Five-Dice Divination Answer Key

(based on the work of Peggy Vickers)

This approach to dice divination gives you thirty different potential fortunes. Divination expert Peggy Vickers, who laid out this system of five-dice-interpretation in her book, The Home Book of Fortune

Telling, specifies that the inquirer consult the five dice only on a monthly basis, rather than a shorter time

frame. This answer key therefore pre-supposes the consulter of five dice is inquiring how the coming month is going to go for them, not how the next week or two will transpire.

Accordingly, you may find the numeric meanings assigned to dice-throws 1 through 30 will often vary significantly from the meanings assigned to the same numbers in two-dice or three-dice throws. Vickers states that Mondays and Wednesdays are considered unlucky days to consult the dice, whereas Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are considered good days to consult the dice. No particular reason, it’s just one of those rules.

How to Cast Using Five Dice

The dice are kept in a cup and shaken with the non-dominant hand, while asking or praying for a true answer, because this is to be the inquirer’s fortune for the next month. Using the non-dominant hand is important, because one is asking for their fortune, not dictating it, and the non-dominant hand is considered the receiving hand. The dice are thrown into the circle, and the following principles for this are to be kept in mind:

 If on the first throw, two or more dice land outside the circle, then all the dice are returned to the cup and shaken, then thrown again.

 If the same thing happens a second time, take it as an omen that now is not a good time to consult the dice. Put them away and consult them another day.

 If, however, only one die lands outside the circle, then the caster should read only that one die as their fortune for the coming month, and should disregard the other four dice which landed inside the circle.  A clarifying note: if the caster makes a throw wherein four dice land outside the circle, leaving only one

die in the circle, that one die in the circle cannot be read as the fortune for the coming month. One die by itself can only be read as the definitive prediction for the coming month when it lands outside the circle.

1

This is a fortunate number with very fortunate qualities, so the signs for the near-future are good. Much activity lies ahead, and it will almost certainly result in prosperity of all kinds, especially financial rewards. You may begin an important new project, enterprise, or phase of your life in the coming month. It could be you will take on a leadership position of some kind. As this is the number of the self-starter, the coming month would be a good time to take the initiative and start something. If you are contemplating going into business for yourself, there could hardly be a better number than this one.

2

This, the number of receptivity, is considered an evil number in five-dice casting. Unhappiness, born of selfishness, could bring contention and enmity, either for or from the caster. Vast, almost unlimited possibilities for trouble lie ahead, so careful preparation is a must if the caster would avoid them. If all due care isn’t taken, these troubles could take the form of accidents—and possibly, one fatal one. Take this number as strong warning not to travel, as traveling under this influence courts disaster. This is a time for staying close to home-base and not taking risks. This is the number of partnerships, so a relationship or two could be at issue now.

3

This, the number of creativity, expression, and sociability, radiates a beautiful influence, and constitutes a good forecast for the person rolling it. A person rolling this number is likely to be someone of great wisdom and integrity, a good soul who takes action and is capable of tenderness. Or, they could have a creative streak in them, and the coming month will be a highly-creative one. Harmony and perfect love lie ahead, as well as plenty, fruitfulness and the power to make important changes for the better. This number may foretell a rise to true greatness.

4

This, the number of order, structure, security, foundation, and work, is a fortunate number in other ways. Good health, a firmness of purpose, endurance and even a long life are forecast. These qualities will enable the caster to overcome brief, minor obstacles to success and happiness which may crop up during this period. It certainly doesn’t mean an easy time for the caster, but the outcome of all endeavors will be good ones, so long as you keep your eyes on the prize, and keep working on attaining your ends. The caster may find themselves working harder than usual this month. Now may be a good time to lay the foundation for something big.

