HE & Access Guide 2015-16
The Soho Centre is located in the heart of London’s Soho and is a short walk from Oxford Circus, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and Tottenham Court Road underground stations. This is the main College centre for Access to Higher Education courses. It offers a wide range of English Language classes, including general and vocational ESOL courses, EFL and IELTS courses. The Soho Centre is also the base for the College Creative Learning Lab with media training facilities for hire.
Due to building works taking place in the Victoria Centre this academic year there is a possibility that your course may be held in a different location to the one shown in this guide. We will keep all applicants informed of any changes.
You can travel to any College Centre on the
Victoria Line
on the London Underground.
The Victoria Centre is in Westminster, a short walk from both Victoria and St James’s Park underground stations. It offers courses in the award winning School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality, which celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2010. It provides courses in Business, ICT and Enterprise as well as Higher Education and Foundation Degree courses that learners can progress to. It is also the home to the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy.
With 14 kitchens, demonstration theatres, multimedia and ICT suites and an extensive Learning Resource Centre, the Victoria Centre provides excellent facilities for learners. The College’s student-run restaurant, The Vincent Rooms is also located at the Victoria Centre as well as the Professional Development Centre.
This Centre is close to Great Portland Street, Euston Square, Regent’s Park and Warren Street underground stations. It offers ESOL/English courses and community based courses. It is also home to the New Directions Employability Centre, which provides employment training to help adults develop their skills and find employment.
The King’s Cross Centre is in Camden, less than ten minutes walking distance from King’s Cross mainline and underground station. It offers a wide range of academic and vocational courses for 14-19 year olds, including A-Levels and BTECs. It also provides courses for adult learners including Foundation Learning for students with learning difficulties. Built in 2009, the King’s Cross Centre has first-class learning facilities, including:

Westminster Kingsway College provides an opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to realise and achieve their business dreams. Enterprise is embedded into every course and all students are encouraged to develop enterprise skills, equipping them with the confidence to fulfil their aspirations. The College works with business professionals from a range of industries so that you can gain expert advice from leading entrepreneurs and discover how they succeeded. Foundation Degrees and Bachelor
of Arts (BA) Degrees
Westminster Kingsway College offers Foundation Degrees and Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree courses in vocational subjects, with many available on either a Full Time or part-time basis. These Higher Education courses are closely linked to employers’ requirements and prepare you for careers in Accounting, Business Management, Facilities Management, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management and Tourism Management.

Are you returning to study?
Adult Progression to Further StudyThe College offers preparation courses at Level 2 for students who are not quite ready to enrol on an Access to HE Diploma or Higher Education course. In addition to a Level 2 Certificate in Progression, where you will learn study and research skills, you will also study for a qualification in Maths and English at GCSE or Functional Skills level. Entry to the preparation course is dependent on the result of diagnostic testing within the first four weeks of the course. The entry requirements for this course are GCSEs in Maths and English (at grade D or above) or an equivalent qualification. You will need to bring your qualification certificates to your interview.
Level 1 and 2 Vocational Courses
Vocational courses are suitable if you want to study a more subject specific course
and are not quite ready for the Preparation for Access course. This is a fantastic opportunity to build your confidence and get to know more about the area in which you hope to build your career. We currently offer vocational courses in: Science and Engineering; Health and Social Care; Health Science and Social Care. If you decide to take this option you will complete qualifications in Functional Skills (Maths and English). There are no entry requirements for this course. We will decide on your suitability for the course depending on your initial diagnostic testing which will be completed at your interview.

Westminster Kingsway College offers Access to Higher Education Diplomas for students who want to progress onto University. The College is one of the largest providers of Access courses in London. They are designed to prepare you for Higher Education study by building your experiences gained during previous employment, travel or caring for a family.

