seminar #4 / program 18-19 january 2012
it’s our future, love!
on people and mindsetsmind on fire!
2112 – starting now ...dear visionary,
we need positive visions of sustainable futures. let us qoute donella H. meadows (1941-2001), one of the leading pioneers of sustainable visions and co-author of Limits to growth in 1972: “if we don’t know where we want to go, it makes little difference that we made great progress. yet vision is not only missing almost en-tirely from policy discussions; it is missing from our whole culture. we talk about our fears, frustrations, and doubts endlessly, but we talk only rarely and with embarrassment about our dreams.” donella wrote this in 1994 for the third Bien-nial meeting of the international society for ecological economics, held in Costa rica. she talked about the need to strengthen ourselves to endure the pain of the enormous gap between the world we know and the world we profoundly long for, and she made people try it themselves.
House of Futures believes that we are able to promise each other more than survival during the next 100 years – starting now. the world is changing, and people are changing too. our values, belief systems, consciousness or simply the whole range of our capacities as humans are not the same today as they were back in 1912, and they will not be in 2112 either. no matter whether you see it as an evolvement of the rational human mind, a new enlightenment or a growing spiritual movement, it is happening. we are moving into a new era, and we need to go for shared and responsible visions to begin with.
at this fourth and closing in100y-seminar on people and mindsets we will deal with questions such as: what is sustainability utopias? what will happen when global values shift towards a more integral understanding of the whole? what will our relationship with nature be? How do we change our everyday consumption patterns? what are the historic models for great transformations? and how do we frame our visions for a sustainable future?
all of us, we believe, are fuelled by the desire to change towards the bet-ter, but also pulled back by the agenda of today; survive and keep business as usual going. our common future is literally on fire. Come together and ‘be beautiful in spirit’!
Yours sincerely, House of Futures Future mind tours, Büro reisende
Future mind tours travels within the human body and mind in order to dive into the conscious and subconscious. through generations our special technique has been explored and evolved and we are now the proud owners of a subtrønic model 645©. this allows us to investigate your inner human landscape on the most comfortable journey and almost without any com-plications. However, sometimes our presence might manifest as disturbances*. the most sublime outcome of this journey is a mind shift in the specific reisende potentially resulting in a shift in paradigms in the external social landscape.

in 100 Years
read more aBout “in 100 years – starting now” at www.in100y.dk What
the project “in 100 years – starting now” is developed and will be facilitated by House of Futures during 2011-12. the project will explore and debate ques-tions such as:
- How can we sustain, develop and en-rich human existence given the limited resources available on planet earth? - what does it take to co-create
sus-tainable societal growth/development in the long run?
- and what are the preferred sustainable futures?
Why
“in 100 years – starting now” has two overall purposes. the first is to develop and present alternative visions for sustainable societies to the general public and to decision makers in the public and private sector. the second purpose is an assessment of whether and how the VeluX Foundation should support the establishment of a center for environment and sustainability in denmark. a core group of high profile danish experts will follow the four semi-nars and based on a parallel backcast-ing process give their recommendations to the foundation in april 2012.
How
Four in100y-seminars will play a central role in re-working the agenda of sustainability and growth/development. the first seminar did focus on visions of “sustainable growth”, the second on “policy and business models”, the third on “nature and technology” and the fourth will focus on “people and mind-sets”. the seminars are independent events yet also form part of a scenario process running the course of almost a year. we use Futures studies methods in a 100 year scope combined with performance art to frame the neces-sary and preferred transformations and futures.
the process involves 150+ inter-disciplinary experts and thinkers from different fields, who rework and co-create visions of sustainable futures. af-ter the four seminars House of Futures will present two preferred futures for sustainable societies 2112 in a maga-zine publication, that all participants will receive for free.
our vision is that this project will make a unique scandinavian contribu-tion to the global debate on how we can “meet the needs of the present without compromising future genera-tions”.

aBout tHe sCenario proCess:
Preferred futures,
alternative mindsets
during the course of the seminars of the in100y project, many issues and chal-lenges have been raised and addressed. among them, a recurring theme that has been both explicitly articulated and underlying much of the discussions has been the need for three things: positive vision, holistic thinking and mindshift.
the need for positive vision is not just generally desirable, but specifically necessary in the debate on sustainability and growth which is often dominated by threats to be avoided rather than oppor-tunities to be pursued. Holistic thinking is the deep and broad understanding that our actions have consequences that we need to take into account and take responsibility for. and the call for a mind-shift is rooted in the idea that genuine transformation of humanity’s relationship with nature not just requires solid scien-tific knowledge, but also our consistent acting on this knowledge.
scenarios
working with scenarios in the form of preferred futures is a tool which is
per-fectly suited to address these themes. preferred futures are alternative, po-tentially desirable, and comprehensive stories about future states of the world. they are fundamentally based on posi-tive visions and holistic thinking. and working with more than one possible preferred future enables us to examine a wider space of positive opportunities.
at the two recent seminars we have presented what we call scenario sketches for preferred futures (see page 8). these sketches are not in them-selves whole scenarios but – inspired by the calls for mind shift – focus on one factor, namely mindset.
Baseline scenario: i=Pat
we implicitly operate with a baseline scenario, a continuation of present trends, which is not sustainable and therefore requires a transformation. this on the basis of the ipat model, where the impact (i) that human activity has on our global resource base is a function of population (p), affluence (a) and technology (t) – all
broadly defined. while population is on a long-term stabilising trend and technology steadily contributes to a certain decoupling of resource impact from affluence, the trend speed is much too slow to significantly reduce the long-run widening gap between impact and global resourcefulness. so, transformation is needed.
the sketches that we have presented take mindset as the basic variable and driver of change. in ipat terms, it could be said that this pertains to the “a” and “t” variables – what is af-fluence in the broadest sense, and how can we develop systems (technology in a broader sense) that allows us to achieve desired affluence in a sustain-able way.
enlightenment, Copernicus and darwin
it is necessary to rethink our relationship with planet earth, and in this process to develop new mindsets. it is possible, and we have done it before. But we are talking large-scale paradigm shifts comparable to the age of the enlighten-ment or to pioneering breakthroughs like those of Copernicus or darwin - break-throughs that changed our understand-ing of ourselves and nature.
our sketches point to two pos-sible transformative future mindsets that could drive sustainability forward. we
call them the “power of nature” and “man-made world”.
sCenarios as enaBling tools scenarios are not plans but tools to promote constructive ideas about the future. they can serve as framework for our common debates about the long-term future. and they can be applied by individual institutions and social agents as reference points for their own visions and plans.

