Inline High Shear Mixers

For the continuous processing or batch recycling of

products, we have a complete range of high shear

inline mixers from the 0.25 kW laboratory unit to the

125 kW Multi Shear Mill. Designed to exacting

standards, their construction makes it physically

impossible for any materials liquid or solid to bypass

the precision rotor/stator work head. The machine's

own high volume centrifugal action - from 10

Liter/minute up m 250,000 liter/hour - will in most cases

satisfy the user's requirements without the need for

auxiliary pumps

Polymer and Bitumen

The Blend Preparation of

Large volumes of polymer-bitumen

blends are used in roofing, road

surfacing and waterproofing

applications, and the mixing process

employed can have a significant

effect on both the technical

properties of the resulting blend and

the economies of the whole

operation. A number of factors

influence the mixing process and it is

the object of this bulletin to describe

these factors and their significance

and to outline how the operation

may be optimized.

The last of these is not strictly an

independent variable, but its

importance in the context of

subsequent performance of the

blend warrants its inclusion here.

The parameters influencing the

mixing process may be defined as

follows:

* Nature (grade) of polymer

* Physical form of polymer

* Nature and grade of bitumen

* Type of equipment

* Time-temperature profile during

mixing

Waterproof Felts

Saturating

Consist of a fibrous felt which is

impregnated and/or coated with

bitumen. Traditionally, the felt was

made from the waste rags of wool,

cotton or linen but more recently

these have been replaced by

cheaper materials such as wood

fiber, jute, manila hemp or waste

paper. Glass fiber is increasingly

used and holds up to 50 % of the

market in certain countries.

Synthetic fiber felts (low-density

polyethylene, polypropylene, and

polyester, acetylated polyvinyl

alcohol, sometimes reinforced with

glass fiber) are also used; their main

advantage is a much greater

resistance to rupture when stretched

by 5 % or more as a result of

movement of the roof.

They also have a greater tensile

strength and resistance to rotting

than conventional felts but they are

more expensive and may be

sensitive to thermal damage during

manufacture.

Depending on the type of felt, the

manufacturing processes can

consist of as many as three steps:

If the felt is of an absorbent type,

that is, most types made from

natural fibers, it will contain up to 7%

m of water even when it appears to

be dry. It may therefore need drying

before it

is treated with bitumen.

Felt is saturated by passing through a tank of hot

bitumen. It may be passed over a series of rollers in

the tank to increase the residence time and aid

impregnation; it may also be sprayed with bitumen

before entering the tank.

Another technique is to apply hot bitumen by means of

rollers to one side of the felt before it enters the tank

and so drive any water out of the felt to reduce

foaming. The bitumen in the tank is at such a

temperature to produce a viscosity of less than 200

cSt; this corresponds to 160-170°C for the usual

grades (80/ 100 or 180/200 pen). Substantially higher

temperatures of about 200°C giving viscosities down

to 20 cSt are sometimes used in order to reduce

residence time and so increase throughput. If foaming

in the tanks is experienced, a few ppm of a silicone

anti-foam agent should be added to the bitumen.

(11)

Incinerator Furnace

In a blown bitumen process, some gases are produced and will be incinerated for

ecological environment conditions

In another process, some waste containing PVC, rubber and so on require to be

treated after combustion prior to being discharged to the atmosphere.

Depending on the type of gases to be treated, we provide three filtering :

Dry-process filtering

Semidry-process filtering

Wet-process filtering

Bitumens are miscible with each other in all proportions. The penetration and softening

point of a blend of two bitumens can be estimated using the blending charts by joining with a

straight line the points an the vertical scales giving the penetrations or softening points of the

grades to be blended and then using the horizontal scale to read the proportions of the blend of

the required proportions. These charts are quite accurate for blends of bitumen of the same

type (same PI), i.e. two penetration grades or two blown grades. They are however, inaccurate

when used for a blend of a penetration grade with a blown grade, giving figures which are too

"hard", that is, the actual blend will have a higher penetration and a lower softening point than

the straight line, blending chart predicts. The properties of such blends should be determined

experimentally.