Access to Higher Education Diploma
The Access to HE Diploma is a one year course offering an alternative pathway for adults who wish to progress onto Higher Education/University.
You will develop the subject knowledge, English Language and study skills that you will need to progress to higher study and gain a nationally recognised qualification.
At Westminster Kingsway College, we offer Access to Higher Education Diplomas at Level 3 in the following subjects:
• Business
• English and Media Studies • Health and Human Sciences • Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism • Law
• Midwifery • Nursing
• Pharmaceutical and Bio-Medical Sciences • Science and Engineering
• Sports Science • Teacher Training
Each course is built around key study skills where you will learn how to make notes, write essays, carry out research, develop ideas and gain experience in the range of assessment methods used in Higher Education.
You will study three core modules that are tailored to your needs and choice of pathway:
• Communication • Research Skills • Study Skills
You will also be expected to study three or four specialist modules, depending on the subject you choose. In order to gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma qualification you must gain a minimum of 45 units at Level 3 and 15 at Level 2 or 3.
Once you have successfully completed an Access to Higher Education Diploma you could progress onto a Higher Education course at a wide range of universities or Higher Education Institutions. If you have successfully completed the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Business or Hospitality, Leisure & Tourism you could progress onto a Foundation or Honours Degree course at the Victoria Centre.

Successful completion of this course could enable you to progress onto a Higher Education course in Business, Management, Accounting or a related subject area. This course offers specialist modules in Business & Management, Marketing and Finance & Accounting.

The teachers push us to achieve and now, through their eyes, I can see my potential. Westminster Kingsway College is like a big family. I feel that they teach you more in College as you get more personal attention and extra help. I am developing my own business further and have progressed with my studies.”

In order to progress to certain Higher Education courses, you may require GCSE English and/or GCSE Maths to fulfil your university entry requirements. Ideally you will already have GCSE Maths and English at grade A*-C. However we understand that not all students meet this requirement and so you will be considered for an Access course if you have one GCSE at grade A*-C in Maths or English and the other at grade D. A GCSE or functional skills course will be offered as an additional option for the Access course – please note that some GCSE classes may be delivered in the evening. If you don’t have any GCSEs or equivalent qualifications then we will be able to recommend you for another course based on the results of your initial assessment at interview.
What will I study?
You will study Biological Science, Physical Science, Psychology and Sociology. The course prepares you for a wide range of health related careers. It is similar in content to the Access Diploma for Nursing/Midwifery, but includes a greater variety of Science units, which upon successful completion could enable you progress to Degree courses including radiography, physiotherapy, speech therapy, paramedics, nutrition, community health and nursing.

This course is suitable for students aged 21 or over. Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if you have experience outside of full-time education, for example through work or travel. Applicants will be assessed through application, interview and tests in English and Maths. Applicants for a Degree in health sciences are expected to have some experience of voluntary or paid work in a health care setting. Ideally you should also have some knowledge of a science-based subject or have a science-based GCSE or equivalent qualification.

You can choose between Full Time or part-time study on most Degree courses. What are Foundation Degrees?
• Foundation Degrees were launched in 2000 as a partnership between colleges, universities and employers. They are one of the fastest growing Higher Education qualifications in the UK. • A Foundation Degree is a Level 4/5 qualification
and the equivalent to the first two years of a full Honours Degree.
• A Foundation Degree is a recognised qualification in its own right.
• In 2001, 4,000 students were studying on Foundation Degrees. By 2014, this figure had grown to over 180,000 students.
• Over half of the students on Foundation Degrees are studying on a part-time basis.
• 75% of students are over 21 when they begin studying for a Foundation Degree.
Westminster Kingsway College offers Foundation Degrees on a full-time, day-release, part-time day and/or evening basis, allowing you to fit your course around your work or family commitments.
All Westminster Kingsway College Degrees are validated by the College’s partner universities, London South Bank University and Sheffield Hallam University. We work closely with the university partners to ensure that our Degrees meet the highest educational standards.

These are the equivalent of the third year of a Degree programme (Level 6) and are offered as a one year programme for full-time study and two year programme for part-time study.

The Foundation Degree also provides full exemptions from the Institute of Financial Accountants (IFA) Level 4 and 5 examinations. Italian graduate Laura Favretto was awarded the best dissertation award at the College’s Higher Education Graduation ceremony after studying at Westminster Kingsway College to achieve her degree.
Laura said: “I found the course quite challenging especially as English is not my first language but I had lots of study support from the College. The skills that I learnt I could take into work and the visits and study trips were very useful. The lecturers at Westminster Kingsway College are willing to help you anytime and the smaller groups mean that everyone helps everyone. I have now applied for positions in Event Management and would like to use my new skills as well as my languages.”