Meaning:

5

(outside the

circle)

The Romans thought this was an unlucky number. Some dice diviners still consider it unlucky. Others consider it the number of demons. The casting of this number outside the circle foretells a period of struggle, strife, competition, anger, and battles—but eventual justice for the one rolling it. Fire should be avoided during this period, and the caster should be alert for fire-dangers at work and at home. If married, there may be marital troubles ahead. In truth, 5 is the number of transition and change, which often means traversing rough waters. Such is forecast for the caster in the coming month, but try to keep a steady hand on the tiller and persevere—this period will end.

5

(inside the

circle)

To throw this number in the circle means five ones—mystical forces are at work. Someone in the caster’s environment has evil intent. There may be plots and schemes afoot which, if successful, will do harm to the caster. They may even be betrayed by loved ones. The caster should be dubious about any supposedly ‘fool-proof’ financial opportunities offered to them during this period. The caster should be neither too-trusting nor too-generous to others until after this period ends, staying close to home and keeping their own counsel, even if it means saying ‘no’ to someone who is prodding the caster to violate these self-imposed restrictions.

6

(outside the

circle)

If the six is rolled outside the circle (just one die), then the caster faces a rather dubious future. This number is sacred to Venus, and it does predict great success in love matters during this period. But because it falls outside the circle, strife, troubles, uncertainties, and arguments are also forecast. (Jealousy could be a factor here). If the caster is married, there may be an extra-marital romantic entanglement in the picture, either their own or their spouse’s, which may well lead to marital strife and possibly divorce.

6

(inside the

circle)

The caster may well be about to lose something of great value to them, especially if this number-cast is the result of a four and a two combination of some kind. The caster should prepare themselves for this prospect, and reconcile themselves to this reality, for acceptance will make the loss easier to bear. Six is also the number of home and family, so domestic concerns may take center-stage during this time period. (It’s also possible the loss may be home or family-based). The caster may be feeling ‘chained’ by domestic obligations for the duration of this period.

This number forecasts all sorts of good luck on the horizon. In the five-dice system, this is a number of fame, honor, success, triumph, reputation, and victory, so the caster can reasonably expect some measure of any or all of these in the relatively near-future. The caster should banish any fear of failure at trying something new during this period, because they will likely succeed. Success and victory are the sure-reward for any project or endeavor they are engaged-in. The number of the intellect, religion, philosophy, spirituality, and mind over matter, the caster may be showing this side of themselves to others during this time period, or indulging in it.

8

The number of justice, attraction and repulsion, separation, destruction and menace—but also a number of great promise, because it is the number of money, material success, and the successful businessperson. A highly-regarded number in Asia, to roll the eight in the five-dice system means both eight blessings and eight misfortunes will come to for the caster in the month ahead. In the end, it will even itself out to what is essentially justice for the caster. In this time period, the caster will receive exactly what they deserve. Karma has the caster’s address now and, no matter where they live, she is due to pay them a visit this month.

9

An exceedingly-prosperous number in most cases (nine is the number of culmination), it does also have a potential for evil. The caster is on the brink of

solving an old mystery, which will be greatly-rewarded. The caster may be in for a promotion at work, a political success, or is about to purchase property. The fruits of their labor are about to be reaped, but virtuous and thoughtful conduct must accompany this, or the caster’s hard-won rewards could be lost—that’s where the potential for evil comes in. Nine is humanitarianism and creativity, but also endings, so something could come to an end during this time period. There could be a confrontation, or a breaking-point reached.

10

This is a strong number, and an indicator of good things to come. In the Tarot, this is the number of the Wheel of Fortune card, so the goddess Fortuna could show the caster favor this month. This is also know as the ‘Hand of God’ number and at times this month, the caster may feel as if the Hand of God was at work behind much of what they will experience. This number is also associated with fortuitous beginnings, so something good could be starting in the caster’s life during this time

period. The caster is encouraged to take maximum advantage of any new beginnings in this time period. However it manifests, certain good luck lies ahead in

This number is regarded as unlucky by some diviners. Naomi Watts, in her book

The Art of Nameology, calls it the ‘lighting bolt’ number—not a neutral number, by

any means. Misfortune of some kind is likely at hand, but it will be temporary, and out of adversity will come true happiness. Power, violence, energy and a great need for bravery are either predicted-for or called-for from the caster. They will be facing a fearful venture, at the end of which lies happiness. “Happiness and success lie at the end of the Eleven Paths of Darkness, and this number is a portent that you are about to enter those dark regions” says Vickers.

