Many users of the new Vista operating system and the new Internet Explorer 7 have been calling citing trouble with their email at home. The symptom:

Email will allow you to read, but when you want to reply you receive a big “X” in the message area and are unable to add text.

You can fix this solution by doing the following:

1. In Outlook Web Access, click on the “options” in the left Task Pane.

2. Under “E-mail Security” Click Install or Upgrade the S/MIME Control. This will download a new add-on. 3. Click “Run” when asked about the Microsoft Outlook

Web Access S/MIME install and security warning. 4. Close and Restart IE7.

More Solutions For Home Computer Users

To open Microsoft Office 2007 files using an older version of Office, you can install an

“Office Compatibility Pack”.

Go to:

http://office.microsoft.com

Search for: “Office Compatibility Pack” (this will be a free download)

Our department will be installing this compatibility pack throughout our district as the need arises.

MAIL

Electronic mail is a very important tool for communication throughout the district. Email is hosted by Paramus Public Schools using Exchange Server 2003. Administrators, teachers, and secretaries all have an email address for this type of communication. The application used to deliver email to the clients is Microsoft Outlook. In addition email users have the ability for remote access using Microsoft Web Outlook. Instructions for both these

applications can be found on our district website under the technology link:

http://www.paramus.k12.nj.us/district/technology/pwd/instruction_outlook.htm In an effort to provide the best in service and conserve space, quotas for email use and delivery have been set. Attachments are limited to a size of 2 MB. A schedule has been set to delete mail items placed in the user’s “deleted items” folder the end of every month. Email is to be used for school purposes only. All users should understand Paramus Public Schools electronic mail accounts are not private. At any time, the Paramus Public Schools reserves the right to read any staff member’s school email.

BARRACUDA TO HANDLE SPAM

SPAM is unsolicited mail sent to a volume of people without consent. Paramus Public Schools uses an appliance called Barracuda to handle SPAM. One way to avoid SPAM, if possible, is to limit posting your email on applications, newsgroups, and web forms. Directions for using the Barracuda appliance if you have the need are found on our website:

Paramus Public Schools hosts their own website and maintains its own web server. Kathleen McCann, technology department manager, oversees the opening page of the website and works with web authors throughout the district contributing to the site. The objective of the district website is to provide up-to-date information to the public. The district website provides information about all schools and programs throughout the district. Each teacher in the district has their own sub web for submitting information about the class/grade they teach. The teacher has the ability to write homework assignments on their sub web as well as provide links to education resources.

Teachers and web authors must follow the guidelines set for web authors. As with all other computer applications use of the web server is to be respected. Users should be sure to keep their sub webs up-to-date, and remove any unused or out-of-date files. The web server is not to be used as a back-up tool for files. Each sub web should not exceed a size of 25 MB. All teachers must read the Administrative Procedures No. 228 for Web Authors. This document can be found on our staff only (password protected) web.
