Fee Deferrals

Fee deferrals are available for some Continuing Studies certificate programs. This process allows students to pay for their tuition in installments without interest charges while the program is in progress. Contact Continuing Studies for more information.

Refund Policy

Students will be issued a full refund if Okanagan College cancels a course. Okanagan College reserves the right to cancel or postpone a course due to low enrolment, unavailability of instructors, facilities, or other unforeseen circumstances. If it is necessary to cancel a class, Okanagan College will provide students with 48 hours notice whenever possible.

Non-Certificate Program

Withdrawal

We will be pleased to refund course fees if you withdraw at least two business days (48 hours) in advance of the class start date. No refund will be issued if you withdraw with less than two business days notice. Please allow 30 days for processing and mailing of refunds. Refunds do not include cost of books or other supplies.

Registered students withdrawing prior to the start of certificate programs will be subject to a $200 nonrefundable fee. It is the student’s responsibility to be informed about refund policies and to contact Continuing Studies in writing when withdrawing.

Audio Engineering &

Music Production Certificate

Would you like to produce digital recordings for musicians and music groups? Mix live concerts and sound reinforcement for public events? Work on audio postproduction for film, video, and computer animations and games? This 700-hour program provides training to develop the skills needed to operate analog and digital studio recording programming and processing equipment. Autism Spectrum Certificate

This 81-hour program is for persons who work, interact and live with persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Courses will provide a thorough overview of ASD focusing on both theory and practical skills that will be useful for professionals, parents and/ or caregivers. Multiple strategies, examples and tips, as well as concrete suggestions and in-depth resource listings that can be used to greatly enhance the quality of interactions with persons with autism in home, educational, daycare, social work or caregiver settings will be presented.

AutoCAD Skills Certificate

If you want to work in today’s drafting and design industry, you must be able to use the industry-standard AutoCAD software. In this program, you will be trained to prepare technical drawings for a variety of manufacturers, including those in the machining, electronics, and woodworking fields. You will also learn the basic CAD skills required to prepare working drawings for architecture, surveying, mapping, and graphic arts.

Bartending Certificate

Have you always wanted to work in a bar and get paid to interact with people? In this hands-on course, you’ll learn how to make today’s most popular cocktails in seconds and impress guests with your mixology skills. During the 80 hours of training, you’ll also get experience working in a real bar as part of your practicum. Potential employers will be blown away by your ability to set up a bar, use the equipment, count cash fast and supervise staff. Before going on practicum, students must present their Serving it Right certification, which is offered on-line. Basic Accounting Certificate

If you’re working to keep the books competently for a small business, or are interested in an entry-level accounting job, this 66-hour hands-on program can provide you with the necessary expertise. It also provides a good foundation for those interested in pursuing computer-based accounting at a later date. You will learn accounting concepts, generally accepted accounting principles, and the rules of debit and credit. You’ll review the accounting cycle for a service business, learn how to manage a general ledger, prepare financial statements, periodic adjustments, and year-end books. You’ll also learn about specialized journals and how to track customers and vendors for a merchandising business, as well as inventory concepts, sales taxes, internal cash controls, and payroll preparation.

Graduates of this program can apply for transfer credit into BUAD 111.

Custodial Worker Certificate

Custodians are an important part of every workplace. Ensure the buildings you take care of are as safe and sanitary as possible after taking this 94-hour program. Through hands-on tasks outside the classroom, you’ll learn everything there is to know about floor care, including mopping, stripping, buffing, and polishing. You’ll also discover insider secrets about how to keep carpets and rugs looking clean and beautiful. Equipment safety, chemical use, and how to best clean walls, washrooms and windows are other skills you’ll use in your workday as a valued custodian. Feb. - Apr. or Sep. - Dec., two nights per week as well as a few Saturdays.

Dental Office

Administrative Assistant

This 120-hour program is an introduction to the basic skills necessary for employment as a dental office administrative assistant, including front desk skills. Students will receive an introduction to dentistry and routine dental procedures, and learn maintenance of patient records, insurance forms, appointment control, and record keeping within a computerized environment. Emphasis is on effective oral and written communication and professionalism in the dental office.

Education Assistant Certificate

If you love kids and are looking for a career that challenges and inspires you every day, this program is for you! This 447-hour program prepares you to work as an Education Assistant in a school setting with an emphasis on working as part of a team. Duties include helping to implement the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that has been developed by the team for individual children with exceptionalities in the areas of: cognitive abilities, physical challenges, severe health issues, behavioural challenges, autism and related disorders.

Students of this program will gain hands-on experience through a 120-hour practicum in the classroom.

This program runs two evenings per week as well as alternate Saturdays.

Floral Design Certificate

This 150-hour certificate program prepares students to work as floral designers and to upgrade the abilities and skills of those currently working in the field. Emphasis is on retail floristry, including small businesses and franchise retail outlets. Program content concentrates on the basic principles of plant care, floral design, and floral arrangements for special events. Students will be eligible to write the Basic Florist Skills accreditation examination with Flowers Canada, after successfully completing this program along with practical experience in a retail florist business.

Golf Course

Maintenance Certificate

There are many fun and exciting jobs at a golf course. The maintenance department is in charge of the most important aspects of the golf course, the upkeep and improvements. Join us in this 92-hour program and get hit with subjects such as basic botany, soils, turf grass and trees. Get ready to take your clubs out and hit a few balls as well.

An OFA 1 course must be completed before the certificate will be awarded. Please see First Aid and Safety for dates.

