New Features

NVSD v1.0.1 is an update to the initial release of BakBone’s next-generation disk-based

data-protection solution, which is built on BakBone’s Open Data Protection Platform

(ODP). NVSD’s disk-based backup and data deduplication option reduces storage costs

with its powerful byte-level variable-block-based software deduplication, which packs up

to 12 times more protected data into the same storage area for a 92% reduction in the

storage footprint. Hardware costs are reduced by using existing storage infrastructure

instead of requiring specific drives or appliances.

NVSD shrinks backup windows with its post-process deduplication option, which can be

scheduled outside the backup window. Additionally, administrators have increased

choices, including the ability copy or move data between NVSD Instances and Devices,

to virtual-tape library (VTL) or tape-based devices to place redundant backups in offsite

locations for failover and disaster recovery purposes.

(2)

NVSD seamlessly integrates with NetVault: Backup (NVBU), which means you can:

„

Add NVSD Instances to NVBU as NVSD Devices and target these devices for

backup.

„

Administer NVSD Devices, which includes the ability to add, remove, scan, view

statistics, and use media-group labels.

„

Enable deduplication for specific jobs. When combined with job-level encryption,

this allows you to enable deduplication for the primary backup and encryption for

secondary copies, making it possible to transfer an encrypted copy to an offsite

location or secondary storage, while the primary deduplicated backup resides on

an NVSD Device.

NVSD provides the following high-level features:

„

Simplified disk-based backup

„

Byte-level, variable-block software-based deduplication

„

12-to-1 deduplication ratio

„

Hardware agnostic

„

Post-process deduplication

„

Rapid deployment with existing infrastructure

„

Seamless integration with NVBU

„

Job-level deduplication

„

Shared-storage support

„

Easily extendible

„

Retention-policy support

„

Heterogeneous-platform support

NVSD v1.0.1 provides the following new features:

„

version has been added as an option to NVSD CLI and displays the current

version of NVSD that is running

„

Internal performance improvements

-Known Issues

Description

NVSD v1.0 is not compatible with the following NVBU Plugins – Compatibility will

be provided in a future release of NVSD:

„

NetVault: Backup NDMP-based Plugins including:

„

NDMP Plugin

„

SnapShot Manager Plugin

„

SnapMirror to Tape Plugin

„

SnapVault Manager Plugin

„

NetWare Thin Client

„

NetVault: Bare Metal Recovery

NVSD Compatibility with McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (Bug 1329) – If you install

NVSD on a Windows system that also runs McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, problems

might occur during data transfers between NVBU and NVSD. If problems do occur,

BakBone recommends that you disable the virus checker.

No Automatic Migration of Staging and Chunk Store (Bug 1477) – If you add or

change the path for the Staging Store and/or Chunk Store, NVSD does not currently

include a mechanism for moving files from the current Staging Store or Chunk Store

file-system path to the new file-file-system path.
