Overview

 BS 5950-1 gives recommendations for the design of structural steelwork using hot rolled steel sections, flats, plates, hot finished structural hollow sections and cold formed structural hollow sections, in buildings and allied structures not specifically covered by other standards.

 BS 5950-1 has been amended to take into account the issue of a number of new related standards adopting European or international standards for materials and processes, plus revisions to standards for loading.

 Technically updated clauses include those for: • sway stability

• avoidance of disproportionate collapse • resistance to brittle fracture

• local buckling

• lateral-torsional buckling • shear resistance

• stiffeners

• members subject to combined axial force and bending moment • joints

(2)

• connections • testing

 In all cases the reason for changing the recommendations on a topic is structural safety, but where possible some adjustments based on improved knowledge have also been made to the recommendations on these topics to offset potential reductions in economy.

 Some of the text has been edited to reduce the risk of misapplication. In addition some topics omitted until now have been added, including separators and diaphragms and eccentric loads on beams.

knowledgecentre@bsigroup.com, +44 20 8996 7004  Overview

BS 5950-5:1998 gives recommendations for the design of structural steelwork in buildings and allied structures using cold formed sections. It is primarily intended for steel sections of

thickness up to 8 mm. Requirements for materials and construction are given in BS 5950-7. Sections may be either open or closed and should be made up of flat elements bounded either by free edges or by bends with included angles not exceeding 1358 and internal radii not exceeding 5t where t is the material thickness.

Closed sections may be made either:

i) by joining together two previously formed open sections by continuous welding;

ii) from a single flat strip, by forming the corners to make a box, and continuously welding the longitudinal joint.

Welded cold formed hollow sections conforming to BS EN 10219 are not covered by this part of BS 5950.

(4)

NOTE Cold formed products conforming to BS EN 10219 are the subject of amendments to BS 5950-1 and -2 which are in preparation.
