How ProActive e-learning works

for Doncaster College…

Doncaster College is the largest provider of further education

in South Yorkshire. Their Hospitality and Catering department

uses the ProActive package with Professional Cookery learners

at Level 2. David Bird, a former lecturer at the college, explains

how ProActive has worked for them…

Links theory with practice

We use ProActive for our theory, which makes

people sit up and ask, ‘What does this enable?’. It enables learners to interact at the same time as I’m delivering the teaching, which is good as they are not just sat there at the back of the classroom not taking an active role in what is going on.

Complete fl exibility in delivery

There’s more fl exibility in teaching with ProActive.

I can move easily between screens, so it’s not as rigid as a PowerPoint lesson would be. Students can also go away and use ProActive to reinforce

what was taught in the lesson. Or, if they miss part of the lesson, or miss the lesson in general, they can have the whole thing set up again to use in the comfort of their own homes. Then, if they’ve got any questions they’ll come back and ask.

Effi ciency and variety of learning

I think ProActive has improved the effi ciency of our teaching and learning. The video clips are very good – for example, the meat presentation activity where they can drag and drop the joints to where they should be. For this sort of thing it’s a lot better for our learners. I know they prefer ProActive rather than me stood up there doing my ‘alternative’ drawings on the board of fi sh and everything else!

“I really do love ProActive. It sinks into my head more somehow and

it’s just so much easier to learn. It’s much easier than waiting for a

teacher or tutor to start writing on the board. It just sinks in better.”

Sharon, NVQ Level 2 learner, Doncaster College
