Ismael Aquino, RN
Nova Scotia Provincial Director and Atlantic Regional Director (Education), Canadian Red Cross
Ismael has served with the Canadian Red Cross at the Regional and National levels for nearly two
decades. He currently is the Nova Scotia Provincial Director and Atlantic Regional Director (Education)
with the Canadian Red Cross.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Aquino was the National Coordinator, First Aid Services and participated on
projects with the IFRC and ICRC. For more than a decade, he specialized in program management
specifically in the areas of disaster management, community health, and volunteer resources. He
provided leadership during a number of disaster responses with the CRC including the crash of Swissair
111, Kosovo Refugee Relief, 9/11, and Hurricane Juan. He also served on a mission in 2008 to Tsunami-‐
affected Sri Lanka as part of the Organizational Development/Capacity Building evaluation team.

educational and union executive roles. She is a sought after speaker and educator in the area of Strategic
Human Resources. Gail has Bachelor of Nursing and Masters Degree in Public Administration from
Dalhousie University. As well Gail has a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads
University, and is certified as a Coach in the LEADS Health Leadership Capability Framework. Gail has
significant experience with the 360 as a leadership development tool. She is a champion of courageous
conversations.

Krista Connell, BSc, MHSA
CEO, Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation
As CEO for the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation (NSHRF), Krista Connell is responsible for providing the leadership and professional guidance necessary for the NSHRF to attain its mandate of improving the health of Nova Scotians through health research.

She established the ground-‐breaking REAL (Relevant Excellent Accessible Legitimate) Knowledge Program, designed to address the knowledge needs of decision-‐makers within the provincial health system. The program provides approaches to integrating evidence into decision-‐making processes focusing on provincial health research priorities.
Krista serves on external review committees and is a member of various boards and working groups including CIHR’s Institute of Health Services and Policy Research’s Institute Advisory Board and the Canadian Cochrane Network Centre Advisory Board (Chair). Co-‐founder of the National Alliance of Provincial Health Research Organizations, she has served two terms as co-‐chair. Krista has served on a variety of Peer Review Committees, including the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Nova Scotia Research Acceleration Program.
Krista is regularly called upon to speak at national and international events regarding the many benefits of health research, including its role in supporting evidence-‐informed decision making.
Krista holds a Master of Health Services Administration from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from Dalhousie University. She completed the Province of Nova Scotia’s Executive Leadership Development Program. She was awarded a Canadian Progress Club of Halifax Women of
Excellence Award in 2012 and was named one of WXN’s Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award Winners in 2013.
Jennifer Garus PDt Executive Manager, Nova Scotia Dietetic Association (2007-‐present)
Currently, Jennifer is executive manager of the Nova Scotia Dietetic Association (NSDA). Her experience as a dietitian in a variety of practice settings is relevant to her current role in professional
regulation. Jennifer’s role involves participation in a number of collaborative partnerships, including the Alliance of Canadian Dietetic Regulatory Bodies and the Nova Scotia Health Professions Regulatory
Network. She participated on the Partnership for Dietetic Education and Practice working group to develop the Integrated Competencies for Dietetic Education and Practice which will serve as entry-‐to-‐practice standards for the dietetics profession in Canada. Currently, she is working in collaboration with Mount Saint Vincent University to develop a bridging program for internationally educated dietitians who wish to practice in Canada.
During her time with the NSDA, she participated in the legislative process to revise the Dietitians Act and to write regulations, bylaws, policies and practice standards. She sits on the NSDA board of directors as an ex-‐officio director. She has had an opportunity to develop a strong understanding of board governance, and contribute to enhancing governance processes.
Jennifer is also a student at Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) in the Masters of Science in Applied Human Nutrition program. Her thesis study is related to ethical practice issues in health promotion. She graduated from MSVU with a Bachelor of Human Ecology in 1992 and from the Moncton Hospital
Internship Program in 1993.
Mary-‐Ann Hiltz, MHA
Vice-‐President, Strategy & Organizational Performance at the IWK Health Centre
Mary-‐Ann Hiltz is the Vice-‐President, Strategy & Organizational Performance at the IWK Health Centre, where she has held various management positions since 1988. Throughout the course of Mary-‐Ann's career, she has developed extensive Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and Risk Management
knowledge, which, in combination with her Health Information Management background, enable her to lead the Strategy and Organizational Performance portfolio, which provides centre-‐wide resources in support of improving the quality of care and service at the IWK Health Centre.

