Program Name: EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES IN AGRICULTURAL, FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES (EAFCS) Duration: Four Week: June 10 – June 29, 2012

Description: This program is designed to provide students with a greater awareness of the exiting, challenging, and rewarding career opportunities that exists with a degree in agricultural and environmental sciences or family and consumer sciences. Participants spend the three weeks being orientated to the career paths offered by each of the seven instructional programs in the college. This program’s objectives are to initiate great career opportunities for the students and increase the number of students declaring an interest in the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences.

Criteria: Students completing the 11th grade spring 2012-minimum GPA 2.5; Spring 2012 graduating seniors-ACT (SAT

equivalent) composite score of 20 and above, or High School GPA of 2.5 or greater, or rank in the top 50% of high school graduating class AND require no more than ONE remedial course; currently enrolled students must be in good standing with the university and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. All-applicants must be interested in agricultural sciences, consumer sciences, business or science.

Cost: There is no cost to the student.

Program Name: COOK LIKE A CHEF AT S.U. FAMILY and CONSUMER SCIENCES SUMMER CAMP Duration: Four Week: June 4-July 6, 2012 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Description: This program is designed to provide students and their parents learning experiences that will enhance their knowledge, awareness and attitudes regarding the benefits of healthy cooking, eating and physical activity. The camp includes Monday-Friday daily sessions for students and weekly sessions for parents. The camp consists of classes that focus on basic food preparation techniques, nutrition education and factors that influence eating behavior; a variety of physical activities; cooking demonstrations by local chefs; and field trips. The program’s objective is to evaluate the impact of the summer camp on promoting healthy eating and physical activity lifestyles among families; thus, reducing childhood obesity in the Southern University community.

Criteria: Students completing the 4th -8th grades spring 2012. One parent or guardian of the student attending the camp must attend the weekly Parents’ Night, one-hour class. LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE.

Description: School of Architecture Summer Enrichment Institute (SASEI) seeks to engage high school students (who aspire to become architects) in four weeks of exciting and challenging activities that introduce the

participants to the profession of architecture. Participants explore a variety of creative activities that allow them to begin “Thinking Beyond Their Experience.”

Criteria: Students promoted to grades 9 through 12 with a cumulative grade point average of at least

a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale are eligible. They must submit a registration form and on a separate sheet of paper type an essay in which they tell why they are interested in the study of architecture, briefly describe their extracurricular activities/interest, and tell us how they will contribute to society and mankind through the practice of architecture.

Program Name: Developing Educational Skills for Kids (D.E.S.K.) Academy Summer Camp

Description: Developing Educational Skills for Kids (D.E.S.K) Academy is offering an 8 week program that enhances cognitive, social, character, and physical skills in developing the total child. The curriculum includes the use of critical thinking skills with mathematics, reading (ELA), and science in a hands-on, interactive, cooperative learning environment focusing on the cognitive skills. Curriculum will be infused with Social Studies. As a bonus, we will offer a conflict resolution component which will help the children to effectively work through day-to-day situations.

Pre-evaluations will be done to assess each child’s starting level and post-evaluations will be done to show improvements. This program addresses remediation and enrichment skills. The expected outcome is to ensure readiness for the current school year including leap preparedness for those 3rd and 4th grade students. The program is enhanced with the inclusion of both a highly qualified and certified teaching staff and administration that includes college professors with years of experience. We will be working in conjunction with Southern University’s Master of Public Administration Association (SUMPAA) and other Southern University Associations and/or departments.

Criteria: Participants must be entering K – 5th grade in the fall. Remediation, on level, and above level students are all welcome to participate in the program. A copy of final grades and standardized test (if given), are required to be submitted with registration packets. All students must have a recent physical from their doctor clearing them to engage in sports and other types of physical activities. Parents must also include any and all allergies as it relates to food, or anything else.

Other Notes: D.E.S.K. Academy Summer Camp is located on the campus of Southern University in Higgins Hall. Dr. Leslie T. Grover, associate professor, Southern University Department of Public Administration, is the lead professor for camp development and program information. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at the Southern University Laboratory School. Snacks will be provided by the camp. Each participant will be provided a t-shirts. Additional shirts may be purchased for a nominal fee. The program will not operate Monday, May 28th in observance of Memorial Day or Wednesday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day. Parents will be notified when/if to send the children with swimsuits and towels, etc. Parents will receive prior notice of activities. Transportation will not be provided to and from the camp. Program Name: ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (EMBHSSC) Duration: July 8 – 20, 2012

Description: The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (EMBHSSC) is organized to provide activities, experiments,

projects, and field experiences for students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the fall of 2012. The camp promotes science,

technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and supports historically underserved and underrepresented students with limited opportunities. EMBHSSC is a two-week, academic, residential camp that emphasizes increasing students’ mathematics and science knowledge and skills while introducing them to college life and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. The camp will be held on the campus of Southern University Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70813. Students will be housed in a dorm on the university’s campus. Camp

participants will be selected from the Greater Baton Rouge area and surrounding parishes. Students attending school

out of Louisiana are not eligible.

Criteria: Students currently in grade 5, 6, or 7 who have an interest in science and mathematics, at least a B average in science and mathematics courses and a passing score on the state’s standardized science and mathematics test are eligible to apply.

Cost: Students attend the camp free of charge.

Description: The Southern University College of Business presents the “Garrett A. Morgan/Ford PAS Summer Business Institute – 2012 to 4th-8th grade students. The Summer Institute explores academic and practical issues related to business and transportation. The students will participate in many economics sessions in the College of Business. Math skills and practice sessions involving test taking (Leap-Iowa) will be an intricate part of the summer programs.

