(5)

Mercury signifies intellect

Mercury which is the planet of information and exchange.

Mercury= Atharva Veda. (Incantations, formulae to appease negative forces and gain mundane favors, ayurvedic healing).

Mercury- Maternal uncles, aunts and all maternal relatives

Mercury: Buddha - speech, learning, memory, credits, honors, friends, business, adeptness, mathematics: Karaka of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 10th and 11th houses and owner of the North direction. Mercury's natural tendency is to act according to its associations

Mercury gets influenced too easily; it thus behaves as a benefic under benefic influence and as a malefic under malefic influence.

Mercury, the master of ambivalence is considered to be entirely neutral. It is a hermaphroditic and an adaptable planet. It possesses no inherent sect. Mercury changes its sect orientation depending upon the direction oriental to that of the Sun (which means that it is positioned so that it rises before the Sun rises and sets before the Sun sets). It is diurnal in sect or is occidental when it rises after the Sun rises and it is of nocturnal sect when sets after the Sun sets.

Mercury – Sun and Venus are friends, Moon and Mars are enemies, Jupiter and Saturn are neutral Mercury/Budha = The crown prince. Mercury is always playful by nature, even while doing serious things, has the intellectual brain required for success in the material and also to discriminate between the right and wrong. Mercury likes marketing, business deals and takes pride in being correct. Mercury is the natural significator of Intelligence or ‘Buddhi’ and ‘maternal uncle.

Mercury/Budha = Represents the speech-giver, is important with regard to all worldly affairs, mental communication required for negotiation and fulfillment.

Mercury represents speech, and the influences on Mercury will reveal the particular way one speaks. An influence from Budha (Mercury) will make the person talkative.

Mercury governs smell (nose)

Mercury: Education, Level of Intelligence, Mathematics, Accountancy, PR, Communication Engineering, etc.

Mercury is the planet of skills and signifies the ability to use Language in communication. Strong Mercury shows good communication skills. On one hand, where Jupiter signifies knowledge and wisdom, Mercury signify formal education, i.e., application of intelligence in solving practical problems. This also signifies the learning ability as Mercury represents a child who can be trained in various things. All depends on who is training the child; the child will learn the things indicated by the teacher. If Jupiter is teaching him, no doubt the native becomes knowledgeable and if Moon is the teacher, he becomes passionate, concurring with the trait of Moon. Who is teaching Merc, is learnt from which planet is placed in the trine to it.

Mercury is powerful both in day and night.

Mercury :—He is strong when he rises after his eclipse, in Dhanus, both by day and night, during his retrograde motion, and in the middle of a Rasi. He is weak at the end of a Sign and of moderate strength at its commencement.

Mercury/Budha is a benefic because he provides the capacity to understand the areas he affects in a clear, impartial manner; thus allowing balanced behavior and the ability to discriminate. It being a mutable planet, takes on the nature of the planets he associates with. Associated with a malefic,

(6)

mercury becomes malefic in nature. This shows mercury to be of impartial nature who favors the views and desires of the malefic. Rahu/Ketu, being of shadow nature is not able to influence mercury enough to turn it into a malefic. The nodes themselves tend to take on the nature of other planet it associates with.

Mercury Positive

Mercury in exaltation, in its own or friendly sign; or in an angle, triangle or the XI house tends to show good results. A powerful Mercury will show exceedingly good results if it has the aspect of a beneficial planet; is placed in the IX house; or, is the owner of the X house. The individual will keep good health and earn very well. He will be successful and highly prosperous. He will gain from writing, publishing, friends, brokerage, trade or travelling. His will be a happy family. He, his wife and children will do well in life. The family will keep good health. He will become learned and well known. He will have good and favourable contacts with the government. His conduct will be worth emulating. He will be virtuous.

Negative

When Mercury is associated with or under aspect of a malefic planet, the individual will face opposition from the government. He will find it difficult to maintain his mental equilibrium and physical well being. There will be enmity with his relatives. He may go abroad. He will depend on others. He will have to face opposition. He may have to suffer from urinary trouble. When Mercury is placed in a house of the Adverse Trio the individual will suffer losses, and will not lead a

comfortable life. There will be rheumatic trouble. He will suffer from jaundice. There will be danger from the government, thieves and fire. He will lose his property. He will sign documents without due thought and care and will face the consequences of such an act. The individual will have mental tension and nervous trouble. He will be unsuccessful in his endeavours and suffer losses. He may have to travel a lot without much benefit. There may be enmity with businessmen.

