RSM

for

Storage

does

TheIBMRemoteSupport ManagerforStorage(RSM forStorage)applicationisan applicationthatinstallsonanIBMSystemx serverrunningNovellSUSELinux® Enterprise Server9,SUSELinuxEnterpriseServer10,orRedHat EnterpriseLinux 4AdvancedServer, andprovidesproblemreportingandremoteaccessfor IBM Servicefor theDS3000andDS4000familiesof IBMstoragesubsystems.

Theproblemreportingprovided bytheRSMfor Storageapplicationautomatically createsanentryinIBM'scallmanagement systemfor eachsubsystemthatreports a problem.Thisistheequivalent ofplacing avoicecallto IBMServicefor a problem. Onceinthesystem,problemsarerespondedto withthesamepriorityas specifiedbythemaintenanceagreementinplacefortheproduct.

RSM forStorage controlssecurityfor remoteaccessbymanaginghardware and softwarecomponentsof theserverit isinstalledon.Onceinstalled,theserver shouldbeconsideredto bea singlepurposeapplianceforproblemreportingand remoteaccesssupportfor yourstoragesubsystems.Onlyapplicationsapprovedby IBMandspecifiedinthisdocumentshouldbeinstalled.(Management oftheinternal firewallandotherconfigurationchangesmade bythesoftwaremightpreventother applicationsfromworking.)

Remote accessisprovided byanexternalmodemattachedto theserver.This connection providesIBMServicewitha commandline interfacetotheserver.All bulk datatransfersfor logsandotherproblemdeterminationfilesaresentto IBM via e-mailor byFTPusingtheserver’sEthernetinterface.Isolationofremoteand localusersofthesystemfromotherdevicesonyourintranetisperformedbyan internalfirewallthatismanagedbytheRSMforStorage application.Remote users donothavetheabilityto changeanysecurityfeatures oftheapplication.

Monitoringof storagesubsystemsisperformed byyourexistingIBMStorage Managerapplicationwhichisconfiguredtosend SNMPtrapstotheRemote Support Managerwhencriticaleventsaredetected.Configurationof the management applicationisaddressedlaterinthisdocument.

TheRemote SupportManager’suserinterfaceallowsyoutocontrolandviewstatus of fourmanagementareas:

TheRSMfor StorageapplicationworkswiththeEvent Monitorof IBMStorage Manager. Whileyoucanuse otherapplicationsforroutinemanagementof your storagesubsystems, StorageManager'sEvent Monitormust berunning.TheRSM for StorageapplicationsupportstheDS3000andDS4000familiesofmid-range storagesubsystems.

Other

SAN

devices

While RSMfor Storagedoesnotsupportproblemreportingfor otherSANdevices (suchasswitches),youcan specifyotherdevicesintheRSM forStorage

configurationinordertopermitIBMServiceto accessthemanagementports of thesedevicesforproblemdetermination.Remoteaccesstothesedevicesmustbe enabled bytheadministrator oftheRemoteSupport Managerwhenaccessis required.

need?

One RSMforStorage systemcansupportupto50subsystems.TheRSMfor Storage systemmust haveIPconnectivityto theEthernetmanagementportsof the subsystems.

If yourstorageisspreadgeographically acrossmanytime zones,andyoudonot have 24hourscoveragebyadministrative users.it maybedesirableto havemore than oneRSMforStorage system.

RSM forStorage systemmustnotrequireauthorizationthroughafirewallinorderto accessstoragesubsystemsoryourcompany'se-mailserver.

Prerequisite

hardware

TheRSMfor Storageapplicationhasthefollowinghardwareprerequisites.

Server

TheRSMfor Storagesoftwareisdesignedto runonaSystemx (xSeries)server, andmost Systemxserverscanbeused.PleaserefertotheRSM forStorage CompatibilityGuidefortheminimumserverrequirements, andalistof thespecific servers thathave beentestedwiththeRSM softwareand.Ifyou choosetousea serverthathasnotbeenspecificallytestedwiththeRSMsoftware,thesetupand configurationof theserver’sBIOS,andinstallationoftheLinuxOSmaybedifferent thatwhatisincludedinthedocumentationfor theRSM softwareandyouwillneed to contactIBMSystemxsupportforquestionsrelatedto theseotherservers.

It alsorequiresanEthernetconnection toyourSMTPserverandtheInternet.If your SANmanagement LANisseparatefromyourintranet(thatprovidesaccessto your SMTPserverandtheInternet),youwillneedasecond Ethernetportor adapterintheRSMforStorage server.

