Easter Sunday

“Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.”

- COLOSSIANS 3:2

On this day we thank God for His Son, Jesus, who died, rose and opened the gates of heaven for us. We celebrate and sing “Alleluia.” Let’s try to keep the joy of this Easter season in our hearts throughout the year! Pray daily and listen for how God is calling each of us to joy- fully use our gifts to fulfill His salvation plan.

Easter Sunday

Today, we gather to celebrate the resurrection of

Jesus Christ. We have sung wonderful hymns

that speak of our praise, adoration and joy! But,

in reality, every Sunday in the Catholic Church is

an Easter Sunday because we remember Christ’s

resurrection each week. Thank you for your gen-

erous weekly offerings, your stewardship of your

time, your talent, and your treasure. They make

it possible for St. John the Evangelist to be able

to preach the Easter message every day.

Weekly Reflection

April 4, 2021 Easter Sunday

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

To the great joy of every Christian since those early days, right up to this April morning in 2021, the irreversible fact of the matter of the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is more real than many another supposed event in history. It is awesome in the original meaning of that very overworked word. It is the main reason for hav- ing any faith in Christianity. It is our power and peace through the Holy Trinity living in us to counteract the har- ried human world of the twenty-first century. It has been such for all the centuries before or since.

I used to ask my high schoolers what was the most im- portant feast day of the year, and inevitably they would answer “Christmas.” Easy to understand why when you consider all the hullabaloo with which the secular world surrounds the twenty-fifth of December. But Christmas is primarily meaningful in the light of Easter. It marks the birth of God made man. In fact, the 4 Gospels them- selves were written well after the Resurrection. That im- mediately offers us the lens through which to view the words and deeds of Jesus in His earthly life which they record.

Yes, He is risen! That means among other things that our Faith has a basis; our Hope a fulfillment; and our Love a motivation. The dream of eternal union with God is possible. As a result of Christ’s rising, optimism is the only right viewpoint to hold, largely because Satan has no ultimate victory in his plan to win over humanity. It is the Day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice in it, and be glad. God love you and give you His Easter peace.

Saint of the Week

Bernadette Soubirous, Virgin

The oldest child of a family living in extreme poverty in Lourdes, France, Bernadette was born in January, 1844.

Never healthy in her lifetime, she suffered asthma and other maladies during her childhood that stunted her growth and kept her from attending school. The result, and Berna- dette’s inability to read, meant that she could not receive her First Communion until she was about fourteen. It was at about this time that Bernadette experienced her visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These visions continued for some time, and in the end, many people believed because of her.

The city of Lourdes remains a holy place and a pilgrimage destination for many today.

St. Bernadette was canonized by Pope Pius XI in Decem- ber, 1933. She is the patron of Lourdes as well as of those suffering bodily ills, and of those who are ridiculed for their poverty. She is honored on April 18 in France.

Bernadette's message today: All of us have been given gifts by God, even those who are suffering. We are meant to use these gifts for the benefit of those around us.

The Resurrection

St. Paul has the understanding that Jesus Christ “will change our lowly body to be like his glorious

body” (Phil.3:21). In the resurrection of the dead we will indeed have our bodies, but they will be transformed from the earthly to the heavenly. An analogy may be made with the Eucharist, where the fruit of the earth is transformed into the bread come down from heaven.

An analogy may also be made with the Catholic and Or- thodox doctrine of the Assumption (Dormition) of Mary.

Her glorified body gives us a glimpse of what will become of all the redeemed, when our earthly bodies are trans- formed into the heavenly. Various Marian apparitions are privately revealed illustrations of the fact that we real- ly will hold onto our bodies, though glorified, in eternal life. Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared as a very real and very beautiful Native American mother pregnant with new life.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY April 11, 2021

Confessions: 2:00—3:00PM Adoration & Chaplet: 3:00PM

Sunday April 11th marks Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the entire Roman Catholic Church. A Priest will be available to hear Confessions from 2:00 – 3:00pm. Our 3:00pm service will in- clude recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Eucharistic Adoration.

Officially instituted by Saint John Paul II in the Jubilee Year of 2000, Divine Mercy Sunday was requested by Jesus in the early 20th century when He revealed Himself to the Polish nun Saint Faustina Kowalska to remind mankind of His unyielding burn- ing love and mercy for all. Read the words below that Jesus spoke to St. Faustina and join us for this extraordinary Feast Day:

"

On that day (Divine Mercy Sunday) the very depths of My

tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces

upon those souls who approach the font of My mercy. The

soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Commun-

ion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punish-

ment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which

grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to

Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so

great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to

fathom it throughout all eternity." (Diary of Sr. Faustina,

699)

MERCY CORNER

Just as the Father gave us the Son out of love, and the Son gave himself to us out of the same love, so we too can love other as God has loved us, giving our lives for one another. Faith in God becomes goodness, faith in the crucified and risen Christ becomes the strength to love to the end, even our enemies. The proof of authentic faith in Christ is self-giving and the spreading of love for our neighbors, especially for those who do not merit it, for the suffering and for the margin- alized. Whoever experiences divine mercy, is im- pelled to be an architect of mercy among the least and the poor. In these “littlest brothers”

Jesus awaits us (Matthew 25:40). Let us receive mercy and let us give mercy as we celebrate Easter in the joy of God!

Easter Sunday

Theme: Jesus has risen.

Breaking Open the Word

Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Second Read- ing, from Colossians

Step One: Listen to the Word

As you hear this very brief reading, what words or phrases strike you? What image or feeling lingers for you?

Step Two: Look into Your Life

Question for Children: What sacrifices do you make for those whom you love?

Question for Youth: Even the disciples had a hard time understanding Jesus’ Resurrection – it is that surprising.

What does Resurrection mean to you? What does Easter mean to you?

Question for Adults: In what ways has God called you to die in Christ? How is this expressed in your own life?