12

A highly-mystical number in the occult, this number crops up repeatedly in spiritual or mystical settings. Associated with the Hanged Man in the Tarot, this number is a warning the caster is either in, or soon will be in, physical danger. Troubles both great and minor are soon to come, resulting in sadness for the caster, and the only benefit they’ll derive is the experience itself and the lesson they learned by it. Great changes are in store for the caster, possibly a school-of-hard-knocks lesson, and possibly a financial or material loss, but such losses may reward the caster with spiritual blessings. They could come out of this month a better person.

13

While this number does warn of potential death, destruction, deception, or loss, this is also the number of faith, hope, revolution, and rebirth—it is not by accident this number is associated with the Death card in the Tarot. Ill-fortune may lie ahead for the caster, but with a little faith and hope, any reversals may be overcome and great success achieved. In the five-dice system, this number can also foretell great luck in love, bestowing the gift of a happy and harmonious marriage. Any ill-fortune this month will be followed at some point in the future with a degree of happiness in love that few people experience. The caster is therefore encouraged to keep their spirits up—a better day is coming.

14

This number indicates that prosperity is to come, but only after numerous conflicts with antagonists. Continuous changes are in the forecast for the days ahead, and much energetic movement (1+4=5). There may be a great deal of indecision, either on the part of the caster or on the part of others with whom they must deal, keeping the aggravation level up there. The caster may also be feeling sexual urges during this time, that put their heart in jeopardy. As if all this weren’t enough, there’s also some measure of physical danger in the picture, so they should be alert and prepared for this. The caster will have to stand alone and firm against all opposers in the coming month.

This number is considered a bad omen, but not the worst. It does hint at some misfortune to come. Associated with the Devil card in the Tarot, all the potential troubles that card implies are present here. Carnal desires, either their own or those of others around them, may cause troubles for the caster. Straying spouses or teens/pre-teens looking for an opportunity to get intimate with the object of their desire are a possibility this time period. Take no flirtations seriously now, they likely don’t mean it, and are doing it out of habit. This is not the time to indulge in any other addictions either, such as drugs, alcohol, or gambling. Vices can be a source of danger or trouble for the caster during this time period, so they should shun them.

Shun also any get-rich-quick schemes this month, as they won’t work out like they promise. Don’t be too quick to trust any newcomers on the scene at this time either, as they aren’t what they might first appear to be.

This is a mystical number. The occult and paranormal mysteries may exert a fascination for the caster during this time period. This can bring danger too, so they should be measured in their response.

This card hints that a revolution is soon to happen in the life of the caster, so they need to move with great caution until they understand what form this revolution will take. They shouldn’t make hasty decisions, and should give careful thought to every move they make this month.

16

This month will bring bad luck, but it will be bad luck tempered with clemency. The potential misfortune to come will come about because of the caster’s own weakness or character flaw, which will be aided, abetted, and accentuated by the subversion of others. This bad luck will probably present itself in the form of some physical danger, an apparent ‘accident’ which will not really be an accident. Someone may possibly persuade the caster to put themselves in a position of physical danger, then ‘trip the switch’ accidentally (on purpose, oops, sorry—not). The caster could be in for a cosmic pratfall in some form this time period. Worse, they may be able to look back and see how they brought this on themselves.

Or, instead of one major disaster, it could be that a series of minor defeats are to come in the days ahead. The caster needs to keep in mind that all this apparent ‘bad luck’ is temporary, and that this, too, shall pass. Indeed, this may be a necessarily-difficult time which lies ahead for the caster, a set-up for some good fortune further down the road, or simply as a character-building time. Associated with the Tower card in the Tarot, one of that card’s meanings—disaster or tragedy which brings enlightenment in its wake—is very much at play this month.

