Public transport in Vienna
Vienna has a well-developed public transport network. Buses, trains, trams and underground lines will take you almost anywhere in the city in no time at all. On weekends and public holidays the Vienna underground remains at the service of its passengers all night. All the metro stations in Vienna are marked with a white letter “U” on a blue background:
Tickets and prices
A single ticket is valid for travelling one way in one zone. You most likely will not need to cross the core zone of Vienna city during your stay, unless you decide to go to other towns. You may change to different lines in the course, but you may not interrupt your journey. Single tickets can be purchased at a price of EUR 2.10.
Validated tickets can be used for all public transport in the core zone. Tickets are available at ticket machines at most underground stations or at points of advance sale. Tobacconists also sell tickets. You may also purchase a ticket on board the bus or tram at an increased rate of EUR 2.20 per ticket.
Multiple travel passes
Apart from single tickets there are passes for longer periods of time. Passes are available for 24, 48 and 72 hours. The passes cost as follows:
1. 24h EUR 7.10 2. 48h EUR 12.40 3. 72h EUR 15.40
These passes can be obtained at all the regular ticket sales points indicated above. How to validate your ticket
Tickets, as well as passes (!) must be validated before boarding the train. To validate your ticket stamp the ticket at the blue machines located at the entrance of underground stations as well as on buses and trams. Tickets bought directly from the tram or bus driver are automatically validated and do not need to be stamped again. The fine if caught with no validated ticket is EUR 100.
