2009 Sea Son Pre VI eW

2009 Lady Blues Softball Team: (front row) Lindsey Himpel, Whitney Tapp, Maggie West, Roxanne Longo- ria, Megan Kimerer, Tish Williams, Marissa Martin, Ashley Shaffer, Samantha Farris. (back row) Jamie Smith, Kayla Long, Lindsey Moore, Nicole Perkuhn, Jessica Batres, Dani White, Katie Duncan, Ashley Pod- schun, Britny Cushing.

The Washburn Lady Blues softball team has high hopes entering the 2009 season built from a strong fin- ish to last season reaching the NCAA South Central Regional for the second time in three seasons finishing the season with a 29-28 record.

The Lady Blues are coming off a fourth-place tie in the MIAA standings and return three pitchers, both corner infielders and their catcher from last season’s squad.

Washburn has also added talented recruits who got their feet wet during the spring season and are ready to contribute this spring.

Infielders

Leading the Washburn returners are a pair of anchors at the corners in senior first team all-MIAA selection Dani White and junior second team all-MIAA pick Tish Williams.

Third baseman Williams led the Lady Blues with a .382 batting average and broke her own school single- season home run record hitting 16 as a sophomore. She finished with a team-high 65 hits, five triples, 47 runs scored and 48 runs batted in. She recorded 18 multi-hit games and recorded a .782 slugging percentage and a .470 on base percentage.

White hit .322 with 10 home runs and 58 hits and set Washburn’s single-season putout record with 562 at first base. She enters her senior season third on the all-

time home run chart with 31 career home runs while starting all 164 games of her Lady Blues career.

At catcher, the Lady Blues have two experienced backstops in juniors Whitney Tapp and Katie Duncan.

Tapp earned honorable mention all-MIAA honors behind the plate as a sophomore starting 45 games while batting .321 with 52 hits. She was solid behind the plate committing only two errors in 146 chances.

Her 35 runs scored were the second-best tally on the team. Duncan started 11 games at catcher during the season.

Moving into a starting second baseman’s role will be sophomore Ashley Shaffer, who made seven starts on the infield at shortstop and third base. Shaffer will have to replace the graduated Malarie Fellers who finished her career as Washburn’s all-time assist leader while starting all 217 games at second base.

Newcomer Lindsey Moore will hold down shortstop duties when not pitching. She earned all-league and all-Edmond (Okla.) honors as a senior.

When Moore steps inside the circle, she will be replaced by fellow freshman pitcher Samantha Farris.

Farris earned first team all-state honors and finished her senior season with 29 hits and 19 RBI at McLouth High School leading the team to a third place state tournament finish.

Freshman Britny Cushing could also see time at

shortstop and she earned all-league and all-city honors

in Topeka following her sophomore, junior and senior seasons.

The combo will look to fill the shoes of current student assist coach Brooke DeVader who started 219 games in her career and finished with a school-record 38 home runs.

Outfielders

Returning to the outfield is junior left fielder Jessie Batres. Batres started 48 games in left as she batted .244 with 32 hits while scoring 21 runs with 18 RBI.

Senior Maggie West started 20 games in the outfield in her first season at Washburn. She began 14 games in right field and six more in left during the course of the season. West is making the move to center field in 2009 replacing Mandy Tarbutton, who was named the 2008 Lady Blues most valuable player while starting all 57 games in center as a senior. West finished the season strong by batting .300 during the MIAA portion of the

schedule.

Newcomer Lindsey Himpel is penciled in to the starting right fielder’s spot entering the season. Himpel earned all-area, all-league and all-metro honors at Tonganoxie High School and she led her team in doubles, triples and stolen bases as a senior.

Looking for playing time will be junior Roxanne Longoria, sophomore Jamie Smith and freshman Marissa Martin in back up roles in the outfield.

Longoria is a transfer from Barton County where she started 60 of 62 games and recorded 44 hits with a .268 batting average.

Smith is playing softball again after sitting out the season last year after her senior season in 2007 at Topeka West.

Martin was an all-district, all-league and all-KC Northland pick as a senior after wrapping up her career with a .354 batting average and a career on-base per- centage of .472.
