STUDENTS BACK ON CAMPUS

This fall marks another record number of students enrolled for classes. The total headcount is 246 students, including online and Advantage!

participants. Lemmons and Lewis Halls are filled to capacity. Coppock Hall has been used as an over-flow for male students and female students are staying in apartments near campus until Binford House is available.

The increase in student population has meant a lot of excitement on campus. Recent improvements in the campus landscape have been well received and the new parking areas are being utilized. Many students are children of alumni. It is

great to see so many familiar names on campus; like Leininger, Boettcher, Nolan, Coleman, and Davis to name a few.

With more students comes the need for more spaces. Classrooms large enough to teach the number of students registered are at a premium, and the kitchen facilities are nearing capacity. While these are challenges for the administration, they are welcome changes. It is truly a miracle to see how the Lord is blessing and using Barclay to train ministry leaders for his service.

Please keep the students, faculty and staff of Barclay College in your prayers throughout this school year.

DR. NORMAN BRIDGES GOES HOME

After a yearlong battle with cancer, former Barclay College president (then Friends Bible College), Dr. Norman Bridges, passed away Saturday, August 21, 2010. He was 72 years old.

Dr. Bridges served the Lord at Friends Bible College for 9 years, from 1976 to 1985. Following his tenure at FBC he served at Friends University and as president of Bethel College in

Mishawaka, Indiana until his retirement in 2004. After graduat-ing magna cum laude from Bethel with a B.A. in English

Education in 1960, Dr. Bridges went on to earn an M.A. in American Studies (1966) and a Ph.D. in Higher Education (1970) from the University of Michigan.

Bridges was born on April 2, 1938, in Wooster Corners, Mich., the son of the Reverend Guy and Nellie Bridges, and grew up as the oldest of five children in a series of parsonages. The family’s frequent moves depended upon the annual whims of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ/United Missionary Church Michigan Conference Stationing Committee. Bridges ultimately graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1956, where he won academic honors as the top male in his class and conference championships in wrestling and debate. Bridges married Janice Stephey in 1959, while they were still students at Bethel, then taught high school in Indiana and Michigan.

Dr. Bridges played an important role in the lives of many while at Barclay College. His passion for education and the success of Barclay are still seen today in the relationships he developed while president.

He is survived by his wife Janice, three sons, David and Rochelle of Friendswood, Texas, Jona-than and Debbie of Dallas, Texas, and Daniel and Renee of Goshen, Indiana. He had six grandchil-dren. Funeral services for Norman V. Bridges, Ph.D. were held August 25, 2010 on the campus of Bethel College.

FACULTY FOCUS—PAT HALL

Pat Hall’s goal for Worden Memorial Library is simple, “make it what people need.” As the new Library Director, Pat brings experience and a desire to help students and the community get the resources they need.

After graduating from Barclay in 2006, he went on to earn his Master’s of Library Science from Emporia State University and served as the Assistant Library Director of the Pratt Public Library. Pat said of his decision to work for Barclay, “God opened the door and I decided to walk through it.”

Pat wants to make sure the students have all the resources they need for their education. He is currently working with the faculty to ensure the library has the required material for classes. The library is important for the student life beyond the classroom. He believes the library can provide opportunities for, as he calls it, “recreational reading and entertainment.”

Pat is careful to schedule library hours for the convenience of both college students and local patrons. Currently, local residents can sign up for a library card and check out books and materials. During the school year it is open seven days a week for both students and the community. The library also makes available the Kansas Library Catalog which provides access to material available at nearly every library in the state of Kansas.

When asked how God is currently impacting his personal life, Pat replied, “I am just enjoying the blessings He is providing.” He said he is also learning, “how to really have faith, instead of trying to figure it out myself, those things beyond my ability, to let God have control of them.”

Pray for Pat as he endeavors to make the library a place of community and learning at Barclay College.

It is only God that can move someone from physics to counseling, just ask senior Isaac Wheeler. His original collegiate plans were to attend the

University of Arizona to study physics, but then God began to move in him. The summer following his high school graduation the Lord used a friend to show him how his life can make an impact on others.

The son of alumni, Isaac is originally from Scottsdale, Arizona. He was followed to Barclay by his sister, now a sophomore, and his parents, Tony and Stacy Wheeler, who have joined Barclay as faculty members. Isaac is

“definitely” glad he made the decision to attend Barclay.

Majoring in psychology, Isaac wants to “have a Godly impact on people, one on one.” His favorite class is a reflection of that, Living and Practicing The

Blessing, taught by his dad, Dr. Tony Wheeler. Isaac said, “it has really made me more self aware. I see how I need to step out of my shoes and focus on what their needs are.” He said the class will help him in all areas of his life to have, “more authentic and healthy relationships.”

He has truly enjoyed his time at Barclay, especially with his family here. The depth of spirituality at Barclay has had a profound affect on him. He said, “spirituality is important in daily development, people really care if you are in a relationship with God. All the professors are really amazing spiritual leaders.”

Following graduation next spring Isaac plans to pursue a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy. He sees himself focusing on researched based counseling, creating tools so others can help people too. While those may be his plans now, Isaac knows that God can change plans and he want to always be “searching for God’s plan” in his life. Pray for Isaac as he conclude his student career at Barclay.

MEN’S SOCCER PREVIEW

There is a very optimistic feel going into the 2010 season. Head coach, Jeff Carpenter, assistant coach Nathaniel Carlson, and the players are very excited about what this season may hold. The team is looking to improve from last years finish of 3rd in the Midwest Christian College Conference and 4th in the ACCA National Tournament.

Barclay returns eight players with experience from last year. The team is

led by captains Marc Compton (Sr) from Newton, Kansas, Carlos Lopez (Sr) from Yorba Linda, California, and Eliot Hinshaw (Jr) from Haviland, Kansas. Several incoming Freshman look promising and will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact.

This season features five home games. The first one is Saturday, September 4th against Central Christian JV from McPherson, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to come out and support the Bears this fall. It should be exciting.

The 2010 Lady Bears Volleyball season is underway. Practices began on Monday, August 9th with 6 returners (4 starters)

from last season’s ACCA National Championship team along with 5 very talented freshmen. Returning starters include Sr. Tacy Powers (Wilson KS), So. Ashley Colliatie (Wichita KS), So. Adele Wheeler (Haviland KS), and So. Rachel Rightnour (Cibolo, TX). Also return-ing are So. Katie Cruz (San Dimas, CA) and So. Taelyr Shelton

(Eudora, KS). Joining the returners are Freshmen Hannah Williams (Haviland, KS), Sarah Sullivan (San Antonio, TX), Andreia Leininger (Hugoton, KS), Amanda Selby (Coeur d’Alene, ID) and Mercy Lugalia (Wichita, KS).

Head Coach Justin Kendall returns for his second season at the helm and is joined by Assistant Coach LeAnn Carlson. Carlson played last season for the Bears as a setter and helped lead the Bears to their first ACCA National Championship. Carlson brings a great knowledge of the game as well as a very strong work ethic to the Lady Bears coaching staff. Be sure to come out and support the Lady Bears Volleyball team as they host their first home game on Sept. 7th against Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College at 6:30 pm.
