INTRODUCTION

In order to support and improve teaching and learning, Tripod administers surveys to

gather, organize, and report on student perspectives at the classroom level. Your

survey report is a snapshot of student perspectives at one point in time. Tripod®

survey results help create a more complete picture of your classroom, and can help

inform reflection, goal setting, and other aspects of your professional learning.

Tripod reports contain actionable feedback from students, organized around Tripod’s

7Cs™ framework of effective teaching.

TRIPOD’S 7CS COMPONENTS OF EFFECTIVE TEACHING

1.

Care:

Demonstrate warmth and provide emotional support.

2.

Confer:

Encourage and value students’ ideas and input.

3.

Captivate:

Spark and maintain student interest in learning.

4.

Clarify:

Explain clearly, check for understanding, and resolve confusion.

5.

Consolidate:

Help students integrate and synthesize key ideas.

6.

Challenge:

Press for effort and rigorous thinking.

7.

Classroom Management:

(formerly Control): Foster orderly, respectful, and

on-task classroom behavior.

Recent research indicates that Tripod’s 7Cs survey measures help predict student

achievement, engagement, and motivation, as well as success skills and mindsets.

As you review your Tripod student survey results, picture the learning environment

of your classroom — from your students’ perspectives. Look for areas of strength and

opportunities to improve. As with other sources of feedback, try to resist the

temptation to deflect and instead use this as an opportunity to reflect. Each time

surveys are administered with a classroom of students, you have the opportunity to

learn from their perspectives, and you can use their insights when you set goals for

your own professional learning.

UNPACKING TRIPOD STUDENT SURVEY RESULTS:

A Protocol for Reviewing Tripod Results and Setting Professional Goals

This protocol is designed to help you analyze and reflect on your Tripod survey

results. Whether doing this on your own, with another educator, or a team of

colleagues, this structure is intended to help as you reflect and set professional goals.

Step 1: Predict

Before digging into your Tripod survey results, take some time to review the Tripod Teacher Toolkit (http://tripoded.com/teacher-toolkit/) or the document called Teacher Toolkit: Tripod’s 7Cs Framework of Effective Teaching, which include descriptions of each of the 7Cs components, along with sample survey questions, indicators of exemplary practice, and reflection questions. Next, take a moment to reflect on the learning

conditions in your classroom. Which components of the 7Cs framework do you predict will show as areas of strength and which components do you think offer the most room for improvement?

Step 2: Observe and Reflect

Step 2: Observe and Reflect

Review Tripod’s 7Cs framework in light of your survey results and consider the indicators of exemplary practice presented in the Tripod Teacher Toolkit

(http://tripoded.com/teacher-toolkit/) or the document called Teacher Toolkit: Tripod’s 7Cs Framework of Effective Teaching.

A. On which of the 7Cs components are your results the highest? Based on your survey results and your own perspective, which indicators of exemplary practice (found in the Teacher Toolkit) represent areas of strength for you? (List a few of them here, or if you have printed the Teacher Toolkit, mark these with an “S” for “Strength.”)

B. On which of the 7Cs components are your results the lowest? Based on your survey results and your own perspective, which areas of practice present opportunities for growth? (List a few of them here, or if you have printed the Teacher Toolkit, mark these with an “O” for “Opportunity.”)

(5)

Step 3: Take Action – Share Effective Strategies with Colleagues

A. Based on your survey results, which 7Cs component represents an area of strength that you would be willing to share with colleagues?

B. What teaching strategies are particularly helpful in supporting your effectiveness with this 7Cs component? Review the 7Cs indicators of exemplary classrooms and reflection questions for ideas (found in the Teacher Toolkit).

(6)

Step 4: Take Action – Pursue Opportunities for Professional Learning

A. Based on your survey results, which 7Cs component represents an area you would like to focus on as an opportunity for improvement?

B. Review the 7Cs indicators of exemplary classrooms and reflection questions (found in the Teacher Toolkit). As you seek out opportunities for professional learning, what teaching strategies will you focus on?

C. How will you develop your knowledge and skills in relation to these teaching

strategies? What kinds of opportunities are available (e.g., informal discussions, formal presentations with small or larger groups, peer observations, online resources, etc.)? How will you make this happen? What support do you need?
