Welcome to

Chrysanthemums

Dear Chrysanthemum Grower,

Welcome to our latest mail order catalogue. This year, we are offering an excellent range, from the spectacular and exclusive Misty series to the outdoor spray and bloom varieties. Also available, for glasshouse culture, is the American Beauty series and a wide selection of All-Year-Round (Late) spray cultivars. New for 2010 is an extensive range of exhibition varieties. Also new this year is our Postal Flowers Service (see page 24 for full details). Plants and flowers can be ordered from this catalogue (plant order form on page 29), by telephone or via our secure website. Chrysanthemums Direct will be attending even more flower shows around the country this year. Our young plants and cut flower will be available to purchase at these events. All the flowers and plants that we sell are propagated from virus-free stock plants and grown, to the highest standard, on our nurseries in Cheshire. R. F. Lawrence and Sons, our parent company, has over 50 years horticultural experience. The family partnership includes Reg and Joyce Lawrence and their sons Trevor and Nigel. They are the only large-scale producer of Chrysanthemum blooms in the UK. Trevor Lawrence, along with Don Wright and Martyn Flint, set up Chrysanthemums Direct early last year to sell young plants direct to you.

We are very proud of our achievements in 2009, gaining either a Gold or Large Gold Medal at every show that we attended. We were also awarded nine Best in Show trophies and look

forward to continuing our success in 2010. Aerial view of part of the nurseries, in Cheshire

American Beauty Series

American Beauty Lemon

American Beauty will flower naturally in December, but will need glasshouse cultivation. It can either be planted and grown in a glasshouse, or grown in pots and moved into a glasshouse in the autumn, before any frosts. The young plants should be potted on twice, with the final pot size being 23 - 25cms (8" - 9"). Use a good quality potting compost, such as John Innes No. 3, and feed weekly with a liquid fertilizer, following the manufacturer’s recommendations. Water moderately, keeping the compost just moist, at all times. Pinch out 14 days after planting and allow 2 or 3 breaks to develop. Remove side buds as they develop and stake as necessary. Keep the glasshouse well ventilated, but do not allow the night temperature to drop below 10°C. (50°F.)

New Introduction for 2010

Chrysanthemum Green Mist

Our selection of an old variety, which has not been

widely available to buy as young plants, in the past.

We first exhibited this variety at the Harrogate

Autumn Flower Show 2009, where it caused a great

deal of interest. It is a variety often seen in florists'

shops but rarely available to grow - until now!

We have selected a particularly good form and named it Green Mist. As

with all the young plants we sell, it is propagated on our nurseries in

Cheshire from clean, virus-free stock plants.

It should be grown in the same way as an All-Year-Round (Late) spray

variety. See page 10 for growing instructions.

Early Incurved and Intermediate Varieties

The next pages contain a selection of exhibition varieties, but don't be put off by the name. These can all be grown just for you to enjoy in your own garden. Follow sections 2 or 3 in the Growing Instructions on page 27. Alternatively, grow them in pots, following the instructions for American Beauty on page 6. The codes after the variety name refer to the Chrysanthemum classification system, a brief explanation can be found on page 23.

If you do grow some good blooms, why not have a go at showing them at your local Horticultural Society? Many of these small shows are crying out for new people to support them and you will find that existing members are very friendly and welcoming towards new exhibitors. One of our customers exhibited some blooms of the Misty series, from plants that he bought from us at Southport Flower Show, and won two First prizes, a Second prize and the Trophy for Best Exhibit in the Novice Section.

If you are interested there is also the National Chrysanthemum Society. They have a very informative website and membership is available at a reasonable price. Membership details are on page 28.

Classification of Varieties

All Chrysanthemums are divided into groups, dependent on their colour, type, bloom size and flowering time. This is known as classification and, if you are exhibiting your blooms, it is important to ensure that you show them in the correct class.

There are six main colour categories: Bronze, Pink, Purple, Red, Yellow and Salmon, which can also be either Light or Deep. The other groups are White, Cream and Other Colours, bringing the total number of possible colours to 21. Type refers to the arrangement of petals on the flower and the shape of the bloom, and is often referred to as the 'section', for example, Reflexed or Incurved. Size is either small, medium or large and, for the purpose of classification, flowering time is divided into either September (Early), October (Mid) or November (Late). Each of these criteria is represented by either a number or letter, therefore, each variety can be described by a short code, which indicates its characteristics.

For example: Joyce Frieda is coded 13bY. The number (13) refers to the flowering time and type or section - '1' being mid-season flowering and '3' signifying an incurved bloom. The lower case letter (b) is the size of bloom, in this case medium, and the upper case letter (Y) shows the colour, which is yellow.

Telephone orders & enquiries: 0800 046 7443

For other areas of the UK, there are additional charges per box, as follows: Orders for the Isle of Wight or the Isles of Scilly - Please add £6.00. Orders for postcodes AB, BT, IV, KW, PA and PH - Please add £30.00. Orders for other UK islands - Please add £40.00.

We regret that we are unable to send flowers beyond the UK.

When you receive your Chrysanthemums they will appear very floppy, as we do not put your blooms into water after cutting, but place them into our cold store overnight. The combination of this and the fact that they are allowed to wilt means that they will travel to you in perfect condition.

Care of your flowers Delivery

Blooms will be delivered by next day courier and our price includes P&P to most of mainland UK, for delivery from Tuesday to Friday. We are unable to schedule deliveries for a Monday, but can arrange Saturday deliveries, at an additional charge of £25.00 per box.

