Sexual Abuse of Minors and Diocesan Policy - 1-888-357-5330 Dear Parishioners,
In 1854 at the age of 49, Bishop Francis Gartland, the first Bishop of Savannah, died of Yellow Fever after visiting and minis- tering to victims of the epidemic and then contracting it himself. His selfless and untiring service, and his willingness to lay down his life for his flock, set the foundation stones for the mission and service of the great Diocese of Savannah. Down through the years of our nearly 170 years as a diocese, there have been numerous members of the flock who have stepped up and made sacrifices for the good of our diocese, our parishes, and our communities. During Bishop Boland’s tenure, he insti- tuted the annual Gartland Awards, which is a way that each parish and mission in our diocese is able to recognize individuals who have exhibited exemplary dedication, service, and stewardship, on the parish or diocesan level. It is the highest and most prestigious award that our diocese bestows and is given annually by our bishop to two lay individuals from each parish at a special Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist at this time of year. I am happy to announce that this year’s recipients of the Gartland Award for St. Joseph’s are Debbie McMahon and Raymond Harris. We are very thankful for all the work, dedica- tion, contributions, and sacrifices that Debbie and Raymond have made for our church through the years, and they will be recognized on December 5, 2020, at the Cathedral. We are blessed to have them as a part of our parish.
Congratulations Debbie and Raymond!
It is hard to believe, but in just two weeks, we will begin Advent and start the new Liturgical Year. That first Wednesday of Advent, December 2nd at 7:00 pm, we will be having an evening reflection retreat, which will be given by the Missionary Servant Sisters of the Most Blessed Trinity from Warner Robins. Sister Nancy and Sister Terry will be reflecting upon: "Is Jesus with us in the Boat?” It will be a reflection that deals with our time of the pandemic and uncertainty, and our faith response in these circumstances. This event will take the place of Dinner & Doctrine for that week and we hope to live stream it as well. Please make plans to attend if you are able.
I pray that you have a peaceful and blessed week!
God bless you.

Third Thursday Organ Interludes Resume THIS WEEK!
We are delighted to be able to open our 2020-2021 season at 12:00 Noon this Thursday, November 19th, with Dr. Paul Thornock Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Savannah. A renowned organist, Dr. Thornock has performed all over the US and has been heard as both an organist and as a conductor on the nationally syndicated radio programs “Pipe Dreams and “With Heart and Voice.” In addition to concerts in the US, he was also invited in 2017 (and had been preparing for two years) to play a concert in March of this year on the magnificent organ in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, a concert which unfortunately was put on hold last year due to the tragic fire in Notre Dame. For more information about Dr. Thornock, please see https://savannahcathedral.org/director-of-music/.
Please mark this date on your calendar and plan now to come and bring a friend! These 30-minute concerts all begin at 12:Noon and are FREE. For further information, contact Nelda Chapman at (478) 745-1631 ext. 120 or [email protected].
Masks and social distancing will be required of all guests at all concerts until further notice.

Can Catholics Gamble?
The Bible says that Jesus condemned gambling, but I notice that so many parishes have them at festivals and other events. What’s correct?
Although Jesus speaks of our relationship with material wealth and the very human struggle with greed, the gospels do not include any specific instructions related to gambling.
At the same time, the Church is very sensitive to the needs of those who might struggle with an addiction to gambling, and pastoral care should always be offered to those who struggle with this reality in their life.
While it is true that many parish or school communities in- clude gambling or games of chance in festivals and fundrais- ers (e.g. bingo, roulette, ring tossing, dunking booths, etc.), there is nothing inherently wrong with these sorts of events, given they are played fairly and within the limits of reason are not morally objectionable. As the Catechism of the Cath- olic Church reminds us: “Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others” (no. 2413).
As in all things, moderation and a sense of healthy limits should be applied to gambling and games of chance. For those who find themselves living with addiction to gambling, help is available in various 12-step and addiction recovery programs.
