Opening Hymn:

OH, FOR A THOUSAND TONGUES

Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing

Our great Redeemer’s praise The glories of our God and King The triumphs of His grace!

Jesus, the name that charms our fears That bids our sorrows cease

‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears

‘Tis life and health and peace

Jesus, You’re the Name above all names Jesus, Lamb of God

Jesus, You’re the King of salvation Who was and is to come

He breaks the pow’r of canceled sin He sets the pris’ner free

His blood can make the foulest clean His blood availed for me

My gracious Master and my God Assist me to proclaim

To spread through all the earth abroad The honors of Your name

Jesus, You’re the Name above all names Jesus, Lamb of God

Jesus, You’re the King of salvation Who was and is to come

Who was and is to come Who was and is to come

Invocation

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Confession

P Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the

(3)

3 thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily

magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen.

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P Most merciful God,

C We confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,

renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Absolution

Greeting

P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

P Let us pray.

Almighty God, by the working of Your Holy Spirit, grant that we may gladly hear Your Word proclaimed among us and follow its directing; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

Please be seated.

First Reading

Jeremiah 20:7-13

7 O L

ORD, you have deceived me, and I was deceived, you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me. 8 For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. 9 If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. 10 For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! “Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.” 11 But the LORD is with me as a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble; they will not overcome me. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten. 12 O LORD of hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. 13 Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers.

Second Reading

Romans 7:1-13

1Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. 4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code. 7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not

(4)

4 covet.” 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. 13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.

Holy Gospel

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 10th chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord.

Matthew 10:34-42

34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother- in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 40 “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

Please be seated.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

P Let us join in confessing our faith using the words of the Apostles’ Creed. ALL I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.

On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit.

Closing Hymn:

THIS IS AMAZING GRACE

by Phil Wickham

Who breaks the power of sin and darkness, Whose love is mighty and so much stronger? The King of Glory, the King above all kings. Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder And leaves us breathless in awe and wonder? The King of Glory, the King above all kings. CHORUS

This is amazing grace, This is unfailing love,

That You would take my place, That You would bear my cross. You would lay down Your life That I would be set free. Oh, Jesus, I sing for

All that You've done for me. Who brings our chaos back into order, Who makes the orphan a son and daughter? The King of Glory, the King of Glory. Who rules the nations with truth and justice, Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance? The King of Glory, the King above all kings. CHORUS

BRIDGE

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!

Worthy is the King who conquered the grave! Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!

Worthy is the King who conquered the grave! Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!