If Mercury is unfavourable, the native suiters from the ire of God Vishnu, and the anger of the heir-apparent, abusive language and troubles from thieves. If favourable, there will be acquisition of horses, gold and lands, friends increase, wealth is acquired through the help of Brahmins and good advisers, sculptural skill and arbitration work. There will be increase of fame, performance of righteous deeds, earning by writing and figures and winning of the grace of God Vishnu.

Mercury – Gemini and Virgo are own houses. Virgo is exalted house. 15th degree of Virgo is deep exaltation. Pisces is debilitated house. 15th degree of Pisces is deep debilitation. Moolatrikona Virgo 16 to 20 degrees.

Mercury : Mercury signifies on one hand earth element as well as it signifies ether because of its subtle nature. This is the reason why both the own signs are dual sign types- Gemini and Virgo. Virgo is also the exalted sign for Mercury as mentioned earlier. The degree of exaltation is 15 degrees. Virgo is dual sign type with earth element. Mercury is the great messenger of the cosmos. He is the planet which represents speech, communication and commerce on all levels. Mercury in Virgo creates the perfect balance between duality and its ethereal qualities and the practicality or solidity of the earth element. Mercury represents intellect, analysis, transaction and exchange. Exalted mercury establishes our values in life. Material values, prices, standards of measurement and comparison, artistic values as well as spiritual values. Exalted Mercury in Virgo gives great healing power which the person uses to heal and serve mankind.

(7)

Mercury is debilitated in Pisces which is also dual sign with water element. This water element completely dilutes the analytical intellect of Mercury in a whirlpool of misplaced emotions and impractical ideas. People with debilitated Mercury are not exactly fools but are confused. They are enthusiastic but not always wisely so. Debilitated Mercury can make a person lack in boundaries. They are moved by sentiments which are not genuine and when frustrated can suffer from self pity. They can be amorphous, hard to pin down and often appear in whatever way is necessary to please or placate others or they make commitments without any intention of fulfilling them. They just respond to the influence of the moment.

The natives born with debilitated Mercury will be dependent, serving others, dexterous, peevish, indolent, petty minded and serving others.

During the sub-period of debilitated Mercury one is confused, sensitive, slow in decision making and one suffers from lack of confidence and nervous pressures. The peace of mind is disturbed. One becomes vulnerable to convulsions, paralysis and skin diseases if the debilitated Mercury is under the influence of Rahu, especially from the malefic houses.

Mercury when retrograde would effect 4 houses.

A retrograde Mercury usually signifies changes with speech abilities, communication skills and decision making abilities. People with a retrograde Mercury are generally observed to be very introvert or very extrovert which means that they may have a habit of speaking and expressing themselves a lot or they may not express themselves at all. They may also become unpredictable at times due to the effect of retrograde Mercury in their horoscope, as they may not be able to decide what to do and what not to do till the final moment and may make a decision in a state of confusion which makes them look unpredictable. Such people are also seen making some sudden decisions which may surprise other people. So be ready to accept some unpredictable decisions when someone with a retrograde Mercury is around. Apart from these changes, a retrograde Mercury usually shows positive or negative results as decided by the other factors in a horoscope. Mercury is retrograde three times in a year.

Mercury is said to be combust when it comes within 14 degrees on either side of the Sun provided Mercury is in forward Motion. When Mercury is in Retrograde motion, the degree of closeness for combustion of Mercury becomes 12 degrees.