Bitumen may be mixed with a wide variety of petroleum fractions for different applications.

Volatile light fractions (white spirit, naphtha) are used for cutbacks where rapid drying is

required. Medium fractions (kerosene, gas oil), are used where a longer drying time is

permissible. Heavier cuts (in the luboil range) are used where permanent softening is required

-these blends are virtually equal to a softer grade of bitumen.

* the heavier the solvent fraction, the better the solvent

* the more aromatic the fraction, the better the solvent

The recommended temperature limits for handling bitumen for long-term storage, short term

storage and maximum safe working conditions are as follows:

Bitumen/Filler

Fillers are finely divided substances

which are insoluble in bitumen but cart be

mixtures dispersed in it as a means of

modifying its consistency and mechanical

properties. They are usually mineral materials;

organic fillers such as wood flour or cork dust

are rarely used. Typical mineral fillers are

limestone dust, cement, hydrated lime, slate

dust, pulverized fuel ash, talc, silica and

asbestos. Non-fibrous fillers usually have a

particle size of less than 75 micron (um). The

general effect of adding filler to bitumen is to

make it harder and stiffer in practical terms

means that there is a reduction in the

deformation or produced by a given load and is

shown by an increase in softening point and

reduction in penetration and an increase in

stiffness. The extent of this hardening or

stiffening effect depends on the amount of filler

added and on its particle shape, size and

grading. Normal fillers such as limes or slate

dust produce the least effect; fillers with

plate-like particles, such as are intermediate, and

fibrous fillers such as asbestos* show the

greatest effect for a given concentration of filler.

Hydrated lime is much more effective than

limestone. The volume percentage must be

calculated from the weight and density of the

material and not estimated from the volume of

filler added. For normal fillers, the effect of the

filler on the penetration and softening point

roughly proportional to the filler concentration

for concentrations up to about 40% v of the

mixture. For fibrous fillers, the upper limit for

proportional behaviors is much lower.

Colloidal Mills

* Rotation speed which affects the size and distribution of the bitumen particles.

At certain critical speeds, decantation phenomena occur causing a reduction in emulsion quality.

These colloid mills operate continuously and they are fed with the dispersing and dispersed

phases by adjustable flow rate pumps. Certain bitumen-based emulsions have special

characteristics and must be manufactured under pressure in specially designed colloid mills.

Equipment adapted to this special emulsifying mode must be provided upstream and downstream.

Emulsion definition

Emulsifying equipment

There are various other types of colloid

mills and their main characteristics are:

An emulsion is a dispersion of two immiscible

fluids in each other generally prepared using a

product called an emulsifier or an emulsifying

agent. Bitumen emulsification consists in

dividing it into fine electrically-charged

particles provided with an inter-repelling

capacity.

Industrial manufacture of emulsions uses

custom-made equipment providing thorough

mixing capacities to provide varying fineness

and stability dispersions. Colloid mills are

usually used to manufacture emulsions.

Manufacture may also be by gradual enriching

of the dispersing phase.

* an adjustable or fixed air gap between the

rotor and the stator. The air gap spacing has a

direct effect on the emulsion fineness.

The Air Blowing Process

The physical properties of asphalts may

further be modified by 'air blowing'. This

is an oxidation process which involves

the blowing of air through the asphalts,

either on a batch or a continuous basis,

with the short residue at a temperature of

240°C to 320°C.

After preheating, the short residue is

introduced into the blowing column just

below the normal liquid level. Air is blown

through the bitumen by means of an air

distributor located at the bottom of the

column. The air is not only the reactant

but also serves to agitate and mix the

bitumen, thereby increasing the surface

area and rate of reaction. Oxygen is

consumed by the bitumen as the air

ascends through the material. Steam and

water are sprayed into the vapour space

above the bitumen level, the former to

suppress foaming and dilate the oxygen

content of waste gases and the latter

cools the vapors to prevent after-burning.

The "blown" product flows from the

bottom of the blowing column into a

surge drum via an external draw-off line.

In this way the minimum level of product

in the blowing column is controlled.

