LITURGY AND PRAYER

8TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

• First Reading : Sirach 27:4–7

• Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 92: 2–3,13–16

• Second Reading :1 Corinthians 15: 54–58

• Gospel : Luke 6:39–45 Background on the Gospel

The third and final section of Luke’s Sermon on the Plain begins: And he told them a parable.

There are actually four parables, three of which we read today. They are all about how to be a good disciple.

The blind cannot lead the blind. And a disciple cannot be a good disciple unless he or she has learned from the teacher. Everyone who is fully trained is like the teacher who knows how to cure the blind. Before you can be a good disciple and teach others you must take care of yourself. Do not try to take a speck out of your brother’s eye until you have taken the board out of your own.

Finally, only when you have purified yourself can you produce the good works that the teacher requires. Discipleship asks us to produce good deeds. But to produce them requires the integrity and purity of heart found in the teacher. When people see your good deeds they will know that this is because you have a good heart.

The final parable, which we do not read today, is about building on the solid foundation of rock and not on sand. This is the only way to face the difficulties a disciple will encounter and survive.

- Loyola Press - Sunday Connection

LITURGY AND PRAYER

In light of the recent reinstatement of the

obligation to attend Sunday Mass, we have been studying our live streaming data and online attendance patterns with the goal of reducing our live stream schedule. As you know, we have live streamed Mass nearly every single day since public Masses were first suspended on March 17, 2020. We are so proud to have been able to share the liturgy with so many individuals around the world since the beginning of the pandemic, but the sheer volume of data usage from streaming 12 Masses every week comes at a steep cost to our parish.

For this reason among many others, we've decided that later this month, beginning the weekend of Sunday, February 27th, we will begin streaming only the 9am Mass in English and 1pm Mass in Spanish. These Masses will be available to stream and rewatch at any time later in the day if you miss the live broadcast, on our website, Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Transitioning to this reduced streaming schedule will drastically reduce bandwidth costs, and allow our staff to focus on more creative content for you and your family to enjoy.

We will continue to share the news of this change during all Mass live streams this coming weekend, and throughout the rest of February.

We appreciate your understanding, and thank you for your continued support of our parish.

LIVESTREAMING

We encourage you to attend the Reconciliation Service at St. Anthony's on Wednesday, March 9th from 6-9 PM. Childcare is available, visit ap.church/events We hope to see you there!

RECONCILIATION SERVICE

(7)

This Weekend, Feburary 26th-27th there will be a Second Collection for the Missionaries of St. Francis De Sales.

Fr. Mathew Thottyil will speak at all the masses about his order, the Missionaries of St. Francis De Sales. The order will be undertaking a new project, a retirement home for their priests and they need our help!

Fr. Mathew and other priests belonging to the Missionaries of St. Francis De Sales (MSFS) have been working in our Archdiocese for 21 years.

Fr. George Vattapara and Fr. Jaison Thomas who were two of our previous parochial vicars are also apart of the order. The MSFS Southwest province has 265 priests besides seminarians in various stages of formation. They are engaged in pastoral ministry in India, Chad, Cameroon and the Philippines.

Twenty priests are in the retirement age, but they are in different communities engaged in various ministries. This situation will change in 3-5 years.

Please be generous in helping the Missionaries of St. Francis De Sales.

For more information about the order and the project contact Fr. Mathew at frmathew@

ap.church.

HISTORY OF ST. FRANCIS DE SALES

St Francis De Sales was born on August 21, 1567 at Thonon, near Annecy in France. He graduated from the university of Padua with a doctroate in both civil law and Church law. He was ordained a priest on December 18, 1593. He worked among the Calvinists, faced much opposition, including attempt on his life and converted teh whole district of Chablais to the Catholic faith.

Francis De Sales is foremost among those who were consistently and visibly human in his relationship to God and people. His spirituality was so human that those without theological insights

could understand and follow his spirituality. He radiated divine light through humanness like his master, Jesus. He was very human and gentle, optimistic and positive about life and the world, strong in character and compassionate in ministry and most of all he had a harmonious and peaceful spirit.

"Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset." - St. Francis De Sales

St. Benedict's Altar Guild at St. Anthony of Pad- ua is a service organization formed to serve the priests, the deacons, and the parish by preparing the sanctuary for liturgical events and by caring for the wares necessary for our liturgies.

Volunteers in the ministry reflect the Catholic tradition of preparing the altar and sanctuary for Mass, caring for the vestments and altar linens, providing flowers in the sanctuary, taking care of the candles throughout the church, caring for the holy water fonts, polishing the brass appoint- ments on the candles, and preparing for funerals.

We are always looking for new members. Train- ing is provided. Contact Brian Jones for more information: [email protected]
