“Diversity and selected species traits of woody species in forest fragments in and around Kampala Area, Uganda”

Biodiversity is threatened and needs conserving. While protected areas offer us a solution, their effectiveness has been questioned requiring a paradigm shift to forest fragments in anthropogenic landscapes. I re-sampled 22 forests fragments to examine forest structure, species composition and carbon stock changes over two decades. Results demonstrate large changes in forest structure, composition, biomass and that ownership affects the fate of forest fragments. Interestingly, species richness increased in 40% of the forests and that fragments act as habitats for species of high conservation importance. The forest fragments present us with avenues for gains in biodiversity conservation as well as knock-on benefits of reduction in poverty and improved livelihoods. They thus should be taken into account in forest conservation and restoration. The study was supervised by: Assoc. Prof. Richard, J. Telford of the University of Bergen, Norway and Associate Prof. Patrick Mucunguzi, Makerere University. The research was funded by the Norwegian Research Council (MATRIX PROJECT).

MBATUDDE Maria (Ms)

“Predictive Spatial – Temporal Distribution of selected tree species and their Current Genetic Structure in East Africa”

Ms. Mbatudde determined the potential distribution of twenty tree species in East Africa, projected and assessed their future distribution (2050) using Maxent and GARP modeling techniques; determined the genetic structure of three species using PCR amplification and DNA sequencing. Results revealed that Elevation was the most important predictor variable. Climate change (by the year 2050) was projected to affect species potential suitable areas. A unique haplotype in chloroplast DNA of Prunus africana in Budongo and Mabira forests was established. Some output maps had narrow distributions and could extend their occurrence beyond the high concentration areas. However, climate change, changing land use practices, continuous habitat loss and utilization of the tree species pose a great threat to the future survival of the studied tree species. The study recommends conservation of the ecosystems where these tree speciesby all stakeholders. Financial support was obtained from BIOTA East Africa. Supervisors; Assoc. Proffessors; E. Kakudidi, S. Nyakaana, G. Majaliwa and Helmut Dalitz.

NAMUKOBE Jane (Ms)

“Ethnobotanical, phytochemical and antiplasmodial studies of Neoboutonia macrocalyx L”. Ms. Jane investigated the potential of medicinal plants for the treatment of malaria and their development into Phytomedicines/drugs. She found out that many medicinal plants are being used as herbal medicine but they have not been checked for their efficacy, safety and chemical constituents and this limits their wider use and development into medicines/drugs. She specifically examined a medicinal plant species “Neoboutonia macrocalyx” (local names: Ekihora-Rutooro, Omweganza- Luganda), a plant traditionally used malaria treatment in many parts of Uganda and several regions of Africa. She showed that this plant had great potential for treating malaria and even discovered new chemical compounds. The new isolated compounds can serve as potential leads to the development of new anti-malarial drugs. Her research can also aid in the formulation and standardisation of herbal medicines from this plant. The generated information can also be used as tools to spear head the conservation awareness of medicinal plants in and around Kibale national Park where the research was conducted. Supervisors: Prof. B. T. Kiremire (R. I. P.), Assoc. Prof. Robert Byamukama and Prof. John Kasenene. The work was funded by the Belgium Technical cooperation,RISE-AFFNET, Carnegie Corporation of New York and Makerere University, Science Initiative Group and Uganda–France Cooperation project.