Mercury Combust; When Mercury is combust the individual experiences feelings of vulnerability when making requests. The self is identified with the function of speech and feels hurt and rejected when his requests are slighted or denied. The ego is fearful of having its request denied and therefore feeling rejected on a personal level. Even legitimate requests such as asking for a well-deserved raise, requesting from loved ones and returning an item to a store become difficult. After some time the individual feels taken advantage of and unfulfilled at which time anger and

resentment set in. The individual must recognize that they must take direct responsibility for getting their needs and desires met by communicating them clearly and strongly. They are generally only able to communicate their desires and needs more overtly through hints, or in a joking manner. Combust Mercury presents the most trouble in personal relationships where a clear communication of needs and desires is important for maintaining harmony and in business affairs where money must be asked for. In essence, when Mercury is combust the native is angry because they are unable to maintain a fair exchange with others. Generally the issues revolving around a combust Mercury develop in this lifetime when the native, as a child, felt rejected when making requests for things from the father, and the father answering something like this, “What do you want that for, it’s stupid, a waste of money, etc.”

(8)

The combustion of Mercury implies sharpness of speech towards others, due to a hurt ego in the past. The lordship and placement of Mercury would in such a case show in which matters and through which people this nature would arise.

If Mercury is negative and combust in a horoscope, the best way to strengthen Mercury for that horoscope, so that it may produce proper results regarding its significances is to chant the Beej Mantra of Mercury for as many times a day as is prescribed by your astrologer and for as long a duration of time as is prescribed by your astrologer.

Quotes from Jaimini Sutras:

1. Mercury in Swamsa gives business acumen and produces a skilled trader or a weaver, sculptor or one well versed in social and legal norms.

2. Mercury instead (of Jupiter or Venus in the 1st/ 5th houses) also indicates an author, but with even lesser capability. The number of natural benefics in the Swamsa or 5th house will determine the capabilities of the author. The presence of the Moon (Mind) is the primary factor Jupiter, Venus & Mercury give writing abilities, but in a decreasing order.

3. ‘Mimamsa’ is one of the six systems of Indian Philosophy. Mercury in the 1st/5th from the swamsa indicates a mimamsaka or involvement in interpretation of text/available literature etc.

MERCURY:

Mercury is attired in yellow apparels and wears a garland of yellow flowers. The radiance and glow of his body is like that of an oleander flower. He has a sword, a shield a mace in each of his three hands respectively and his fourth hand is raised in the posture of giving blessings. He has a golden crown on his head and a beautiful garland in his neck. His vehicle is a lion.

According to the ‘ Atharavaveda ' Mercury's father is the moon and his mother is Tara . He was given the name mercury by lord Brahma because of his intelligence. According to Shrimad bhagawat he is proficient in all the scriptures and is as radiant as the moon.

According to the Shrimadbhagawat (5/22-13) mercury is situated about 2,00,000 yojans (2400 000 km above venus). Mercury is considered to be an auspicious planet but if by chance it transgresses, chance of natural calamities like draught storm and floods occur.

According to the Matsyapuran the complexion of mercury is yellow like an oleander flower. His chariot is of white colour and illuminated by light, Horses, which are as fast as the wind, pull the chariot. The names of the horses are Shweta, Pisanga, Saranga, Neel, Peeta, Vilohita, Krishna , Hairta, Prisha and Prishni.

The governing deity of the planet mercury is Lord Vishnu . Mercury is the lord of the zodiac Gemini, and Virgo. The great phase of mercury lasts for 17 years . The mercury is considered as a high planet, till the fifteenth degree, in the zodiac of Virgo.

For the pacification of this planet fasts should be observed on every Amavasya (moonless night) and emerald should be worn on the body.

Donations of ivory, green-clothes, Coral emerald, gold camphor, weapon, fruit and ghee to the brahmins also satisfies the mercury.

Mythology: In both the Greek and Indian myths Mercury was the illegitimate son. In Indian myth

Mercury was the son of Soma and Tara. Soma abducted Tara from her husband Jupiter, and Mercury was the result. He was so charming later on that Jupiter adopted him as his own. In Greek myth he

(10)

was the result of Jupiter's affair with a nymph (Maia). He later told lies and tricked his half brother Apollo, who was the golden child of Jupiter and Hera (Juno). The implication here lies in deceit, and tricks. This refers to the tricks and delusions our mind can play on us. In relation to androgyny in Indian myth Mercury's wife Ila became a man every other month. In Greek myth Mercury's affair with Venus (Aphrodite) produced a Hermaphrodite, a child with both sexes.

