añada College Engineering student David Alvarez (shown in the image to the right in the top row, second from the right) was selected to travel to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas this past April to participate in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars project (NCAS). David was selected as one of 240 community college students from across the U.S. to be part of NCAS.

The five-week scholars program culminated with a three-day on-site event at Johnson Space Center and offered students the opportunity to interact with NASA engineers and others as they learned about careers in Science and Engineering. While at NASA, students formed teams and established fictional companies interested in Mars exploration. Each team was responsible for developing and testing a prototype rover, forming a company infrastructure, managing a budget, and developing communications and outreach.

At Cañada, David worked as a tutor in the STEM Center, is a member of the Society of Hispanic and Professional Engineers (SHPE), and plans to transfer to San Jose State as an

Economics is the study of production, consumption, and allocation decisions under conditions of scarcity. Economics has two sub-disciplines: Macroeconomics and Micro-economics. Macroeconomics looks at the performance of the economy as a whole. Students study topics such as economic growth, inflation, changes in employment and unemployment, trade performance with other countries, and the relative success or failure of government economic policies and the policies made by the Federal Reserve. Microeconomics looks at economics at the level of individual consumers, groups of con-sumers, or firms. The general concern of microeconomics is the efficient allocation of scarce resources between alternative uses. Microeconomics looks at the determina-tion of price through the optimizing behavior of consumers and firms; with consumers seeking to maximize happiness and firms, profit.
