What
RSM
for
Storage
does
TheIBMRemoteSupport ManagerforStorage(RSM forStorage)applicationisan applicationthatinstallsonanIBMSystemx serverrunningNovellSUSELinux® Enterprise Server9,SUSELinuxEnterpriseServer10,orRedHat EnterpriseLinux 4AdvancedServer, andprovidesproblemreportingandremoteaccessfor IBM Servicefor theDS3000andDS4000familiesof IBMstoragesubsystems.
Theproblemreportingprovided bytheRSMfor Storageapplicationautomatically createsanentryinIBM'scallmanagement systemfor eachsubsystemthatreports a problem.Thisistheequivalent ofplacing avoicecallto IBMServicefor a problem. Onceinthesystem,problemsarerespondedto withthesamepriorityas specifiedbythemaintenanceagreementinplacefortheproduct.
RSM forStorage controlssecurityfor remoteaccessbymanaginghardware and softwarecomponentsof theserverit isinstalledon.Onceinstalled,theserver shouldbeconsideredto bea singlepurposeapplianceforproblemreportingand remoteaccesssupportfor yourstoragesubsystems.Onlyapplicationsapprovedby IBMandspecifiedinthisdocumentshouldbeinstalled.(Management oftheinternal firewallandotherconfigurationchangesmade bythesoftwaremightpreventother applicationsfromworking.)
Remote accessisprovided byanexternalmodemattachedto theserver.This connection providesIBMServicewitha commandline interfacetotheserver.All bulk datatransfersfor logsandotherproblemdeterminationfilesaresentto IBM via e-mailor byFTPusingtheserver’sEthernetinterface.Isolationofremoteand localusersofthesystemfromotherdevicesonyourintranetisperformedbyan internalfirewallthatismanagedbytheRSMforStorage application.Remote users donothavetheabilityto changeanysecurityfeatures oftheapplication.
Monitoringof storagesubsystemsisperformed byyourexistingIBMStorage Managerapplicationwhichisconfiguredtosend SNMPtrapstotheRemote Support Managerwhencriticaleventsaredetected.Configurationof the management applicationisaddressedlaterinthisdocument.

TheRSMfor StorageapplicationworkswiththeEvent Monitorof IBMStorage Manager. Whileyoucanuse otherapplicationsforroutinemanagementof your storagesubsystems, StorageManager'sEvent Monitormust berunning.TheRSM for StorageapplicationsupportstheDS3000andDS4000familiesofmid-range storagesubsystems.

SAN
devices
While RSMfor Storagedoesnotsupportproblemreportingfor otherSANdevices (suchasswitches),youcan specifyotherdevicesintheRSM forStorage
configurationinordertopermitIBMServiceto accessthemanagementports of thesedevicesforproblemdetermination.Remoteaccesstothesedevicesmustbe enabled bytheadministrator oftheRemoteSupport Managerwhenaccessis required.
How
many
do
I
need?
One RSMforStorage systemcansupportupto50subsystems.TheRSMfor Storage systemmust haveIPconnectivityto theEthernetmanagementportsof the subsystems.
If yourstorageisspreadgeographically acrossmanytime zones,andyoudonot have 24hourscoveragebyadministrative users.it maybedesirableto havemore than oneRSMforStorage system.
RSM forStorage systemmustnotrequireauthorizationthroughafirewallinorderto accessstoragesubsystemsoryourcompany'se-mailserver.
Prerequisite
hardware
TheRSMfor Storageapplicationhasthefollowinghardwareprerequisites.
Server
TheRSMfor Storagesoftwareisdesignedto runonaSystemx (xSeries)server, andmost Systemxserverscanbeused.PleaserefertotheRSM forStorage CompatibilityGuidefortheminimumserverrequirements, andalistof thespecific servers thathave beentestedwiththeRSM softwareand.Ifyou choosetousea serverthathasnotbeenspecificallytestedwiththeRSMsoftware,thesetupand configurationof theserver’sBIOS,andinstallationoftheLinuxOSmaybedifferent thatwhatisincludedinthedocumentationfor theRSM softwareandyouwillneed to contactIBMSystemxsupportforquestionsrelatedto theseotherservers.
Note: TheinternalfirewallthatrunsontheRSMforStorage serverwillpreventthe
useof thisserverasageneralpurposemanagement station.