aBout Futures studies in ‘in100years’:
maKing future times
“in 100 years – starting now” has given House of Futures the opportunity to unfold our approaches together with 150+ highly qualified and inter-discipli-nary group of participants, and we have given our best to fulfill the opportuni-ties to co-create preferred futures for sustainable societies in the long run in an experimental setting. this fourth seminar will be no exception. about futures studiesinterdisciplinary creation of futures is the heart beat of our work, and House of Futures is organizational member of the association of professional Futurists (apF) and the world Future society.
the Futures studies field emerged during the mid-twentieth Cen-tury in the wake of the 2nd world war and the desire among decision makers to overview global developments as well as anticipate challenges ahead. yet still, out from a conviction that there would be a single, probable future ahead. moon landing, oil crises, youth culture and new values of the sixties challenged that assumption. the future was starting to be seen in plural – composed by the possible, preferable and the probable future. and we would have a go in
form-ing our own. the new insights led to a new dynamic in the field of futures stud-ies and the founding of a range of large centers and institutes for futures studies around the world. scenarios or alterna-tive futures became in favor as the core method, but often without connecting back to the present and the personal domain, tending to leave the subject floating out there – 10, 20 and even 50 years from now.
supported by private finan-cing and funding the field matured. so did a world view of economic liberalism and with it, the ideological answer to almost any questions about the future; “let the market decide”. By the end of the twenty-first Century the market has shown its capabilities in delivering the goods, but also its failings in holistic and long term thinking.
House of Futures represents a new way of doing Futures studies. it could be described as a “future talk and walk” in order to create a sense of living the future now. we experiment in combining Futures studies methods and performance art. we unfold and in-tegrate the “out there” with the “in here” (quoting the australian futurist richard slaughter) using the classical and sketCH oF sCenarios towards 2112
#2: tHe power oF nature We are part of the world – we are oNe. the global family share a common biology and collective conscoiusness, and we know we are rooted in nature. on a deeper level, these are sources of meaning that we all tap into, regardless of na-tionality or culture. some stress our common DNa, the laws of nature, evolution and our dependence on the earth’s ecosystems. some draw on religious imagery of an almighty creator. and some rely on ancient wisdom and myths, emphasizing commonality and civility among humans. mankind is maturing and tends to become an integrated or-ganic part of the world’s ecosystem.

#1: man-made world
geologists, biologists and climate scientists are telling us that earth’s metabolism is changing significantly, and that human activities are the main driving force behind this. We realize that when we put our minds to it, we can develop technologies, organizations, political institutions and business models that allow us to prosper in ways that do not jeopardize the planet. collectively, we are approaching a state of global stewardship in which we manage our planet rationally, like any sen-sible landowner would his property.

interior/inner eXterior/outer ColleCtiVe/top-down indiVidual/Bottom-up psychological / Intentional behavioral social / systemic cultural integral Futures: typical system oriented methods of the
Futures’ field – e.g. visioning, scenarios, forecasting and backcasting – and more personal tangible, philosophical and holistic methods and approaches. we engage people in what we believe are meaningful conversations about the future. we invite you, dear participant, to take part in this conversation.
as a contribution to the work in progress we would like to highlight two Future studies methods. Both are se-lected for their ability to incorporate the many different approaches present for this two day seminar thereby giving us all the possibility of a better understand-ing of the transformations we face. Both methods will be used in adapted ver-sions specially tailored for this seminar. integral futures
in recent years the integral Futures approach which draws on the integral theory and the ideas of ken wilber are becoming more central to Futures stud-ies. By explicitly respecting and valuing plural perspectives integral Futures meets the need for a holistic and still structured outlook.
integral Futures thinking identi-fies four primary dimensions of reality, emerging from two key distinctions: be-tween exterior and interior perspectives (or objective and subjective perspec-tives); and between individual and
col-lective perspectives (or bottom-up and top-down). these twin distinctions give rise to a four quadrant model shown on the next page.
at the seminar we will unfold the four quadrants to develop a more com-prehensive understanding of sustainable futures.
the delphi method
Contrary to integral Futures the delphi method has been around for a long time, but it has mainly been used in quantitative foresights indicating breakthroughs in technology. the delphi method – originally developed by the rand project during the 1950s – is based on the assumption that group judgments are more valid than individual judgments. in the standard version, a group of experts answer questionnaires in two or more rounds. the participants are encouraged to revise their earlier answers in light of the replies of other experts.
at this seminar you, dear partici-pant, are the expert, and we will present some of the answers from the previous seminars as well as new ones for your consideration. on the second day of the seminar, we will go back and revise the common pool of knowledge and wisdom.
