Laboratory Safety
Lab dress code includes but is not limited to:
1. Students must provide their own disposable lab coat.
One disposable lab coat is required for the semester unless it needs to be replaced due to a spill or unsanitary condition. Disposable lab coats are available for purchase at the campus bookstore and are to be worn at all times throughout the semester while in a laboratory classroom regardless of the activity being conducted.
Lab coats are absolutely required to be worn in lab at all times.
Each student will be given a gallon sized zip-lock bag to store their lab coat in. Write your name on the lab coat and bag. Lab coats will be stored in a storage bin and kept in the lab classroom. Lab coats are not allowed to leave the lab room. Disposable lab coats will be collected and destroyed on the last day of lab meeting.
Cloth lab coats will be collected, autoclaved, and returned to the student on final exam day.
Dissection tools, gloves, and goggles will be provided and available in the laboratory for use. You may bring your own gloves and goggles if desired.
2. Closed toed shoes that cover the entire foot (top of foot too). Socks worn with flip flops are not permitted.
Booties covering the foot are not permitted.
3. Clothing must be long enough to cover the knees while seated.
Pants showing any skin above the knee (holes in pants, sheer yoga pants, shorts, short skirts or dresses, tank tops showing the stomach area, etc.) are not permitted.
4. Backpacks must be stored on classroom wall hooks or shelves or under the desk table out of the isle to avoid becoming a tripping hazard.
5. Lab benches must be wiped down with the provided disinfectant spray BEFORE and AFTER lab. 6. No food or drinks.
No visible open or closed food, candy, beverages, or water bottles are allowed in the lab.
Safety Training: Students will be provided with laboratory safety training during the first week of class and will be required to sign a document acknowledging rule comprehension. Students are expected to follow all safety rules including rules related to proper lab attire.
Students not dressed appropriately to enter a Blinn designated laboratory room will be counted absent and will not be able to enter the laboratory room, participate in, or make-up assignments/activities until appropriately dressed. If lecture is held in a designated laboratory room, all lab safety rules (including attire) still apply.
Please refer to the safety document presented in class and posted on eCampus.
Inappropriate lab attire may affect your grade since it will result in not being able to enter the lab classroom and complete graded lab activities.
Absences Policy
The student must be present in either the physical classroom or remotely via Zoom AND be actively listening and participating to be counted present.
Excessive absence may lead to administrative withdrawal from the course. Upon accumulating 2 unexcused absences, you will receive an e-mail from the college and must meet with the instructor concerning your absences before returning to class. Upon accumulating a total of 4 unexcused absences, you will be administratively dropped from the course due to excessive absence.
In order to begin the reinstatement process, you must have a meeting with your instructor and complete a reinstatement form. Reinstatement decisions are finalized by the Dean of Biology.
Excused Absence Make-Up Policy:
It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor via e-mail of an upcoming excused absence. Failure to provide notification before the excused absence date forfeits the opportunity to make up any assignment.
Missed exams due to an excused absence must be made up within 1 week of the missed exam date.
There are no make ups or extensions for lab activities, homework, or quizzes. These activities are made available in advance and the lowest 2 grades of each are dropped due to this reason. SmartBook reading assignments are bonus and therefore will not be allowed to make-up.
There is no final exam make-up day/time. Not taking the final exam results in a zero. Unexcused Absence Make-Up Policy:
It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor via e-mail of an upcoming unexcused absence if possible. There are no make-ups for missed exams due to an unexcused absence.
Note:
If you experience COVID-19 symptoms or must self-quarantine, you are still required to attend the live-remote Zoom class sessions.

Arrive on time for the remote class meeting session. Log on to the virtual classroom using their Blinn log-in.
Wear proper clothing and appear properly groomed just as if attending class physically in person.
Show a full face view in the camera frame with sufficient background lighting at all times during the live Zoom session. Maintain a posture in front of the camera that is conducive to active learning and participation.
Maintain an appropriate virtual background that is appropriate to a school setting and clear of distractions. Show respect for other classmates and keep background noise muted.
Failure to comply will result in removal from the live classroom and an absence for the class session.
Exam Administration & Proctoring
How are exams administered?
ALL lecture and lab exams as well as the comprehensive final will be taken online using the proctoring service Honorlock. Exams will be taken outside of traditional class periods with ALL students working remotely.