Budha: Jupiter's wife, Tara, was impregnated by the Moon during an affair. After resuming her relationship with her husband Jupiter, a son was born. Tara confirmed that the Moon was the real father. This was again confirmed by Lord Brahma, who made Mercury live close to the Sun. Mercury performed penance to Lord Shiva and was granted the boon of becoming a planet.

Mercury: According to the Linga Purana, Mercury is the son of the Moon by his wife Rohini. Yet in the Vishnu Purana, Brahma Purana, Devi Bhagvata Bhagwat Purana, Harivansha Purana, Padma Purana and Vayu Purana a story is told of the seduction of Brahaspati's (Jupiter's) wife Tara by the Moon - and Buddha is born from her. He is called Saumya, that is, "Son of Soma [Moon]." From Buddha springs the lunar race. The Moon, being his father, is friendly toward him, but Mercury knows that he is son of the wife of Jupiter and so he is in conflict with the Moon, who seduced his mother.

Mythology: Mercury was born out of association of Moon and Tara the wife of Brihaspati, the Deva

Guru. The story is that Moon abducted Tara and took refuse in the Ashram of Shukracharya - the guru of Asuras. After all the gods appealed for the better judgement to Moon he understood his mistake. A remorseful moon returned Tara to Brihaspati. Tara was carrying Moon's child. The child was duly delivered. The child was very beautiful. Tara had disclosed the paternity to Brihaspati who in a Brahmanical forgiving gesture accepted the inevitable.

In Greek Mythology Mercury is considered to be the son of Jupiter and Maia, the daughter of Atlas. He is said to be a friend of Apollo, maybe since it is closest to the Sun.

In Vedic myth Mercury is born of the Moon. One myth recounts how the Moon, overcome with lust,

abducts Tara, the wife of Brihaspati, or Jupiter. Out of their union Budha, or Mercury is born. Thus the intellect is born of the mind. There is a relationship of enmity between the Moon and Mercury that belies a deep truth. The Moon is innocent in its observation, while Mercury is evaluative and discriminating in its observation. There can only be theft when value is implied and this is Mercury's domain. Pure, innocent consciousness was at odds with the commercial, evaluative intellect in ancient India as often as it is today!

Through a rather complicated sequence of events, Budha is the son of Candra and Tara, wife of Brhaspati the guru of the devas. The story runs thus;

One day Tara went on holiday, and in her travels came across Candra. She felt amorously inclined towards him, and he toward her, so they decided to co habit. Brhaspati, on hearing this, requested Candra to give back his wife, but Candra refused, quoting, or mis quoting the kama sastra. The devas became infuriated to hear of this obvious transgression of dharma, and sent their king Indra, who threatened him with war if he did not accede to this reasonable request. Still Candra refused, and war was declared. On hearing this, Sukra, the guru of the demons immediately came and assured the moon that the armies of the demons were at his disposal. Thus alliance was formed between the moon and the asuras. Eventually Brahma heard the unhappy news, and called the two gurus

ordering them to stop their enmity, and demanding that Candra hand back the wife of his guru. However, there was now an additional problem in that Tara had become pregnant, and both Candra and Brhaspati claimed the child. Tara was too ashamed to say anything, and finally Brahma took her to one side, and asked her who was the father. She admitted, very slowly, that the child was indeed

(11)

that of the moon, and when he was born he shone with the moon's lustre and was therefore handed over. Brahma saw that the child was endowed with great intelligence and thus named him Budha. Budha later fell in love with Ila and begot a son who became the famous king Pururavas, from whom were descended the line known as the Lunar Dynasty.

In Mythology, Mercury is known as the Roman god of commerce, eloquence, and science. He is also the messenger to the other gods.

Gods: Greek Hermes is identical with Latin Hermes. The Egyptian Thoth. Spiritual/Mythological shades of Mercury or Budh

Mercury is one of the most significant celestial bodies impacting the mortal bodies at a greater extent and possess some intricate tales like others revolving in the sky.

It also has one more mythological believe attached to it saying that the Mercury being aware of his father Mercury’s deed of seducing his mother, stay discontented and has a conflict with him besides the father being friendly towards the son.

On the other part, Mercury is believed to be the celestial expression of blessings of Goddess Parvati as further elaborating as being ruled by the deity.