2. Installation

overview

This chapterprovidesdetailed instructionsfor installingthehardwareandsoftware necessary forusingRSMforStorage,instructionsforverifyingconnectivityand details forconfiguringRSM forStorage.

Hardware

installation

Usethefollowingsectionstoinstall theappropriatehardwarenecessary forRSM for Storageto workinyourenvironment.

Server

1. Installtheserverusingthesetupinstructionsthatcamewiththeserver.

2. ConnectoneEthernetcablefromtheservertoanEthernetswitchorhub

providingconnectionto yourSANManagementLAN.

3. If theInternetandyourcompany’se-mail(SMTP)serverarenotaccessible

fromyourSANManagementLAN, connectasecond Ethernetcablefromthe servertotheEthernetswitchor hubprovidingconnection totheInternetand e-mailserver.

Modem

Installthemodemusingthesetupinstructionsthatcamewiththemodem,andthen dothefollowing:

1. Connecttheserialcablefromthemodemtothefirstserialportontheserver.

Figure2shows youhowto makethis connection.

Note: Ifyourserverhastwoserverports,port#1istypically theonenext tothe

keyboardconnector.

2. Connectananalogphonelineto theproperconnectoronthemodem.Notethat

manymodemshave twoconnectorslabeledLINE andPHONE.Makesurethe analogphonecordispluggedintotheconnectorlabeled“LINE”.

This sectionprovidesinstructionsfor installingtheLinux(R)operating system,RSM for Storage,andupdates toRSMfor Storage.Beforeyou begininstallingthe operating system,youwillneed togathernetwork setupinformationfor theRSMfor Storage server.

Updating

the

server

firmware

shoulddownload theDOS versionsof theupdates.Also, ontheindividual firmware pages,lookfor thelink:Newfirmwareupdatefileformats.This page explainshow tocreatethemediafor eachof theavailablefile formatsfor the update.

4. Afterupdatingtheserverfirmware,load theBIOSdefaults:

1. Power onthecomputer andasthesystemperformsthePOSTandinitialization,

insertCD#1for RHEL4,U4 intheCDROM.Thesystem shouldbootfromthe CDROM.

2. Press theEnter keytoinstall ingraphicalmode.

3. It isrecommendedthatyouperformtheMediaCheck,especiallyif you

downloadedandburnedyourLinuxinstallationCDs. 4. Click Nextonthewelcomescreen

5. SelectyourLanguageandclickNext.

6. SelectyourKeyboardandclickNext.

7. If presentedwiththeUpgradeExamineScreen,selectInstallRedHat

EnterpriseASandclickNext.

8. SelectAutomaticallyPartitionandclickNext.

9. Goto “Part3-RHEL4installation.”

1. OntheAutomaticpartitioningscreen,if anyexistingpartitionsareshown,

selectRemoveallpartitionsonthissystem,andclickNext.ClickYesif you areaskedto confirmremovalofexistingpartitions.

2. OntheDisk Setupscreen,clickNext.

3. OntheBootLoaderConfigurationscreen,clickNext.

4. OntheNetworkConfigurationscreen,dothefollowing:

a. ClickEditto configurethefirstEthernetport.

1) Uncheck ConfigureusingDHCP.

2) Check ActivateonBoot

3) EntertheIPaddressandNetmaskfortheRSMfor Storagesystem.

4) Click OK.

b. IfyourequiretwoEthernetconnectionsinordertoconnect tobothyour

storagesubsystemsandyourcompany’semailandInternetgateways, highlightthesecondEthernetportandclickEdittoconfigure,otherwisego tostep5.

1) Uncheck ConfigureusingDHCP.

2) Check ActivateonBoot.

3) EntertheIPaddressandNetmaskfortheRSM forStoragesystem.

4) Click OK.

c. Enterthehostnameanddomainfor thissystem(suchas

ibmrsm01.your.company.com)

d. EntertheIPaddressesof yourGatewayandDomainNameServers

(DNS). e. ClickNext.

5. OntheFirewallConfigurationscreen,dothefollowing:

a. ClickNoFirewall.(ThefirewallwillbemanagedbytheRSMforStorage

application.)

b. FortheEnableSELinuxoption,selectDisabled.

c. ClickNext andthenProceed.

