GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

PRELATE’S MESSAGE

DOOR CARDS

SOCIAL QUARTERS

ADMINISTRATOR’S CORNER

Business at the lodge is in full swing with Redskins season here and the many activities the lodge has planned so you can have a great time. Check your calendar and make plans to visit the lodge as often as you can.

Membership is very important to the lodge’s growth. If you know of a qualified person who would like to join the lodge, sign him up. Your recruiting efforts are greatly appreciated.

The Board of Officers would love to see you at the regular lodge meetings and lodge functions.

Have a great beginning of the fall season and HAIL TO THE REDSKINS.

Byron Bailey Governor

Congratulations to Mary Beth Toomey on her recent retirement. Our best wishes go out to Mary Beth for success in all her future endeavors.

We wish the following members and friends a speedy recovery from their recent surgeries: Governor Byron Baily on his foot surgery, Jim Moore on his back surgery, and Trudy Brenner on her recent foot surgery.

On a more sullen note, our condolences go out to the family and friends of Barbara Barnes on the loss of her mother Mary P. Hill who passed away on October 4, 2009. Our thoughts and prayers are with Barb and her family and friends.

As always, feel free to contact me should you hear of a member or a member’s immediate family in need of support from our lodge. This will also allow me to keep the membership informed of illnesses and distress within our Moose family.

Rick Moore, Prelate 703-354-0732 (home) [email protected] Or [email protected]

All members are reminded that they received a door card when they became a member of the lodge. This door card was issued to each member so it could be used for access to the lodge. There have been numerous members not using their cards and buzzing the buzzer for access to the lodge. You are required to use your card for access. If you use the buzzer for access, you will be awarded a “Friendly Reminder Fine” of

$1.00. This fine will be donated to the Mooseheart Endowment Fund.

The Redskins season is here. Make plans to come out to the lodge to watch the games with your fellow Moose family members.

The new video bowling machine has a nice 42" flat screen TV connected to the game. Come out and try the new game and have some fun with your fellow Moose members.

Again, thanks to all of the members who volunteer to make things happen at the lodge. If you would like to volunteer to help us out, just let me or one of the Board of Officers know.

We would love to have your help.

Billy Moriarity

Social Quarters Manager

The District Meeting will be held at our lodge on November 21 at 11:30 a.m. We need a big turnout.st

Thanks to everyone who helped with the road clean up on Cardinal Drive.

As always, there are lots of fun things going on so come on down and enjoy yourself.

Don O’Connor Administrator

MOOSE HEALTH

IS THE SILENT KILLER IN YOUR LIFE?

High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because there are no noticeable warning signs or symptoms until other serious problems arise. Many people with high blood pressure do not know that they have it. High blood pressure is very serious and can lead to heart attack, heart failure, stroke, blindness and/or kidney failure.

Blood pressure is the force of blood against the artery walls. The top number or the blood pressure (systolic) represents the pressure when the heart beats. The bottom number (diastolic) represents the pressure when the heart rests between beats. The following defines normal and high blood pressure in aduts:

! High blood pressure a is a systolic (top number) blood pressure of 140 or higher or a disastolic (bottom number) of 90 or higher

! Normal blood pressure is a systolic blood pressure of less than 120 and a diastolic of less than 80

! Prehypertension (at increased risk of developing high blood pressure) is a systolic blood pressure of 120-139 or a diastolic blood pressure of 80-89

If one number is high and the other number is normal, the person is considered to have high blood pressure. Blood pressure is usually measured on at least two different doctor visits before a diagnosis of high blood pressure is made.

High blood pressure can be prevented or controlled through lifestyle changes and with medications. There are many different types of blood pressure medications and it often takes a combination of drugs to control the blood pressure.

The things that you can do to keep your blood pressure healthy include:

! Maintain a healthy weight

! Be active – engage in moderate physical activities for at least 30 minutes most days of the week

! Maintain a healthy diet – eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and lower or cut out salt or sodium and increase potassium

! Use alcohol moderately

! Prevents and control diabetes

! Stop smoking

If you had your blood pressure taken at the family picnic and were told it was high, please get another blood pressure taken.

See a doctor as soon as possible to prevent any complications from high blood pressure. If you are taking blood pressure medication, continue to do so.

SWINE FLU UPDATE

! The number of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza has increased and now exceeds what is normally expected at this time of the year. In addition, there have been 19 flu-related deaths of children.

! Thirty-seven (37) states are reporting widespread influenza activity at this time. Virginia and Maryland are included in those states. This widespread influenza activity in September and October are very unusual.
