dropped from 8,967 to 4,085 of which most were "breach of the peace" and "drunkenness." Imprisonment for "breach of the peace" declined from 2,919 to 1,569 and drunkenness from 3,390 to 854 in the corresponding years.
From 1939 to 1948 there has been a noticeable change in the age composition of Scottish prisoners. In 1939, 23.5 percent of the prisoners were under 30 years of age (5.2 percent under 21 years) whereas in J948 52 percent were under 30 years of age (15.9 percent under 21 years). The prison staffs in 1939 numbered 518 governors, chaplains, medical officers, officers and others and 761 in 1948.
