What’s the Buzz

Bobby?

Honoring our children whom have active duty parents is one of the greatest things I have had the pleasure of being a part of. Working with AF Child and Youth Programs for the last 20 years has provided me a small modicum of insight into the

life of a military child. Often times I have heard that they have the best life, two parents, steady income, and the chance to travel all over the world. The outward appearance that everything is great. What “outsides” do not realize is that there is

a lot of stress, sadness, and loneliness that comes with being a military child. Today as I reflect on the military child I am reminded of days when a parent has returned to base after a deployment, surprising their child whom they haven’t seen

in 6 months. The tears, smiles, hugs and joyous greetings. There is nothing more heart stopping than seeing the tight hug a child will give his parent when they are

reunited after deployment.

The two teenagers I watched grow up into beautiful young adults had both parents deployed together for years, often being sent to grandparents for the duration of

a 6 month, and even longer deployment. Spending half of the year in a different school, making new friends and even having different academic expectations

because the schools are not the same. They are resilient.

Boys and Girls Clubs celebrates Youth of the Year, which our military teens participate in. What does the club mean to you is often the topic for their speech.

The first banquet I went to, I sat across from my teen’s parents. Listening to my teen’s speech brought home the reality of what our teen’s experience. Watching her mom and dad with tears rolling down their cheeks. The reality of being a military teen. I ensure my siblings have their homework done, fed, and ready for bed each night, because my dad is deployed and my mom who is also active duty has to work into the evening hours. I dealt with stress by abusing over the counter

pain meds. I just moved to a new home, new school, and new climate. I found a home in my Youth Center on base, made new friends, and found a new path. I am

resilient.

Now being with our youngest children on base, I work with staff on how to help children through the emotions of deployment, moving, and other life events that

create stress for a child. Recognizing key indicators and helping a child work through their emotions helps them process and work through things in a healthier

way. Often times I meet with parents in regards to extreme behavior changes to help the family process what is happing in their little one’s life.

Our military children are an example of how I hope our adults’ process life. If we are able to learn anything from our children it is that life does change, people come and go, but we can adapt and become better people for our challenges.