17

This number is associated with the Star card in the Tarot, and all the good, bright, hopeful energies that card represents are present this month. A number of good health, beauty, hope, and bright prospects, the caster will be under the control of some very lucky stars during this time period. Any creative endeavor they’re involved in will do well, and they’ll find their thoughts are flowing freely now. Painting, collage, sketching, music, or starting to write that book they’ve had in mind for years are all good pursuits for this month, as creative pursuits are likely to turn out well now. Fortune smiles on the caster in the days ahead.

18

A good number in three-dice throws, it’s considered an entirely bad number here. Associated with the Moon card in the Tarot, the caster may be surrounded this month by deception, treachery, and the sort of people it’s a bad idea to associate with. The caster is in danger of making serious errors in judgement this month, and love-troubles could be coming as well. There is a real danger here that someone of disreputable character will identify the caster as a kindred-spirit and treat them accordingly, sucking them into an environment of risky and/or illegal activity. The person who throws this number should be highly dubious and alert in the month ahead, lest they be drawn into un-sought trouble. It’s a real possibility now.

19

This is a truly lucky number. Associated with the Sun card in the Tarot, and all the positivity that card represents. A marriage or engagement could happen during this time period. If already-married, the caster will enjoy a time of improved relations. They could pull off a business coup, and/or achieve some other successes which will bring them esteem and honor in the eyes of others. If the caster has been oppressed, held-back or imprisoned in some way, liberation is at hand this month. The caster will almost invariably possess brilliant qualities, but they must guard against excessive vanity now, for it could interfere with or even undo the great good luck of this period.

20

There are many obstacles just ahead, and many decisions which must be made, and each time the caster makes a decision, another obstacle will arise in its place, subsequent to the prior decision. This is the number of the Judgement card in the Tarot, and judgement is a key theme for this month, with every decision needing to be weighed carefully. Extreme care should be taken not to get into dangerous situations now, for such could prove fatal. This is not a good time for travel, trying something new, or risk-taking. The caster is likely to be the sort who acts on impulse, and this trait won’t serve them well right now. It could be they’ve thrown this number in order to draw to themselves experiences which will cure them of this habit.

This is the number of Absolute Truth. Honor, realized hopes, advancement, a higher social position, and the esteem of others are indicated, but only for the person who has worked hard and persistently. This number is associated with the Universe, or the World card in the Tarot. The honest and upright caster who throws this number has all the rewards of the Universe within reach, for now comes the pay-off for their effort. But this number also constitutes a warning for the deceitful caster. Being the number of Absolute Truth, any small treacheries or deceits committed by the caster during this time period will return on them a thousand-fold. Karmic reaction is extra-strong this month.

22

In some Tarot decks, the Fool card isn’t the 0 card, it’s the 22 card. As this curious little factoid hints, any misfortunes the caster may experience this month may likely be born of their own foolishness. This is a strong warning of marital trouble ahead for the married caster. Obviously, it’s not a good time to get engaged or married, either. Arrogance now could lead to disaster and even divorce, so keep that ego in check. This is also known as the Master Builder number, so the caster could either start or become involved in some project that could turn out to be a much bigger and longer project than they anticipated. Hello, Fool card. Be careful not to bite off more than you can chew this month! The temptation to do so will be there, so beware. Don’t be a fool at this time.

23

This is a very lucky number generally, and the caster may expect many successes, both great and small, in the month ahead. They will receive any help they need from superiors, or from experts in the requisite fields. They can expect protection by powerful individuals who actually want to see them succeed. This is the Royal Star of the Lion number, a highly-fortunate symbol—it’s just possible the caster may attain some measure of fame in this time period. Twenty-three is also associated with transformation, so the caster could find their life is transformed in some significant way this month.

