TXDOT Traffic Engineering Standard Sheets – ED-14 Electrical Details
A. Components. LPS Components shall comply with the requirements of the following: National Fire Protections Association (NFPA) 70, National Electrical Code (NEC):
Latest edition at the time of construction.
NFPA 780 Standard for Installation of Lightning Protections Systems: Latest edition at the time of construction.
Lightning Protection Institute – Standard of Practice for the Design-Installation and Inspection of Lightning Protection Systems LPI-175: Latest Edition at the time of construction.
2-5 1158 12-14 Roof- Mounting Air Terminals: NFPA Class 1, aluminum, solid, unless otherwise
indicated.
Ground Rods, Ground Loop Conductors, and Concrete-Encased Electrodes shall comply with the plans, specifications, and applicable portions of the standards listed in this specification.
B. Products. Provide products that meet this specification. The following list of
manufacturers is provided for information only to assist in establishing a product level of quality. Other manufacturer’s products may also be submitted provided that the product is of equal or better value and performance as approved by the Engineer.
A-C Lightning Security, Inc. Automatic Lightning Protection Erico International Corporation Harger Lightning Protection, Inc. Independent Protection Company, Inc. Robbins Lightning, Inc.
Thompson Lightning Protection, Inc.
C. LPS Product Submittals. Submit the following product data, shop drawings and qualifications:
1. Product Data: For air terminals and mounting accessories, conductors, connections, ground electrode system, and other necessary components.
2. Shop Drawings: Detail LPS, including air-terminal locations, conductor routing and connections, and bonding and grounding provisions. Include indications for use of raceway and data on how concealment requirements will be met. Provide design analysis data to demonstrate design compliance with the plans
specifications, applicable chapters of NFPA 780 and all other requirements in this specification.
3-5 1158 12-14 D. Governing Requirements. In the case where a conflict exists, the more restrictive
requirement shall govern. The Engineer shall make a determination regarding the conflicting requirements. The determination of requirements by the Engineer shall govern.
3. Construction. Install LPS components and systems according to approved shop drawings, plans, specifications and the standards listed in this specification:
A. Install LPS strike termination devices. Shop drawings shall provide the final location, mounting or attachment, type and size required by the approved shop drawing. B. Install LPS roof cross-run and down conductors of the type and size required. Install
conductors with direct paths from air terminals to ground connections. Avoid sharp bends and narrow loops. Conductor location, mounting or attachment, type and size as required by the plans and approved shop drawings.
C. Conceal following conductors: System conductors.
Down conductors. Interior conductors
Conductors within normal view from exterior locations at grade within 20 feet of building.
D. Install LPS ground terminals shall be of the type and size shown on the plans and approved shop drawings, including but not limited to ground rods, encased ground electrodes, ground rings, ground radials, and ground plates to form an integrated earth grounding electrode system (GES). GES shall comply with NEC, NFPA 780, LPI-175 and IEEE Std 81-1983 (Guide for Measuring Earth Resistivity).
E. Install LPS ground test well of the type and size shown on the plans and approved shop drawing.
F. Install a LPS Master Ground Bus Bar (MGBB) of the type and size as shown on the plans and as approved on the shop drawings. Provide ground bonding connection from
4-5 1158 12-14 G. Install approved exothermic-welded connections for all conductor splices and
connections between conductors and other components. LPS cable connections shall be of the type, location and size shown on the plans and as approved on the shop drawings. H. Install components that intrinsically provide corrosion protection.
1. Do not combine materials that can form electrolytic couple that will accelerate corrosion in presence of moisture unless moisture is permanently excluded from junction of such materials.
2. Use conductors with protective coatings where conditions would cause deterioration or corrosion of conductors.
I. LPS Coordination.
1. Coordinate installation of LPS with installation of other building systems and components, including electrical wiring, supporting structures and building
materials, metal bodies requiring bonding to lightning protection components, and building finishes.
2. Coordinate installation of air terminals attached to roof systems with roofing/building manufacturer, fabricator and installer.
J. LPS Quality Control.
1. LPS Installer Qualifications: Engage experienced installer who is NRTL listed or who is certified by LPI as Master Installer and Designer.
2. LPS Listing and Labeling: As defined in NFPA 780, Article 2-2, “Definitions.” All components shall Labeled and Listed as required by NFPA 780.
3. LPS Quality Control Field Inspections: Provide reports indicating compliance with plans & specification requirements.
4. LPS UL Inspection: Apply for inspection by UL as required to obtain UL Master Label for system.
5. LPS UL Master Label: Provide UL Master Label.
5-5 1158 12-14 4. Measurement. This Item will be measured by the each of Lightning Protection System
complete in all respects including furnishing, installation, testing, and affixing a UL Master Label.
5. Payment. The work performed and materials furnished in accordance with this Item and measured as provided under “Measurement” will be paid for at the unit price bid for “Lightning Protection System” of the type and size specified and the installation method specified as applicable.
