2009 Formula SAE Competition

Executive summary

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is an organization that regroups the powerful intellect of nearly 85,000

engineers, technical professionals, academics, and governmental representatives in almost 100 countries. In 1981,

SAE came up with a design competition where students are given the challenge to “design, fabricate, and compete

with small formula-style race cars.” The race cars are judged upon their static inspection and engineering design, their

solo performance trials and their high-performance track endurance. In that first year of competition, Stevens Institute

of Technology imposed itself as a leader by being the first school to win that competition. Today, the largest event for

this competition takes place in Detroit, Michigan with 150 top engineering schools around the world.

Formula SAE students are dedicated to continuing the engineering legacy at Stevens and follow the footsteps of their

predecessors. This year, Stevens SAE team not only intends to “design, fabricate and manufacture” a formula-style

race car but also focus on making an efficient environment friendly vehicle.

Introduction

The team portrays the collective creativity and knowledge of 20 registered SAE members with the guidance of 4

alumni who went through the competition and 2 faculty members who are experienced with the automotive industry.

Presented the opportunity to participate in this competition, the team intends to showcase their ability to work in a

complex engineering environment. This is a student run organization; therefore, students are responsible for

managing, scheduling, fundraising, designing, manufacturing and testing to guarantee a successful project. The

students are challenged to get out of the classrooms and experience a more hands on and practical lesson on solving

immediate and unexpected problems.

Goals and objectives

Finding the thin line between nature and engineering while maintaining simplicity is the essential key for our team’s

design. In order to bring innovation to our design, the team will improve upon previous designs.

The venture of manufacturing a formula style race car and participating in the competition requires an amount of

$25,000 dollars. Therefore, the help of gracious benefactors will be greatly appreciated.

The team will accept all donations whether material, monetary or expert knowledge and assistance. Test Equipments

for data acquisition are welcomed as they are a good way to optimize the performance of the car. Nevertheless, the

team will accept professional advice from any of our sponsors. Companies are encouraged to send professionals to

speak to our team and give us advice concerning the car. The team would also like to invite guest speakers to make a

presentation on developing technologies from their company.

Student and Community Benefits

Above and beyond our private and corporate sponsors, the students and the community will benefit from this

endeavor. The students will learn and understand what it takes to go through an engineering process. Building a car

incorporates the most engineering subjects that might be learned in class going from material choice to simulations,

machine components, designing, and testing. The community will also enjoy the finished product of a formula race

car. The Stevens FSAE team will take part of many community events as it did for the Freshman Week at Stevens’

lawn. This showing of the car is a good way to exhibit the products and services of your company to the Stevens

Community.
