Who’s Using Smartling Contents

The world’s leading businesses use Smartling’s cloud-based software platform to create, manage, and deliver their multilingual content.

More than half of all consumers only buy products and services in their native language.1 But for decades, creating multilingual content to reach these potential customers has been a challenge. It’s taken too long, has been error-prone, and has cost more than it should.

With traditional translation, getting your content produced in other languages is a drawn-out, difficult, and largely manual process.

You don’t have transparency into progress, you may not have transparency into exactly who is creating the translations, and it may be difficult to understand the actual costs. It takes weeks or longer to get your multilingual content in sync with your source content.

These problems are magnified by the demands of today’s agile, multi-platform landscape, in which the pace of content creation is accelerating. Your business demands a better solution.

Smartling’s cloud-based software platform dramatically improves the process of creating, managing, and delivering multilingual content.

Using Smartling, businesses reach new markets more quickly, more accurately, and more cost-effectively than ever before.

The global marketplace is now open for business.

Workflow Management

Workflow management is at the heart of the Smartling platform.

By employing flexible, robust, and customizable workflows, your multilingual content is created and delivered faster, with fewer errors, and without draining resources.

Does your business use different resources for translation into different languages? Does some content require additional review before approval and delivery? Do you have internal or in-country reviewers for certain languages? No problem. Smartling can apply different business rules to each scenario, allowing you to select the resources to be called upon, with automated workflow and notifications. Once a workflow is activated, Smartling guides your content from start to finish, notifying the selected resources when their involvement is required.

The entire translation workflow from authorization to approval is controlled through a secure, personalized dashboard that’s accessible using any web browser. Each user sees only the information and actions relevant to his or her role. Each participant has his or her own account and sees only the information relevant to them.

The centralized nature of the Smartling dashboard also means you’ll have real-time visibility into the status of your projects. Out-of- the-box analytics show how each of your translation providers are performing and how quickly and effectively you’re creating your multilingual content.

Translation Memory

Smartling keeps track of what you’ve translated so you’ll never have to repeat that work again. It gets smarter with each new translation, increasing the percentage of your content that’s likely to be “matched” from translation memory in the future, maximizing translation speed, consistency, and cost savings.

Most translation agencies charge additional fees to manage

translation memory, negating in part its cost-saving effects. Or worse, they don’t offer it at all. Translation memory is included in the price of your Smartling subscription, which typically saves companies an average of 40% (and as much as 80%) on translation costs.

Smartling applies advanced algorithms to detect partial matches from translation memory, maximizing the probability that previous translation work will be reused to the greatest extent possible, further reducing turnaround times and costs.

Smartling unifies your translation memory across all of your projects and expert translation resources, completely eliminating the significant manual effort otherwise required to keep your translation memory in one place and up-to-date. Centralize by department, business unit, or country, or across your entire company.

Your translation memory is your company’s intellectual property, not the property of your translation agencies, nor the property of Smartling. Smartling enables you to instantly export your translation memory in industry-standard, interchangeable formats whenever you wish and at no additional charge.

10 When translators work in Smartling, they see their translations

in context as they’ll appear to your customers. They can make adjustments in real time, removing the guesswork. For you, it eliminates time-consuming and costly back-and-forth, or worse, embarrassing mistakes.

Why does context matter? Most importantly, obtaining the linguistically correct translation depends on knowing the context in which the source text appears. Does the word “home” refer to a house, or to a home page? Without context, the translator cannot be sure. Words often have multiple and completely differing meanings.

The linguistically correct translation differs depending on context.

Incorrect translations resulting from a lack of context can be embarrassing to your business. Only by giving your translation providers access to Smartling’s in-context tools can you minimize errors and eliminate the time and cost associated with correcting them.

Smartling’s visual context also assists translators in creating a translation that accounts for space limitations, mirroring the length of the source content to the greatest extent possible. This is particularly important for websites, web apps, and mobile apps, where space may be at a premium (for example, in menus or buttons). Because they’re able to see exactly how their translations will appear, translators can create a translation that works for the use case.

Glossary and style guide functionality is incorporated into the translation interface, allowing you to specify if and how certain content like product names and slogans should be translated. You can also provide instructions to translators for specific cases. These tools always appear in context, maximizing translation speed and quality.

Reviewers use the same intuitive interface to give feedback on the translations. Because they’re able to see translations in context, instead of in a cumbersome and overwhelming spreadsheet or text file with no visuals, your company can have more confidence in the accuracy of its multilingual content.