On receipt of your flowers please unpack carefully. Cut 5cm (2 inches) off the bottom of each stem. Then crush the base of the stem, put the bloom into deep, cold water and keep in a cool place overnight. By the morning, the flowers will be turgid and you may arrange them in vases. Thereafter, keep the water clean, changing it every 2-3 days to keep your flowers in the best condition. Given this care, your blooms should last for up to 3 weeks.

(26)

On Receipt of Your Plants

Please remove plants from the packaging, and plant out as soon as possible. Do not plant outside if there is still any danger of frost. If you are not ready to plant immediately, pot the plants into 9cm (3.5") pots using a good quality compost, keep just moist but do not over-water.

Disbudding

To produce large flowers, it is essential that each flower stem should be disbudded. This consists of removing all buds and side-shoots, just leaving the terminal (top) bud. Remove side-shoots when they are about 2cms (¾") long. To produce a spray, do the opposite, remove the terminal bud and leave all the side buds.

All the varieties marked with this symbol, in the All-Year-Round (late) spray section, can be grown either as spray or can be disbudded, as described above, to produce a larger single bloom.

Pinching Out

A Chrysanthemum plant, when left to grow naturally, will continue to grow taller until a terminal bud is formed at the tip of the main stem. Side-shoots will then form in the leaf axils. Pinching out, or stopping, is purely a way of hastening the formation of these side-shoots. Simply remove the tip of the plant, leaving 4 - 5 leaves. If, at the time of pinching out, there is any sign of a terminal bud, it is essential to remove a large piece of the plant, sometimes over half.

*

General Care

Growing On

Plant out 30 - 45cms (12" - 18") apart and stake immediately with bamboo canes. Tie carefully to avoid damaging the stem. Water thoroughly. Do not water again until the plants have almost dried out. Plants grown outside require fertile, well-drained soil and full sun. If growing in pots, use a good quality compost, such as John Innes No. 3. Keep the ground clear of weeds and continue to tie in, as the plants grow. Water regularly, especially in hot, dry weather, but be careful not to over-water. Feed weekly with a liquid fertilizer. Do not exceed the manufacturer’s recommended dose.

Growing Instructions

The Misty, Allouise and Beppie series, plus the early spray varieties, can achieve a flowering period of six months, depending on the use of one of three different cultural methods:

1. Early Flowering Under Glass

Early crops can be planted in January or February and, using heat, these will flower from May to July. Plants should be pinched out 10 - 14 days after planting. Remove the central growing point and leave approximately 4 - 5 leaves. At this time growth will be very fast, with just naturally occurring daytime temperatures. Be careful not to let temperatures get too high during the day, as this will lead to growth that is too tall. 2. Early Flowering Outdoors

Plant outside from late April until June, once all danger of frost has gone. Plants should be about 30 - 45cms (12" - 18") apart. Normally, pinching out is carried out 2 - 3 weeks after planting and you should aim to allow 3 - 4 stems to develop per plant. If, at the time of pinching out, there is any sign of a terminal bud, it is essential to remove a large piece of the plant, sometimes over half. A hard stop will help avoid prematurely budded side-shoots. Successive plantings will extend the flowering period, but do not plant too late if your area is prone to early autumn frosts.

3. Flowering Under Cover

Many growers prefer to protect later crops from weather damage and frost, so as to produce the best quality blooms. The two main ways of growing are:

There are advantages with both methods. With outside growing, a better, balanced plant can be produced and there is less chance of plants growing too tall. However, problems can arise in getting protection on the plants at the correct time. If planting in a cold glasshouse, the protection is always there, but fine summer weather can lead to tall growth and sometimes to earlier budding than is required. Planting outside and covering does have the advantage of allowing earlier planting, which will produce more breaks per plant and so a heavier crop of better quality flowers.

1. Under glass they will flower from May to July.

2. Outdoors, without protection, they will flower from August to October. 3. With protection, they will flower in late September and October.

a) Planting outside and covering, either with mobile houses or temporary covers. b) Planting under cold structures or into glasshouses.

(28)

Although, generally, Chrysanthemums are not prone to many pests or diseases, listed below are some of the more common problems. As so many familiar garden chemicals are being withdrawn at the moment, we have not listed any brands. Please visit your local Garden Centre and ask their advice. Always follow the manufacturer's directions when using chemicals. Organic options may also be available. Good general growing conditions and hygiene will help prevent many problems. All of our young plants are propagated from clean, virus-free mother plants.

Aphids (greenfly, blackfly) - cause distortion of the foliage and are a prime suspect in the spread of viruses.

Capsid Bugs - are sap suckers and will cause distorted growth of terminal shoots.

Earwigs - will eat flowers and foliage, causing ragged patterns.

Thrips - cause puckering of the foliage as well as stunted growth, and can also badly mark the flowers.

Whitefly and Red Spider Mites - can be a problem under glass, both cause stunted growth.

Powdery Mildew - is caused by too high a temperature (mainly under glass) and dryness at the roots.

White Rust - is the biggest disease to affect Chrysanthemums, and its effects can be severe. Watch out for pale yellow spotting on leaf surfaces, followed by pinky-white pustules on the undersides. Remove all affected leaves and burn. Try to keep humidity down and ensure good ventilation, especially under glass.