Students will explore FUNdamental field trips every Friday and participate in many fun physical activities. The program will focus on Survey of Accounting, and Personal Finance, Management, Marketing, Basic Economics, Entrepreneurship, Computer Skills, Review of Math and Communication Skills, in addition to healthy sports and recreational activities. The Garrett A. Morgan/Ford PAS Summer Business Institute primary focus is to provide a quality program for all participants; therefore, a zero tolerance discipline policy has been adopted.

Criteria: Available for students 4th through 8th grade, with a GPA of 2.2 and above. Acceptance into Garrett A. Morgan/Ford PAS Summer Business Institute is on a first-come-first serve basis. The Garrett A. Morgan/Ford PAS Summer Business Institute primary focus is to provide a quality program for all participants; therefore, a zero tolerance discipline policy has been adopted. PROGRAM: Sankofa Academy Program for Middle School and High School Students

Orientation: Mandatory parent and student orientation will be held Sunday, June 3, 2012, at 3:00 p.m.in Room 102 Lee Hall.

Duration: This is a six-week summer program. It starts Monday, June 4, 2012, and ends Friday, July 13, 2012.

Program Time: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Students may be dropped off at 7:15 a.m.; they should be picked up by 5:45 p.m.)

Description: The Sankofa Academy is an academic empowerment program designed to enhance students’ critical thinking skills, mathematics skills, English skills, and reading comprehension skills. The courses prepare students for future high school or college studies.

Criteria: The enrollment for the Sankofa Academy’s commuter program at SUBR is one hundred (100) students.

Participants must be entering the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade. Judgment and character are among the criteria for participating. Each student must have an acceptable school disciplinary record and must attach a recent ACT, PSAT, or SAT score to the application. If students do not take the ACT assessment by April 14, 2012, they will still have time to take the June 9, 2012, ACT assessment.

Cost: The non-refundable enrollment fee is $700. This fee does not include meals or snacks. Students are expected to bring a

bag lunch or to go to the University cafeteria. The cost for lunch in the cafeteria is $6.50 per day. We do not offer

scholarships; we do not offer a reduction in the enrollment fee for multiple siblings. We do not adjust the enrollment fee for absences. We do not give refunds if the student is dismissed for reasons such as inappropriate behavior, poor health, sickness, vacation, etc.

Criteria: Participants must be entering K – 5th grade in the fall. Students selected to participate must have at been successfully promoted to their next grade level and must demonstrate exemplary behavior.

Summer Bridge Institute (SBI) at the Timbuktu Academy

Orientation: Friday, June 1, 2012 (Mandatory for student participation.)

Dates for Summer 2012: June 1, 2012 – July 27, 2012

Description: SBI is an early college enrollment and research program aimed at recruiting top high school graduates at Southern University and A&M College. Priority is given to those majoring in one of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines (i.e., physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, or architecture). A minimum of 7-8 hours of college course hours, depending on research schedule, is required. Participation in a weekly research and enhancement seminar is required. The internalization of the locus of control is one of the aims of SBI. Study hall for three (3) hours per day, Monday to Friday, is also mandatory. SBI is funded in part by the Department of Navy, Office of Naval Research (ONR), and others. The enrollment for SBI, per summer, is typically 20 scholars.

Criteria: Successful applicants must earn the high school diploma by June 2012, have a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0, and a

minimum ACT score of 21. Participants must major in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and

mathematics) discipline.

Cost: Tuition and fees, and books will be paid by the Timbuktu Academy and the Louis Stokes Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation (LS-LAMP) funding agencies. For the summer of 2012, SBI is a non-residential program.

Description: The Summer Transportation and Energy Institute is a unique concept that is designed to create an awareness of opportunities which exist in the transportation and energy industry and to stimulate an interest in secondary elementary school students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The institute consists of two programs: academic and enhancement. The academic program introduces participants to science issues, global conservation and land, air and water transportation. The

curriculum includes problem-based learning projects, use of critical thinking skills, and hands-on projects. The enhancement program covers time management, study habits, test-taking skills, oral and written communication skills, and computer skills. Weekly fieldtrips are taken to enforce what is learned in the classroom. The participants will be engaged in a four-week intensive math, science, technical writing, and transportation and robotics program.

PROGRAM NAME: THE CLASSIC UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM

Duration: Year-round. Summer Program Begins June 18, 2012 and Ends July 25, 2012. NON-RESIDENTIAL.

Description: Classic Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Classic Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree; and low-income, first-generation military veterans who are preparing to enter postsecondary education. The goal of Classic Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

Classic Upward Bound projects provide academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages. Tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment activities are also provided.

All Upward Bound projects MUST provide instruction in math, laboratory science, composition, literature, and foreign language. Other Services: Instruction in reading, writing, study skills, and other subjects necessary for success in education beyond high school Academic, financial, or personal counseling; Exposure to academic programs and cultural events; Tutorial services; Mentoring

PROGRAM NAME: THE UPWARD BOUND MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE PROGRAM

Duration: Year-round. Summer Program Begins June 11, 2012 and Ends July 13, 2012. RESIDENTIAL

Description: The Upward Bound Mathematics and Science Program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in the STEM disciplines and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in related areas.

Program services include: a summer program with intensive math and science training; year-round counseling and advisement; exposure to university faculty members who do research in mathematics and the sciences; computer training; and participant-conducted scientific research under the guidance of faculty members or graduate students, who are serving as mentors.

Other Services:
