room in New Jersey — open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
At K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, our leading subspecialists have access to technology like video EEg monitoring for epilepsy and pulmonary testing for asthma. And with some of the most sophisticated imaging services in the region, a conscious sedation program to keep your child comfortable during procedures, and a pediatric radiologist, our goal is to minimize radiation exposure in a pain-free environment.
In some cases, families struggling with learning, behavioral, and developmental disabilities may be referred to our Child Evaluation Center for programs on:
• Autism • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
• Down Syndrome • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Regardless of whether you have brought your child to the hospital for treatment of a chronic condition or an emergency, surgeons from a spectrum of specialties — including the most experienced general surgeon in the region — are ready. From urology to orthopedics, ear, nose and throat to neurosurgery, Meridian is proud to be advancing pediatric surgical care at the Jersey Shore.
When recovery from more serious injuries or illnesses, intensive care for our youngest patients is also available:
• Pediatric Intensive Care Unit– K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in the area with dedicated space, monitoring equipment, and board certified pediatric intensivists all day, every day, to provide complex care from respiratory failure to surgical recovery to neurological conditions and trauma.
• Neonatal Intensive Care Unit– K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital is one of a select group of state-designated Level III neonatal intensive care units in New Jersey, equipped with the most advanced technologies and leading neonatologists.
Recovery
The impact of a difficult diagnosis or extensive treatment on a child and the child’s family can be overwhelming. For that reason, the Meridian Pediatric Network offers
rehabilitation, support groups, and physical and speech therapy to help continue the healing both mentally and physically.
Our pediatric rehabilitation specialists work with families to address the specific needs of the children they see. Our specialized team consists of audiologists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists who evaluate, treat, and assist children of all ages with a variety of neurological, orthopedic, and developmental needs.
Whether born with an illness, just diagnosed with one, or suffered a
traumatic injury, your child may experieince trouble performing day-to-day
activities. Occupational therapy can help children improve their cognitive, physical, and motor skills. And, just as important, it can help build their self esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment for those performing a task for the first time or relearning one that they have done a million times before.
On the road to recovery, therapy often extends beyond physical healing and into emotional healing. Our unique art and pet therapy programs enable children to use creativity and positive thinking to express their feelings as they deal with tragic events and recovery. In fact, the pet therapy dogs can often be seen stopping in on the pediatric unit for a visit, bringing smiles to kids’ faces as they hug, pet, and play with these cuddly friends.
The Early Autism Center at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital recently received $1 million in grant funding to further expand our screening capabilities for children with developmental delays to include Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Children may also be referred to the Infant Toddler Assessment Program (ITAP) by the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the foster care system, and physicians to provide comprehensive screenings for high-risk infants and toddlers when there are concerns about a child’s development. In the course of treatment and diagnosis, we know that sometimes therapy is required to manage a child’s behavior and provide thoughtful programs custom-tailored to the child’s age, diagnosis, and the impact on the entire family for areas such as mood disorders, behavioral issues, problems with peer relationships, and impulse control.
To address chronic conditions, the Meridian Pediatric Network offers highly specialized centers for diagnosing: asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, and autism. Experienced subspecialists
at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital are also leaders and board certified in treating medical conditions and surgical procedures for:
• Critical Care • Ear, Nose and Throat
• Endocrinology • gastroenterology
• general Surgery • Hematology/Oncology
• Infectious Disease • Neonatalology
• Neurology and Neurosurgery • Orthopedics
• Opthalmology • Radiology
• Pulmonology • Sports Medicine
• Trauma • Urology
No matter which Meridian hospital you choose, when extensive consulting or treatment is needed, we offer a dedicated transport ambulance to bring infants and children safely to K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. Our transport team consists of specially trained nurses, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), pediatric resident physicians, and board-certified pediatric critical care attending physicians skilled in the transportation of critically ill infants and children.
Treatment
Whether we are treating your child for a chronic condition or an unseen emergency, our hospitals provide, nursing staffs that are nine-time Magnet Recognized for outstanding care, and child-friendly facilities for any diagnosis.
In the event that your child comes to us with a traumatic injury, from a fall or car accident for instance, the Jersey Shore Regional Trauma Center is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with surgeons and resources needed to increase the chances of survival from serious injuries. It is the only Trauma Center in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Support groups are available for our pediatric patients and their families who are coping with the stress of a particular illness or injury. We are home to a diabetes program that has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association for excellence in self-management education.
Home
Sometimes, especially where children are involved, the best healing happens
at home with their parents, family, friends, toys, and their own bed. For this reason, many of our rehabilitative and therapeutic programs extend from the hospital to the home, with suggested participation from families and friends.
Whether you are looking for assistance caring for an ill or injured child after returning from the hospital, adding safety
monitoring tools, or need medication management help for your child’s chronic illness, Meridian At Home’s Pediatric Care Program offers the most complete range of in-home personal assistance and technology solutions.
And, when you’re in need of medical supplies — including pediatric nutritional supplements, blood sugar tests and strips for diabetes, thermometers, and nebulizers — visit
MeridianAtHomeStore.comfor a full range of medical equipment and products delivered right to your door.
Good Pediatric Care Starts with You
Our mission is to improve the health of the community, and we want to partner with you, schools, and the many civic organizations with similar goals.
Unfortunately, you can’t predict when your child is going to need to see a doctor. In those emergency cases, calling 911 and getting to the right hospital are crucial to the most positive results.
It’s a good idea to check in with your doctor with regular checkups and catch conditions early if they occur. Being connected to a physician who is connected to the Meridian Pediatric Network is a good way to ensure access to subspecialists who are expertly skilled in and focused on the treatment of children. It also links you to a host of specialty and supportive programs available to you right here in Monmouth and Ocean counties. When it comes to your child’s health, this is where you want to be.