Mythological Story or katha of Mercury or Budh

As it has been expressed in the mythological words of Linga Purana, Mercury is the son of the Mercury by his wife Rohini while some other holy writings like Vishnu Purana, Bhagvat, Harivansha Purana, Brahma Purana, padma Purana and Vayu Purana, says that the Mercury is begotten from the adultery and seduction of Jupiter’s wife Tara by Mercury.

Mercury (Budh) - He is slim. He might by having diseases like cough, skin disease. Mercury is linked with nervous system of the body. If the mercury is badly affected in some one horoscope, then he would be having problem in nervous system.

MERCURY- Now we come to your intelligence: Mercury. It represents communication, media, writing ability, speaking ability, ability to do business, and how serious of a person you are, or are you a total comedian, and your lustfulness, wanting to have sex all day, or no sex at all depends on Mercury. It also represents Prince. Prince loves to have fun, and be around women if he’s straight. No one takes prince seriously, but he still has an authority because after all, he’s son of the King (Sun).

Mercury (Budh) - Mercury represents good speech, art, clever, good brains, intelligence, mathematics, truth, and friends.

It represents memory, throat, arms, maternal uncles and short journeys. Its element is bronze and gem is emerald. color is green and direction north.

Budha (Mercury) represents speech. It, also, governs the logical and intellectual side of the mind, the thinking process that precedes speech and ability to communicate, as well as anything related to a language, use of symbols, logic, information processing, and connecting with people or things. The influences on Mercury in the chart will determine the clarity of one's intellect and speech, and the ability to communicate.

(12)

Budha: Mercury represents speech and power of discernment, and reveals the degree of light shining through our intellectual mind, how clearly we can see connections and express our thoughts. A well placed Mercury will produce a radiant mind, and a “happy go lucky” quality in the person. The person can literally shine light on any confusing situation and lighten people's hearts in the process. A Mercury in a challenging position will make the person feel as if cut off from the source of mental light, and easily experience struggles and darkness when trying to understand logic and gain mental clarity. Expressing feelings and articulating thoughts seem to take a lot of effort as if there is too little light to see inside one's own mind.

Budha, Mercury - Think about its light, its movements: Mercury is probably the most difficult to observe because it is never far away from the sun, and its light is often mixed with the one of the sun. When we manage to observe it, however, just before sunrise or just after sunset, we can immediately notice the quickness and the inconstancy of its movements. Within a few days it can appear, disappear and then reappear, moving forward, backward and forward again. Drawing a symbolic link with the qualities of Mercury, we can describe the nature of the mental energy called Budha Graha (or the inner Mercury). Mercury sets in motion. It gives pace and accelerates. It collects, coordinates and transmits. It multiplies what it touches. By analogy, in the mental realm, Budha is sharp and open-minded. He is always full of new ideas. He is ingenious, skillful and fast. He has a good memory, and a good sense of trade, commerce and diplomacy. But he is often nervous and worried.

Mercury – The higher Mercury is the God of discrimination, and the capacity of the mind to be fair and balanced. The lower Mercury can drain our mental energy through over stimulation and trivia, leaving us unable to recognize the important details to focus on and strengthen. Mercury is discrimination, for either good or bad. Proper discrimination implies neutrality; such is the nature of Mercury. This neutrality can lead to a disconnected, ungrounded intellect or one prone to bad influences. His nature is also to play, be curious and experiment, as it is through these activities that we hone our skills and through proper speech and clear communication that we are able to manifest something tangible from them. He governs the detail-oriented nature of the mind. Mercury shows if we will become ensnared in the details or organize them into a paradigm of truth, which leads to our freedom.

MERCURY – (BUDDHA)

Mercury represents the intellect or Buddhi, the capacity for discrimination, communication, language, learning, youth, childhood, plays, sports and friends. Mercury has a constant desire for learning, but it also creates a duality in the mind, always comparing between the pairs of opposites. The Moon represents the subconscious or emotional mind, but Mercury represents the pure analytical and rational mind.

A strong and well-placed Mercury indicates good intelligence and capacity for learning, oral or written communication skills and good speech.

Mercury, when too strong or predominant, can lead to repressing the emotions with reason, and can make for a very critical nature.