6. SelectanyadditionallanguagesupportandclickNext.

7. OntheTimeZoneSelectionscreen,selectyourTimeZoneandclickNext.

a. SelectyourTimeZone.

b. CheckSystemclock usesUTC.

c. ClickNext.

8. EntertheRootPasswordandclick Next.

9. OnthePackage InstallationDefaultsscreen,checkCustomizesoftware

packagestobeinstalled,andclickNext.

10. OnthePackage GroupSelectionscreencheckorun-checkthefollowing

applicationsasindicated.(Someselectionsmightalreadybechecked). a. CheckXWindowSystem. (Shouldalreadybechecked)

b. UncheckGnomeDesktopEnvironment.

c. CheckKDEDesktopEnvironment.

d. CheckGraphicalInternet.

e. CheckText-basedInternet.(Shouldalreadybechecked)

f. CheckServerConfiguration Tools.(Shouldalreadybechecked)

g. CheckWebServer.(Shouldalreadybechecked)

h. CheckMail Server.ClickDetailsforMailServerandcheckpostfix,then

clickOK

i. UncheckWindowsFileServer.

j. CheckDevelopmentTools.ClickDetailsforDevelopmentToolsand

checkexpect,thenclick OK

k. CheckAdministrationTools.(Shouldalreadybechecked)

l. CheckSystemTools.Click Detailsandchecknet-snmp-utils,thenclick

m. UncheckPrintingSupport.

11. ClickNextto exitthePackageGroupSelectionscreen

a. ClickonSessionandselectKDE.

selectSystem Tools->TerminalProgram-SuperUser Mode)andusethe pingcommandtoverifythatyoucancontact thefollowing devices:

a. Type:pingip_address(use theIPaddressof youre-mail(SMTP)server

ToinstallRSM forStorage,loginto theserverasroot.InserttheRemoteSupport Manager forStorageCDintotheCDROMdrive,andcontinuewithoneofthe following:

1. 1. RightclickontheCDROMicononthedesktopandselectMount.

2. Double clickontheautorun.shfileto starttheRSM forStorage installation

3. If theRSMforStorage cannotbestartedwiththeaboveprocedure,dothe

following

a. OpenaconsoleshellwindowbyclickingtheRed Haticononthelowerleft

side ofthescreenandselectSystem–>TerminalProgram–>SuperUser Mode.

b. Type thefollowingintothewindow:

cd /

mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom cd /media/cdrom

./autorun.sh

Therewillbeanumberofstatusmessagesasthesoftwareisinstalled. 4. Whentheinstallationiscomplete,removetheCDfromthedrive.

In theconsoleshellwindow,dothefollowing: 1. Createthepasswordsforuser″admin″:

a. Typersm-passwdadmin to setthepasswordfor theRSMfor Storage

browserinterface.Thisistheuserandpasswordthatwillbeused to configureandmanagetheRemoteSupport Manager.

b. Typepasswdadmin to setthepasswordfor theLinuxlogin.

2. Createthepasswordfor user″lservice″:

a. Typersm-passwdlserviceto setthepassword fortheRSM forStorage

browserinterface.Thisistheuserandpasswordthatcanbeusedlocally byIBMService.Thisusercannotconfigureorchangeanyof thesecurity aspectsof theRemote SupportManager. Itcanbeusedto view,

acknowledgeandclosealerts.

b. Next,typepasswdlservice tosetthepassword fortheLinuxlogin.

3. Logoutbyclickingtheredhaticon inthelowerleftandselectingLogout...,

thenselectingLogoutintheEndSessionfor″root″window. 4. Ontheloginscreen,dothefollowing:

5. Letthedesktop doitsfirsttime initialization.

7. Opena terminalconsolewindow, clicktheRed Haticon inthelowerleftand

selectSystemTools→Terminal, thenclosethewindow.This addstheRSM forStorage iconsto thedesktop.Thenexttime"lservice" logsin,the

backgroundappearancewillbechanged toanRSMforStorage background. 8. ThenselectLogoutintheEndSessionforlservicewindow.

9. Ontheloginscreen,dothefollowing:

10. Letthedesktop doitsfirsttime initialization.

12. Opena terminalconsolewindow, clicktheRed Haticon inthelowerleftand

selectSystemTools->Terminal, thenclosethewindow.Newiconshave beenplacedonthedesktop tofacilitatemanagement ofRSMfor Storage.The nexttime’admin’ logsin,thebackgroundappearancewillbechanged toa RSMforStorage background.