Green Building Design

and Construction Certificate

As the economy and population continue to expand, the design, construction and operation community will face increasing challenges to meet the new demands of facilities that are accessible, secure, healthy, and productive while minimizing their impact on the environment. For the design, construction/renovation, operation, and decommissioning of a facility, there is an important relationship between the indoor and outdoor environments - the building connection. This 360-hour certificate program gives students the skills and hands on experience to design and create building envelopes with a sustainable focus on the main functions of the design and construction of the building envelope, including solar and thermal control, indoor air quality, acoustics, aesthetics, construction waste management and cost effectiveness. All phases of facility lifecycle are examined, balancing environmental stewardship with mission and function of the facility. This program will be offered through Distance Education. Interior Decorating Certificate

Do you always get compliments on the stylish furniture and unique accessories in your home? Maybe it’s time to turn your decorating talents into a decorating career. In this 162-hour program, you’ll learn the basics of interior decorating - how to draw floor plans and sketch furniture, as well as the advanced - how to mix fabrics, employ light and choose accessories. In your final project, you’ll show how you can create a home design that is functional, beautiful and on-budget. With this certificate, you’ll be able to start your interior decorating career. The Introduction to Office Administration certificate program teaches a comprehensive package of skills designed to ensure that your application demands serious consideration from potential employers, even if you’ve had little or no previous work experience. This challenging program blends coursework in all of the interpersonal and technical skills essential for success in an office. You’ll learn to problem-solve, multi-task, and work effectively in a team. You’ll become adept at the language of business, both written and spoken, as well as math and basic accounting, whether manual or

Landscape Horticulture Certificate

So, you’ve got a green thumb. Why not use it to make a living doing what you love? In this 120-hour program, you’ll learn all about botany basics and soil science, including which ornamental plants are best for BC’s Interior. During the landscape construction component, you’ll have a chance to dig deeper into plant selection, irrigation systems, installing turf grass, pest management, pruning and cultivating.

With its focus on prevention, this 26-week (805-hour) program prepares you for a career combating micro-organisms, creating safe and hygienic environments for patients. You will gain a comprehensive knowledge of aseptic techniques, infection control, cleaning, sterilization, the handling and storage of sterile supplies and decontamination procedures. A 400-hour practicum in a hospital setting allows you to apply your learning while gaining valuable work experience.

This 254-hour program prepares students for employment in reception, clerical or assisting positions in medically-oriented facilities such as hospitals and doctors’ offices. Students will acquire skills to use effective oral and written communication techniques, demonstrate office procedures and time management, apply medical terminology in all courses, obtain a good understanding on the use of computers in the business environment, perform computer medical billing, and apply medical office guidelines and standards. Students will also learn to understand and adhere to medical/ legal aspects.

Nursing Unit Assistant Certificate

If caring for people, being part of a team, and a fast-paced work environment sounds like your ideal career, this program is for you. A nursing unit assistant is a key member of a hospital health care team who assembles and maintains patient charts, handles the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients, processes physicians’ orders relating to medications, laboratory and diagnostic tests, and surgical or treatment plans, and performs standard receptionist duties. This program prepares you to work in a nursing unit with 324 hours of classroom instruction plus hands-on experience during a 100-hour practicum in a hospital unit.

Pharmacy Technician Certificate

This program is of interest to students who would like a formal training period, followed by interesting and varied job opportunities in the pharmacy field. Graduates work in community pharmacies and hospitals under a Pharmacist’s supervision. Some of the duties may include assisting in dispensing medication, inventory control, third party billing and pre-packing and compounding pharmaceuticals.

Balancing the books is essential for the success of any business. Become an integral part of that success by learning the most popular accounting software used by small and medium-sized businesses. This 66-hour program will give you the skills you need to maintain computerized general ledgers, accounts payable/receivable, and payroll records. You will also gain fundamental spreadsheet skills that enable you to create budgets, projections, financial statements, client databases, and more.

To enrol, you should have some previous experience or course work in manual bookkeeping systems, basic keyboarding skills, and a fundamental understanding of computers.

Staffing Services Clerk Certificate

Learn how to manage staffing in hospitals and community health environments. You will learn a basic understanding of collective agreements, healthcare-industry standards, staffing services procedures, work-place relations skills, and hands-on computer training. Course topics include computers in the workplace, workplace relations, workplace skills, environments for scheduling personnel, and a 100-hour practicum.

Second Language Certificate

Are you interested in learning about other cultures, travelling overseas and helping others gain access to new employment and learning opportunities? This program will provide you with the skills you need to work as an ESL teacher of adult learners here in Canada or overseas.

The 140-hour TESL certificate is comprised of six core courses and the choice of a supervised practicum or a project. The program is comprehensive in education theory and methodology and provides

a hands-on approach to learning various second-language-teaching strategies. It also offers training in language principles and patterns, and addresses the application of this knowledge to the teaching of language skills, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Admissions Information

Early application for all programs is strongly advised. Notice of program closures will be posted on the Okanagan College website. Okanagan College may cease to accept applications for a given intake or program if the number of applications submitted greatly exceeds enrolment capacity. Okanagan College is a multi-campus institution, and many programs are offered at more than one campus. However, not all programs are offered at all campuses.

How to Apply

Use the online application form at www.okanagan.bc.ca/apply. If you are unable to submit an application online, Okanagan College will accept paper applications.

While online submission of your

application greatly speeds the processing of the application, how you submit your application is not a factor in determining your admissibility.

You may visit any of the campuses or regional centres of Okanagan College to submit your application. Assistance is available to help you use the online application process. You may apply to one or more programs in any given semester or program term. If you are admitted to more than one program, you will be required to accept only one offer of admission unless schedules do not overlap.

When to Apply

• You may apply online starting at various times during the year for Continuing Studies certificate programs.

• Most programs accept applications up to the program start. Some programs have multiple start dates throughout the year. • All applicants are urged to apply as early