24

A most evil and unlucky number. Some sort of misfortune brought on by fury, jealousy, or a temper-tantrum, with lasting effects, is a real danger for the caster this month. This number is associated with the Cain & Abel story. Someone’s

poor anger management skills may bring sorrow, misfortune or tragedy into the

caster’s life this period. Either the caster, or someone in their environment may be compelled by circumstances to undertake a sad journey to a distant place, possibly never to return. The only up-side to this forecast is it brings with it the possibility of a very influential woman entering someone’s life, a woman who may alleviate some of the misfortune, bad luck, sorrow, and pain which accompanies this number.

25

This is the number of gain-through-strife. The caster throwing this number will have to overcome many obstacles and problems during this time period. They may have to fight many fights. The caster should strive to show a quiet, passionless strength throughout the whole ordeal. The only benefits the caster will derive from this whole trying time will be a greater sense of their own strength, the experience they gain, and the lessons they learn. The caster will come out of this period of conflict a stronger and wiser person. This is the ’School of Hard Knocks’ number par excellence.

26

This number indicates great evil is at hand. Twenty-six is the number of Jehovah— that’s Yahweh in Angry-Mode. The caster could experience great losses because of speculative ventures they’ve been persuaded to take part in, which don’t pay off as expected. The caster is likely either in an ill-fated relationship, or being influenced by persons of ill-intent during this time period. Greed will be a major factor in the troubles to come, and only through a genuine spirit of generosity and charity may these troubles be avoided. The caster should avoid starting any new business ventures, making any major investments, or taking any significant risks now. And while they’re at it, the caster should take a good, hard look at the people they associate with, and why.

27

This is a lucky number which promises great joy in the month to come. If the caster is possessed of a fruitful, creative intellect, then they will soon reap the rewards of that particular talent. Such success may even bring with it unexpected power and authority of some kind. Almost all new undertakings begun this month will succeed, so long as they are well-intentioned projects to begin with. The symbol of this number is the fearsome Spectre, but oddly-enough, it brings only good things in the forecast for the time period it covers.

28

Of all thirty numbers which can be thrown by five dice, this number is regarded as perhaps the worst. At the very least, it’s in the bottom-five. Great losses may come about this month as a result of the caster’s lack of wariness or caution. These losses will likely result in satisfactory gains for unscrupulous associates whom the caster may make the foolish mistake of trusting too much. The caster likely has some connection to a person or persons of ill-intent, so they need to be extra-cautious this month regarding any solicitations to commit their money, energy, time, or reputation to seemingly-worthy or ‘can’t-miss’ opportunities. Certainly, they shouldn’t listen to such appeals by strangers or those they don’t know very well. This is another ‘take-a-good-hard-look-at-the-people-around-you’ number. And when found, the caster should shut any shysters they find out of their life.

There’s going to be a power struggle in the caster’s life this month, a power struggle which possibly leads to violence. This may happen in the caster’s own relationship, or that of someone in their environment. Regardless of the circumstances, the caster is forewarned that thing will come to a head in the near-future. Two is the number of relationship, but nine is the number of endings and culmination. They both add up to eleven, the ‘lightning bolt’ number. Lightning is going to strike this month, and things will never be the same. If the caster is one of the principals involved, they’ll need to expend great energy if they are going to win this power struggle. Certainly it will demand great courage before it’s over. This number also hints that a small degree of bad luck is going to occur, but no misfortune of lasting-importance. Whatever happens this month, the caster is encouraged to persevere, for they

will experience brighter days again.

30

A bright period lies ahead. The caster will experience the goodwill of friends and associates. They will succeed in any love affair they’ve got going-on, and will experience even greater happiness if they are married. Alternatively, this number could mean they will succeed greatly in any business ventures they are involved in. If the caster has been wanting to start a self-improvement program, to become a better person, or to attempt something they’ve never dared try before, there’s hardly a better time than this month to do it, for the energies present now will shield them from failure in anything they attempt. Thirty can have an all-powerful energy to it.

This number has also been associated with introspection and retrospection, so if the caster has been considering going on a retreat, or going on a spiritual pilgrimage, this would be a good time to do it.
