o other hospital can compare with the experience and talent of our podiatry staff. Many of the attending surgeons at DeKalb Medical are recognized nationally and inter-nationally as the leading surgeons and educators of foot, ankle and leg pathology. John Ruch, D.P.M., has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Podiatry Management

magazine. Alan Banks, D.P.M., was chief editor of McGlamry’s Comprehensive Textbook of Foot and Ankle Surgery. Louis Jimenez, D.P.M., previously served as president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. In addition, the podiatry staff at DeKalb Medical is composed of a number of other surgeons

with extensive training and experience—not only in podiatric medicine and surgery, but education as well. If you want to know what the training experience at DeKalb Medical can do for you, simply look at our graduates. Many have served as full time faculty members at colleges of podiatric medicine or regularly share their knowl-edge through lectures or publications in the United States and abroad.

atients come to DeKalb Medical from all over the country, presenting complex problems and complicated conditions including operative complications and post-traumatic injuries. As a tertiary referral center for podiatric care, the surgeons at DeKalb Medical treat patients that are typically not treated at local area hospitals, offering residents extensive exposure to widely diverse conditions and resulting procedures.

ounded in July 1969, the Podiatry Surgical Residency Training Program at DeKalb Medical was the first three-year training program in the United States and is nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in foot and ankle surgery. Residents receive extensive surgical training and are involved in the assessment and treatment of patients with a great diversity of pathology on a daily basis. At the end of the three years, residents can expect to have completed the requirements for a PMSR with an added RRA credential.

Surgery, DeKalb Medical attracts the best and the brightest

providing a thorough, intensive three-year educational

training experience in podiatric medicine and surgery at

the post-graduate level, DeKalb Medical is committed to

DeKalb Medical’s Podiatry Program attracts students with a passion for gaining

an in-depth experience in podiatric surgery, including post operative

complica-tions, neuromuscular disease, severe deformities of the foot and ankle,

degenera-tive conditions and post traumatic complications.

Externs work closely with podiatric residents, learning the intricacies of hospital

protocol while gaining extensive exposure to foot, ankle and leg treatment,

pro-cedures and surgery. The podiatry staff at DeKalb Medical is recognized

nation-ally and internationnation-ally in patient care and education.

With a focus on providing a firm academic background coupled with clinical

relevance, externs are exposed to a diversity of pathology, lectures and materials

provided by the Podiatry Institute, as well as in-hospital continuing education.

DeKalb Medical’s Podiatry Extern Program:

Accepts up to six externs a month

Includes housing and board with three meals a day

In addition, as a 500+ bed, acute medical/surgical community hospital with an

acute physical medicine rehabilitation unit, DeKalb Medical is:

ounded as a non-profit organization in 1978 by the members of the Podiatry Department of the hospital, the Podiatry Institute is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in foot, ankle and leg surgery. The Institute headquarters, located in the medical office building adjacent to DeKalb Medical, houses one of the largest collections of video, slides and computer images of reconstructive surgery of the foot, ankle and leg. Residents at DeKalb Medical are provided the opportunity to learn teaching and lecturing skills with the assistance of the Podiatry Institute. Furthermore, residents have the opportunity to travel to many of the seminars across the country that are conducted by the Podiatry Institute each year. Cadaver limbs are also made available to residents for anatomic study and in preparation for surgery. Through the Podiatry Institute, residents are able to interact with organization members in the United States and overseas to enhance training, knowledge and life experiences.

I

n addition to highly competitive salaries during residency, DeKalb Medical offers CME allowances in the second and third years and 2 - 3 courses in the hospital per year including plastic surgery and an external fixation courses. The hospital is only minutes away from Emory University, which allows residents to access one of the largest medical libraries in the southeast. Residents develop close relationships with a supportive medical staff, and customized residency specialty studies can be arranged on an individual basis depending upon a resident’s area of interest.