A weakly-placed Mercury can lead a person to rely more on emotions and instinct rather than on reason, and it can bring some difficulties in learning, speech, the skin, nervous system, and diminish the capacity to retain knowledge.

Mercury can behave as a benefic or malefic planet depending on its association with other planets. A person can have a good intelligence, but use it on a selfish and destructive way, if afflicted by malefic planets.

Physically it represents the skin and breathing passages, and it has a Vata or airy ayurvedic constitution.

Amongst all the planets Mercury is nearest to Sun. It revolves round the Sun in 88 days. Its diameter is nearly 3,200 miles. Mythologically Mercury was known as Thoth, Hermes and "The Messenger of Gods". It was usually portrayed as a youth, flying with wings at his heels, bearing a cadaceus made of olive wood about which were twined serpents, the rod being surmounted with a pair of wings. This symbol represents the essential qualities of the planet, duality, speed and wisdom. According to

(14)

Hindu mythology Mercury is said to be the son of Moon. Mercurial people generally have a youthful appearance.

The influence of the planet Mercury is neutral, dualistic, cold, moist, sexless and convertible. He gives favourable results when he is in good association and receives benefic aspects. Mercury can rarely be seen with naked eye as he is never more man 28 degrees from the Sun. When he is within 8 ½ degrees of the Sun, he is treated as combust or burnt up and loses great deal of its ability. His influence is best when leaving the Sun. Mercury rules that part of the intellect which is susceptible to cultivation through study, precept, observation and imitation. Mercury influences the nervous system, solar plexus, bowels, arms, mouth, tongue, sense of sight, perception, understanding, interpretation and expression. He deals with travelling, teaching, clerkship, speaking, writing, printing, publishing, literature, stationery, secretaries, book-keeping, correspondence, mailing etc. His day is Wednesday and his metal is liquid metal or quick silver. His colour is green and his gem is Emerald. If Mercury is well placed in the horoscope, the natives make good linguists, orators, writers, reporters, teachers, secretaries, accountants, etc., being fully capable of maintaining any position where adaptability, dexterity, perception, skill, quick wit, imagination and good memory are required. They usually conduct their work in an orderly, methodical, systematic and handy manner being adept at simplifying arrangements. Mercury shows the type of mentality one is endowed with, as he governs the reaction to one's sense and impressions. Being an intellectual planet, the

Mercurian is highly intelligent, ingenious and analytical. He will grasp the subjects very quickly. He gives the native retentive power and reproductive ability. A well placed and well aspected Mercury represents a subtle political brain and intellect, a logician with learning and discretion.

A person influenced by Mercury will have curiosity to master occult sciences also. He will be versatile, good in mathematical calculations, engineering, accounts etc. If Mercury is afflicted, the native will be clever, cunning and mischievous, he will turn out to be a great gambler, the worst liar, a conceited showy person, he will pretend as though he knows everything while actually he is devoid of real learning. The affliction of Mercury will also cause excess nervous activity both of body and mind. There is also consequent effect on the health detrimental to the operation of bowels and other organs under the dominion of this planet. Mercury is the chief governor for education and uncle. Mercury owns Gemini and Virgo. He is exalted in Virgo, the highest exaltation point being 15 degrees of Virgo. He is debilitated in Pisces, the lowest debilitation point being 15 degrees of Pisces. The first 15 degrees of Virgo is the exaltation portion of Virgo, 16 to 20 degrees portion is his Mooltrikona and the rest is Swakshetra. The whole of Gemini is also his Swakshetra. Sun and Venus are friends of Mercury, Moon is his enemy and Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are neutral to him.

MERCURY (Bhudha)

Generally Mercury has to do with all forms of communication. This means speech, writing and publications. It rules the intellect. Mercury was the messenger of the gods. He could travel to the underworld where humans could not go. The underworld is symbolic of the hidden secrets of this world. Mercury can give creative abilities with the hands. Mercury rules learning and education. It is wit and a sense of humor. In Greek mythology Hermes (Mercury) was a trickster and a thief. Mercury is fast and relates to short quick travels. It rules youthfulness and agelessness. He is the perpetual Peter Pan. Mercury is androgynous like a child before puberty. In both Greek and Indian Mythology there is reference to androgyny. Mercury is very impressionable and will take on the qualities of planets aspecting it. Mercury with Saturn will give a serious, disciplined mind, and Mercury with Jupiter gives an optimistic, expansive outlook on life. Mercury with Ketu can give profound

(15)

perception and with Rahu can cause obsessive thoughts. The Moon is not friendly to Mercury and can give an over active mind. Since the Moon rules memory, Mercury with the Moon can give a great memory, but dwells on the past.

