Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lawrence
Fall 2019 SURVEY RESULTS
Responses to the survey questions are provided below.
In most cases each question has its own page, each page containing a bar graph and accompanying statistics.
However, in a number of cases, both bar graphs and statistics take up several pages. Every effort has been made to make these readable, but you
may have to zoom in on your device to make the fonts larger and text more readable.
Please disregard page numbering and any blank pages.
Any written comments have been summarized by the interim ministry transition team.
Questions may be directed to any of the team members: Tom Cravens, Audra Fullerton, Barbara Schowen, Krzystof Sibilla or Ted Wilson.

Summary of Q19 responses to “Other, please specify:”
The responses of individuals to this question, not surprisingly, varied
greatly. Several mentioned a desire to provide religious education to their children–and specifically OWL. Several mentioned they wanted a sense of community. Several noted the Program (which one emphasized was the only activity on Sunday morning when first coming) as the reason for
attending. One commented that the only purpose in coming to UUCL was to support her husband in his spiritual quest. Another respondent stated that the family had moved to UUCL from another UU congregation. Having close friends who “loved it at UUCL” was the explanation offered by another respondent. Yet another stated that they had looked for a place to get married, liked UUCL “so stuck around.” One member noted that she had been attending since age 5 when her parents joined so none of the
categories listed apply. Other respondents mentioned social action/service opportunities, team/committee work, yearning for spiritual growth, and the Young Adult Group as reasons for attending.
Q20 Indicate all the reasons you CONTINUE TO ATTEND UUCL, and the importance of each.

Q26 What is the one main thing you would like to see our
congregation achieve in the next 3 to 5 years?
Answered: 69 Skipped: 15
Summary of responses to Q26
Notably, there were sixty-nine responses to this question. The responses fell generally into three categories.
Most numerous were expressions of desire to have a full time minister. For example, one respondent answered: “Have a fully empowered minister without conflict.” Another wrote: “Having a stable minister that I connect with and want to learn from.”
A second numerous set of responses dealt generally with the issue of community and mending perceived conflict between those whose primary engagement was with the Program and those whose focus was the Worship Service. One respondent articulated this issue clearly: “To understand and appreciate different needs regarding Sunday services, and harmoniously facilitate those differences (program vs worship service).” Another
respondent asked that we “lay to rest the disagreements between the two services.” Another expressed the matter this way: “Parity between the Program and the worship service; for some their emotional needs and spiritual needs are met by one or the other; for some both And another
urged: “Healing of emotional wounds, creation of a covenant (including what
happens when it is broken), clarity around our identity and a gathering schedule that reflects this renewed clarity and identity.” Notably, several expressed strong commitment to retention of the Program as an essential element.
A third substantial set of responses stressed the need for UUCL to grow and to assure our community of a sustainable financial base. For example,
one respondent commented: “Reach a point (size wise, financially, and not
in conflict) that affirms that UUCL is sustainable into the future. Sometimes I worry that if we don’t get it together, UUCL will eventually die out.” In
addition, a number of respondents who emphasized the need for growth and financial stability expressed strong desire to bring younger members and, in particular, new members with children to UUCL. “More members and more diverse members,” wrote one respondent. However, one
dissenter observed: “PS: Growth is not important, as long as we don't go bankrupt.”
Several respondents gave voice to the related need to give greater attention to reach out to the larger community and to assure greater visibility for
UUCL. As one noted: “Share our values with the larger community. I think
we are invisible to most of Lawrence, even though I feel much/most of Lawrence would embrace our values if they knew we were here.”
Another respondent urged that UUCL “establish stronger connections within the community to work for racial and environmental justice.” One
respondent took a different approach to the issue of growth by urging that UUCL purchase more contiguous property.
Other comments urged that perceived inefficiencies and lack of transparency on the part of lay leadership be addressed.
Two comments incorporated many of these subjects and are worth quoting
in full: “Honor our heritage, yet not be stuck in it, resolve cultural issues and
build a UU congregation ready to deal with the issues of our times and those of the future, a congregation that can worship together, learn together, act for justice, love, work and play together.” And, as well:
“Coming to terms with, understanding of, and support of different members' choices of different ways of participation in our congregational life.”

Summary of Q38 Responses to “Other, please specify:”
Four responses were simply that they don’t attend worship or are not sure what “spiritual growth and development” would look like for them in their advanced age.
One response: “One of the reasons we stopped attending was that rather than leaving services feeling uplifted and hopeful, we were leaving feeling like we had more on our "to do" list and the world looked bleaker. I facilitate spiritual services in my own spiritual community, and the goal is always to connect people to the wisdom of the earth and their own hearts, to open their hearts with story, to find a way to make the "lesson" embodied, and to have them walk away feeling lifted, changed, empowered. I never felt that walking away from a UU service (unless I had been involved in the

Summary of Q41 Responses
There were twenty-two responses to this question. Many of the
respondents were confused/baffled/frustrated by the question and/or list of functions as presented. As a result, they are mostly included as written:
-They are all important and hard to rank order (6 responses)
-I'm assuming the modeling of ethical life as the underpinning of all other activities, or why be a minister?
-Hard to know how these might be interpreted by different individuals. Seems like some are givens or prerequisites, making it difficult to merge them with wants.
-I would like the minister to support and respect and include the
Program as an important part of UUCL, and not just the worship service. -Least important to me is administration and facilitation which could be carried out by lay members.
-In the top half, I would include a voice in the community, not just for social/ethical reasons, but to promote our congregation through inter-faith efforts, spokesperson, etc.
-Minister needs to have a clear agreement about his or her obligations to the congregation and pay attention to boundaries.
-Um, that's an impossible question. Good luck to you, ministers!
-I put "person of character" as 1, because I feel like that's a great quality of a professional minister or any lay person of a congregation, but to see it listed as a function of a minister's work assumed that there might be a standardized definition of what this means and policing of how to be this way, which I felt unsure about.
-Don't really believe I should set minister's priorities. -Inspirational and challenging leader
-Recognize and accept lay leadership as central function. None (three responses).
