aurus, whose corporate headquarters are based in Porto

Alegre, Brazil, was ounded in 1939 and produced its frst

revolver in 1941. Bob Morrison, who had dedicated our-plus

decades to the shooting sports industry, joined the company in 1993

as a rep, then as an employee in 1995 at its Miami, Florida, ofce and

was promoted to President/CEO in 2005.

Think about it. Most other frearms manuacturers are “assemblers” o

guns; Taurus is a “manuacturer” o guns. We manuacture everything

rom the fring pins and magazines, to the carbide-tipped cutting tools

and fxtures, to our own high-speed CNC machines.

All the CNC machines are made by Taurus or the sole purpose o making

frearms—nothing else. As you walk through the Taurus plants, you’ll see

a lot o machines with the Taurus name on them. It’s not just that we own

them—we built them. Here’s the beneft. We can walk down the aisle to

the ofces o our engineers and tell them what the requirements are or

the gun we have on the drawing board or computer screen. We can then

have the CNC machinery built to spec. No one else in our industry has that

luxury internally.

We’re ortunate to have had the same senior vice president in charge

o manuacturing or years—and one o the best—Jorge Velloso.

He knows how to adjust rom frearms manuacturing to machine

manuacturing, to overseeing and executing the design. He’s a creator

like no one I’ve ever worked with. You can produce anything once, but

to be able to mass produce it is something totally dierent.

And we complement each other so well. I’ve been in this industry 44

years—at Colt, Smith & Wesson and others. I know what works and

what doesn’t. The execution o an idea is what counts in getting a

consensus, then making it work. We collaborate so well with our team

in Brazil.

Taurus put aith in me to make this line o frearms really go. I’ve never

looked back since the day they hired me. I met Carlos Murgel (ormer

chairman) and Luis Estima (current chairman and owner o Taurus) in

1972 and we became ast riends, and I became convinced as the years

went by that they really had a vision that I shared and wanted to be

a part o. The company’s success is in large part due to Mr. Estima’s

uninterrupted leadership o Forjas Taurus.

But we now have a management team in place that demands

excellence. It’s been a tough road. But we all understood where

we were and what we needed to do to become one o the premier

frearms manuacturers in the world. For example, I believe we were

the frst frearms company to comply with the rigid ISO standards in

manuacturing.

You can name all the world-class irearms companies, but

everybody has had quality issues at dierent points in time. But at

this point, I don’t think there is a better company that makes a iner

irearm than Taurus. Add it all up: CNC machining, the engineering,

research and development, our ability to make every component.

I irmly believe that. The quest or excellence is everyone’s

responsibility. I’ve never seen this level o cooperation at any other

irearms manuacturing plant.

All components in our MIM operation allow us to make perect part

not have to rely on outside vendors like most frearms manuacturers

do. Then you’re at the mercy o outside vendors regarding quality o the

parts, minimum/maximum standards, etc., and at some given point you

lose quality control. We’re the last integrated gun plant in the world,

and we’re proud o it.

The rumors that persist about MIM parts are simply not true. It isn’t

the traditional way o making parts (milling operations, etc.), so the

process is viewed with suspicion. But it’s all in the process, in the

testing, tensile strength, compatibility o parts with our guns. It’s a

unique and interesting process that we have successully captured.

We have virtually no problem with these parts. It’s an absolutely consistent

process that result

etc., that many manuacturers experience with the milling process where a

part can change based simply on the sharpness o the cutting tool. We can

make the most complicated part that you couldn’t possibly machine.

And the cost savings is almost obscene. I you machined all those parts

the cost it would add to the gun would be astronomical.

I can state unequivocally that using MIM parts has allowed Taurus

to make much better frearms at a more reasonable price. We make

millions o MIM parts a year. I believe we were the originators in this

industry. You’d be amazed at the number o gun parts we make or

custom gunsmiths and parts or other gun companies.

You’d be surprised i I told you some o the companies we supply MIM

parts to. That says a lot about the quality o our operation when you

have competitors placing orders.

Look at the uniqueness o the overmolded Ribber grip. We don’t have

to go to an outside vendor. The same is true or our polymer guns; we

mold a more rigid steel insert into the polymer rame. We do that

Our orging operation is another unique element o Taurus’ frearms

manuacturing acility in Brazil. Forged steel is all about aligning

molecules. The power o orging is the strength in molecular alignment.

And it goes on rom there: All o our metals undergo stringent

metallurgy tests. Forging is the heart o strength and durability when it

comes to errous metals.

And in the actual manuacturing, I like to say we’re

concentricity-ocused; we’re constantly measuring and remeasuring, checking

parts in order to maintain the most consistent and highest level

o manuacturing tolerances. It’s the essence o good gunmaking.

We can make changes in an extraordinarily short period o time,

which is quite unheard o in frearms manuacturing today. No other

manuacturer in the world can do what we do. I we recognize a need

to change a process or design, literally in a three-month period, it’s

done—almost no delay in turnaround time at all—and that gives us a

decided edge, a huge advantage in the marketplace. I see prototypes

quicker than anyone else in the industry. It aords us the ﬂexibility

without going outside and relying on some other company or person.

That’s why our frearms are proven and valid designs.

We come up with unique ideas and refne them; in essence, we’re

producing what people are looking or in a frearm. And it’s not just a

new gun in an old chambering.

We can start with a blank sheet o paper and in nine to 12 months

have a gun in hand to look at. With some manuacturers that takes two

years or better. Every one o our engineers has an intimate knowledge