From the surge drum the blown product

is passed through heat exchangers to

achieve the desired "rundown"

temperatures and to provide an

economical means of preheating the

short residue, before pumping the

product to storage.

Description of the continuous blowing

process

The penetration and softening point of the

blown bitumen are affected by:

* the viscosity of the feedstock

* the temperature in the blowing column

* the residence time in the blowing column

* the origin of the crude oil used to manufacture

the feedstock

* the air-to-feed ratio

The blowing process dehydrogenates the short

residue, resulting in oxidation and poly

condensation, increasing the overall molecular

size of the asphaltenes already present in the

feed and forming additional asphaltenes from the

malthene phase.

The reaction is exothermic. Therefore close

temperature control of this process is required,

which is achieved by regulating the air-to-short

residue ratio in the blowing column.

DEMUL E

is an emulsifier to manufacture slow and super stable cationic asphalt emulsions * DESCRIPTION

Amine - imidazoline of natural mixtures resins. Aspect: a solid brown dust.

Solubility: Scarce in water pH neuter, pH 1 - 2 a complete dissolution is obtained by shaken Properties: The characteristics of the final emulsion depend on:

The nature and type of the asphalt utilizing. The dosage of DEMUL L.

The water solution pH.

Although all these factors must be previously evaluated by tests carried out in laboratories, DEMUL L allows the preparation of slow and super stable emulsions of excellent quality which is suitable for most of the road asphalts. DEMUL L can also be successfully used with different rocky aggregates, since it is possible to obtain slow

breakage but quick healing emulsions (set time 15 minutes) suitable for the manufacture of both, slurry, which needs a quick opening to the traffic, and super stable emulsions, which need to be mixed for a long period without breaking the emulsion.

* DOSAGE: We recommend DEMUL L uses in doses for slow or super stable emulsions vary from 0.5 to 0.8 % (between 5 and 8 Kg per ton).

* USE: To facilitate DEMUL L dissolution it is convenient introduce 50% of the total amount of water to be used into the emulsion and heat it (60ºC - 70ºC).

* Add hydrochloric acid to keep pH between 1.5 and 2.

* Add DEMUL L slowly and shake it in an energetic way for 30 minutes.

* Add the rest of water and control the pH until it reaches the expected value. Keep on shaking it for another 30 minutes.

Phase Separator

New technology for even higher

efficiency.

State-of-the-art materials.

Flexible, modular design.

Stages

The phase separator consists of modular

components of a flexible system - no

compromises, easy to upgrade and to

modify. The basic idea of the phase

separator is embodied in the phase

separation stage. It comprises the base

plate, the phase separative elements,

which perform the function of separating

the droplets in the process, and the cross

support. The phase separation stage

forms a functional unit which is easy to

handle. Simple upgrading and adaptation

are a basic design principle.

The dimensions of the phase separator

vessel are determined on the basis of the

process calculation. If pressure vessels

are used, each phase separator is

calculated separately in compliance with

the country-specific regulations.

There are no restrictions as to the vessel

material:

- Steel

- Stainless steel

- Plastic

- With inner coating, e.g. rubber coated

or enameller

In many cases also existing vessels or

separators may be upgraded with a phase

separation stage as a functional unit.

Watery Phase Pumps

Specially to use in Bitumen Emulsion Plants

Centrifugal pumps operate by developing high flow speeds and turning that speed into pressure

in a decreasing flow rate. Its installation is vertical and has a hydraulic seal system allowing the

use of the unit empty of fluid without causing damages because there is no friction among its

parts (like the mechanical sealed pump, stuffing box, etc.)

We also have an innovative centrifugal mechanical hydraulic seal, that in addition to the

characteristics of hydraulic seals it also avoids leakage between the on and off action of the

engine. The construction of this seal is made in different kinds of materials according to the fluid

it will pump (Monel 400, Stainless Steel, Titanium, etc.) For the correct choosing of the material

you need to bear in mind: - the kind of fluid to pump, flow, temperature of the fluid, viscosity,

unload pressure, Anpa available. Our equipment fits Chemical Industry, Petrochemical,