Mercury - Budha

Rulership The brow, logic, division, speech, union and separation, cleverness, crafts, ambiguity, adaptability, expression, merchandise, speed, communication, nerves, lungs, thieves, paranoia. Quality This planet rules all communication, whether by speech, writing or lecturing. It is the ruler of thought, the ability to compare two things and therefore, by extension, many things. It is, at its core, a dualistic planet. This should develop into the power of thought.

Childhood Development Mercury rules the period when a child has just been born. While aware of

separate existence, he or she is still closely connected to the mother. The arising of a sense of difference between child and mother is the basis for the concept of division and the source of logical thought.

In People Mercurial people are clever, good communicators, skilled in crafts and language, enjoying ambiguity and tricks. If Mercury is afflicted, the person may be unsure as to whether the world is real and she or he is real. Given this mechanism, feelings may be projected onto the world. This type of narcissism, together with the overemphasis on calculation may lead to paranoia.

Psychopathic Character Doesn't connect with own feelings, views others as elements to be

manipulated. Apparent lack of feeling. "Far away" look in eyes. Many oral tendencies (see below). Very paranoid.

Gauquelin Keywords None. As with Pluto, no results were found for the rise and culmination of Mercury at birth.

Mercury – It owns the zodiac signs of Gemini and Virgo. Mercury signifies speech and communication, skills, intellect, dexterity, equanimity, neutrality, curiosity, playfulness, and education. Both Jupiter and Mercury represent human intelligence or DHI SHAKTI. Mercury

indicates an immature side of intelligence as compared to the more mature one of Jupiter.

Mercury - Heart, Lungs, Skin & Lower abdomen: Mercury is the indicator of life as it allows air to get into the lungs after birth of a baby. Mercury stimulates the nervous system as soon as the baby comes out of womb and sends impulse to all the organs of the body to initiate actions which, as a result, causes a tremendous thrill into the body that makes the baby cry. Mercury is the only causative as well as the remedial factor of all the diseases.

Mercury has tripartite mode of action into our body which keeps similarity with the organs it influences. Heart muscle has three layers e.g. endocardium, myocardium and pericardium i.e. muscles incorporate from inner to outer periphery of our heart. Similarly in skin anatomy we also find the three layers i.e. outer protein layer, middle fat layer and the inner protein layer. Mercury in its first phase of action, inflows oxygen and eliminates obnoxious gases (e.g. Carbon-dioxide) from our body, in the second phase consolidates the benefits and utilities of oxygen into our body and in the final phase, Mercury helps keeping the normal function of lower abdomen for the absorption of food nutrients and elimination of waste products, thus stimulates the immune system to maintain normalcy within the body. To maintain a perfect immune system into our body, Mercury acts as a balancing factor which firstly controls inflow of oxygen into the body and secondly as a result, bile secretion remain in optimum level and finally keeps secretion of phlegm normal to facilitate

respiratory system. Mercury has direct impact on the grey-matter and CNS (central nervous system) of our head. Mercury controls our heart and lungs i.e. the entire respiratory system,

lower-abdomen, skin and the nervous system of our body. Mercury is responsible for the basic cause of skin disease. Besides skin, Mercury has direct control over the maturation and action of white blood cells or leucocytes in our body. Mercury, while in affliction may cause imbalance in the production of leucocytes (white blood cell) which as a result may cause leucoderma (white disease) in the skin and

(21)

even may cause leukemia (abnormal high count of leucocytes) which is commonly known as blood cancer.

Mercury - A Study in Light of Vedic Mantra

Background:Mercury is very interesting and important planet. Sun is considered the spirit, Moon is the mind, Mars is the strength and Mercury is the speech of Kalapurusha in Vedic astrology.
