Welcome to the Melting Class (TMC)!
TMC is a project that is free and open to everyone. It is an English course where you get to practice the language with people from all over the world. You will be able to discuss current events, as well as work on grammatical structures and expand your vocabulary for speaking purposes mainly. Some of you may need English for professional or academic purposes; others may need it for personal purposes or tourism. You are all welcome granted you have registered on our website, and the class still has space.
I. Course Goal and Objectives:
This course is geared toward building English competency with an emphasis on speaking, in addition to developing a multicultural awareness of our different societies.
II. Course specifics:
Duration: 8 weeks
Online Face-to-face: once a week – 1.5 hours
Extra weekly support: weekly additional content through Whatsapp group and/or Telegram III. Curriculum:
The following curriculum is broken down in blocks of 2 weeks. Each block lists the content covered as well as the corresponding Student Learning Objectives.
A. English Language Content:

Students will be able to:

SLO 1.1 Use Present Progressive verb tenses describing different activities and hobbies.
SLO 1.2 Use correct pronunciation in a conversation.
SLO 1.3 Memorize and use 8 new words about activities, hobbies, and sports.
SLO 1.4 Convey information activities, hobbies, and sports clearly in a conversation with an 80% level of intelligibility from listeners.

Students will be able to:
3-4 Grammar:
Past Progressive verb tense
Positive and negative past BE + verb + ing Single and plural BE + verb + ing
Vocabulary:
Continue using vocabulary about activities, hobbies, and sports.
Speaking:
Talk about activities, hobbies, and sports. Work with partners to discuss your activities that you did last week in a conversation.
SLO 2.1 Use Past Progressive verb tense in a conversation with partners.
SLO 2.2 Memorize and use 10 new words about activities, hobbies, and sports.
SLO 2.3 Use correct pronunciation in a conversation.
SLO 2.4 Convey information about activities, hobbies, and sports with an 80% level of intelligibility from listeners.
Week Content Student Learning Objectives (SLO) Students will be able to:
5-6 Grammar:
Future Progressive verb tense.
Positive BE + going to and Negative BE + going to.
Single and plural BE + verb + ing Vocabulary:
Review words about activities, hobbies, and sports.
Speaking:
Talk about activities that you will or won’t do using Future Progressive verbs. Work with partners to discuss your past activities in a conversation.
SLO 3.1 Use Future Progressive verb tense (positive and negative) BE + going to about activities in the future.
SLO 3.2 Memorize and use 10 news words to describe future progressive action.
SLO 3.3 Use correct pronunciation in a conversation
SLO 3.4 Ask questions about future activities in a conversation with an 80% level of intelligibility from listeners.

Students will be able to:
7-8 Grammar:
Review positive and negative, single and plural Present, Past, and Future Progressive verb tenses Vocabulary:
Use all the new words that you learned about daily activities, hobbies, and sports.
Speaking:
Work with partners in a conversation. Ask and answer questions using Present, Past, and Future Progressive verbs.
Post test - Speaking
SLO 4.1 Use positive and negative, single and plural Present, Past, and Future Progressive verbs accurately.
SLO 4.2 Use words about activities, hobbies, and sports in context.
SLO 4.3 Use correct pronunciation in a conversation
SLO 4.4 Ask and answer questions about a variety of activities, hobbies, and sports in a conversation with an 80% level of intelligibility from listeners.
B. Global competency to be developed (not measured):
- Develop an understanding of another culture and compare and contrast with own.
- Develop critical thinking regarding own culture: being critical does not automatically mean to criticize.
- Develop a better understanding of relations between culture, nature and economy.
- Develop an understanding of the principle of “Respecting for others without automatically having to accept for self.”
- Develop an understanding of the principle of “Exposing your views without imposing them.”
- Develop an understanding of universal principles beyond our cultural particularities.
- Develop a better understanding of Social Justice.
IV. Attendance:
The course only meets once/week and runs for 8 weeks. This means that you will have face-to-face interaction 8 times. If you exceed one absence, you will automatically be removed from the class to allow students on the waiting list to attend. You will, however, be allowed to register for the next 8-week session.
V. Evaluation:
Note that a pre-test and a post-test will be administered to evaluate, place and observe the progression of our students. The test will be evaluated according to the Common European Framework of References for English as a Second Language.
Throughout the course, students will also have evaluation to monitor their progress. These tests will be quantitative, qualitative and both at the same time. See Proficiency Descriptors & Grading Scale below
