Installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server

Management console with a remote database

Originally posted: March 2002

Affected software versions

BlackBerry™ Enterprise Server version 2.1 for Microsoft Exchange with Service Pack 1

Summary

This document explains how to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console (Microsoft

Management Console [MMC] Snap-in) for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and point to a remote SQL server. This document assumes the same system requirements as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation.

Explanation

After the BlackBerry Enterprise Management console is installed, a directory is created that is named Database. This directory contains five files:

Createdb.exe is used to call the Createdb.sql with the correct parameters. Createdb.sql is used to create the initial BESMgmt database.

Errors.sql is used to add errors to the master sysmessages table.

Stored proc.sql is used to create all the stored procedures in the admin database. Tables.sql is used to create the initial BlackBerry Admin Server tables.

When these files are run on the production SQL server, they create the database that is required for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console can then be pointed to the database using an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) connection that is created on the BlackBerry

Enterprise Server.

Name: Leave this value as BesMgmt, because it was specified in the installation of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console.

Description: Information is not required in this field, but can contain a description of the DSN. Server: This field must specify the SQL server on which you have created the database. 5. Click Next. The second screen of the Create a New Data Source to <driver> window appears.
