Purpose & Scope

Experienced Texas Criminal Law practitioners will discuss the nuts and

bolts of how to handle a criminal case from beginning to end. Starting

with general business practices and ending with how to file a notice of

appeal, the afternoon will be divided up into three sessions, all of which

will provide specific information regarding practice tips, substantive law

and trial advocacy pointers. Topics will cover fee contracts, marketing,

jail release, bail reduction, standards for arrest, searches, oral and written

confessions, the exclusionary rule, investigating the case, theory of

the case, plea negotiations, the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional

Conduct, Brady v. Maryland, discovery, pretrial motions, charging

instruments, voir dire, trial practices, the Texas Rules of Evidence, the jury

charge, Texas sentencing scenarios, collateral consequences of conviction,

motions for new trial and notice of appeal.