You will be responsible for making sure that you take the practice Honorlock quiz BEFORE your first exam to avoid any issues or problems during your first graded exam. This practice quiz will be available to you in eCampus.
Exams will be randomly generated from question pools. All students will receive the same number of questions to assess their mastery of learning objectives.
Please note that you will not be allowed to go back to previous exam questions.
If you are serviced through ODS, you will need to submit your paperwork to me so I can add authorizations to your profile.
When are exams available?
You will have a 48-hour (maximum) window to complete scheduled exams. You are allowed 75 minutes to complete each lecture and lab exam.
The final will be administered during a 48-hour window that includes the course exam time according to the Blinn finals schedule. Students will be allowed 135 minutes to complete the final exam.
You will not be allowed a physical calculator, paper and pencil, or anything other than a computer while testing. If a calculator or scratch paper are needed, they will be provided to you electronically.
What happens if I experience problems accessing or during the exam?
It is your responsibility to contact Honorlock via chat if you experience a problem accessing the exam or while taking the exam. Failure to contact Honorlock will result in the grade earned at the time of the incident.
No re-take will be allowed without proper documentation from Honorlock chat.
Allow time for internet or technology glitches as you plan for when to begin taking an exam.
Behavior during an exam:
The use of notes, textbooks, lab manuals, cell phones, smart watches, laptops, headphones, or other similar electronic devices is NOT allowed during the exam.
Talking or leaving the room/desk while taking the exam is not permitted. If a student voluntarily leaves during the exam for any other reason, the exam may be graded as is up to that point in the exam causing all remaining exam questions to be counted as zero. The student will not be allowed to return and complete the remainder of the exam for a grade.
Copying, writing down, recording, or taking a picture of exam questions in full or partially constitutes academic dishonesty. The Honorlock exam sessions will be manually reviewed. If evidence of academic dishonesty is suspected, you will be contacted and you may receive a zero on the exam.
Honorlock (online proctoring)
Honorlock is a third party online proctor that is enabled on all online exams for this course. Students must have a high-speed reliable internet connection, webcam, and a microphone (if the webcam does not have one.)
To help you have a positive testing experience:
DO take your exam well before the close of the testing window.
DO take the Honorlock practice quiz to test out the service and your equipment/internet DO take your exam OUTSIDE of peak internet usage times
DO have high-quality internet access
DO connect to internet via a wired connection rather than WiFi for greater connection stability DO plug in your equipment (i.e. computer, hotspot, router, etc.) to be sure you have good battery life.
DO make sure that your face is clearly visible in the recording window throughout the exam and that background lighting is sufficient to clearly distinguish your face from background surroundings. Proctors must see your eyes and face not your forehead or ceiling. A minute or more out of view may be considered academic dishonesty.
DO keep your eyes on the computer exam screen. Gazing down or to the side gives the appearance of reading a book or notes and may be considered academic dishonesty.
DO find a quiet place where you can be alone to take the exam. Talking, people walking through the room, etc. may be flagged as academic dishonesty.
Do test under conditions that replicate an in-class exam with me proctoring. If the conditions do not meet the in-class exam standards, it may be considered as academic dishonesty.
DO e-mail me before the testing window closes if you experience one of these "flagged" events during testing.
Academic Dishonesty
Cheating, suspected cheating, helping someone else cheat, or plagiarism will not be tolerated and at minimum will result in a zero on the assignment.
A scholastic integrity report form will be completed and given to administration.
It is under the instructors discretion whether to escalate the issue to the Academic Standards Committee.
ANY FLAGGED PROCTORING VIOLATION CONSIDERED ACADEMIC DISHONESTY WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF ZERO ON THE EXAM.
Behavior and Etiquette
kept to a low level.
Use of social media, texting, or taking phone calls during class is not allowed, as it is disrespectful and distracting to your peers and instructor. Headphones, videos, music, and listening to music are not allowed upon entering the classroom, lab, or exam.
The instructor will ask a student who continues to disturb lectures/labs or who is acting offensively to other students or the instructor to leave the room, and be marked “absent” for the day. If the student chooses to not leave the room after being asked, campus police will be called to escort the student out of the room. Please refer to the Blinn College "Civility Statement" found on the Blinn homepage.
Remember to dress appropriately when attending class in-person and remotely and when taking online lecture and lab exams.
Problem Resolution
If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues. If the problems or issues cannot be resolved at the instructor level, you should request a conference with the Biology Department Head.