Mary-‐Ann's leadership role in System Performance Measurement, Quality Improvement, Risk Management, Patient Safety and Decision Support extends both provincially as well as nationally, contributing to a number of provincial and national committees, research projects and task forces. Mary-‐Ann holds a Masters Degree in Health Administration from Dalhousie University and is a certified Health Information Management
Professional.
Sara Kirk, Ph.D. Canada Research Chair in Health Services Research, School of Health and Human Performance
Sara Kirk holds a Canada Research Chair in Health Services Research at Dalhousie University and cross-‐ appointments with the IWK Health Centre, Mount Saint Vincent University and the University of Alberta. Her research uses a socio-‐ecological approach to understand lifestyle factors influencing health status and health services utilization, particularly in relation to excessive weight gain (obesity). Through a multi-‐million dollar program of research she seeks to understand how we can create supportive environments for chronic disease prevention, an approach known as population health intervention research.
Ann McInnis RN, MSN
Corporate Director, Performance & Decision Support, Northwood Group of Companies
Ann has been working in the continuing care sector in a variety of positions during the last thirteen years, currently as Corporate Director, Performance & Decision Support. Northwood, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia is a not for profit, long term care, homecare and community outreach organization providing services for seniors for over 50 years. To meet this commitment Northwood employs 1,500 staff. As an organization, Northwood has established a framework for research in the context of a learning environment. Ann is the Co-‐ Chair of Northwood’s Research Advisory Council, which oversees the development and implementation of research projects within the Northwood group of companies.
Ann graduated from Sydney City Hospital School of Nursing in 1977 and started her career as a registered nurse in the United States. Before returning to Nova Scotia in the early 1990’s Ann completed a BSN degree from Sonoma State University and a MSN from the University of San Diego. She has held both clinical and administrative positions in acute care, continuing care and government.
Mary McNally, MSc, DDS, MA
Associate Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry at Dalhousie University
Mary McNally is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry at Dalhousie University. Dr. McNally has a multidisciplinary education with an undergraduate science degree in Nutrition and a Master of Science in General Pathology. She completed a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1992 and a Master of Arts in Philosophy in
2003.
Her clinical and academic interests include caring for elders, oral health promotion, and health care ethics focusing on social justice and access to care for vulnerable populations. Dr. McNally has been involved in health services and policy research projects focusing on the development of pragmatic solutions and policy recommendations to address inequity and access to oral health care for Nova Scotia seniors. Her research includes careful attention to knowledge translation strategies with the involvement of end-‐users and decision makers as an integral part of the research process.
5 Patricia A. Murray, BA, MSc , MHSA, R Psych, CHE
Special Advisor to the Associate Deputy Minister on Mental Health and Addictions, Department of Health and Wellness
Patricia Murray received her BA degree from Mount Allison University in 1980, a masters degree in Applied Clinical Psychology from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1988, and masters degree in Health Services Administration from Dalhousie University in 2008. She has practiced as a child psychologist and has held various progressive leadership positions throughout her career, including Team Leader of the Central Referral Service for the Mental Health Program at the IWK Health Centre, Health Services Manager and in July 2004 was appointed Director of Ambulatory Services within the Mental Health Program at the IWK. In
January of 2005 she was seconded to the Department of Health to project manage the new $4M autism initiative. In September 2006 she became the Director of Children’s Services with the Department responsible for child and youth mental health, mental health for forensic youth, autism, youth at high risk, and complex care children. She assumed the Acting Executive Director role of the Mental Health, Children’s Services and Addiction Treatment Branch in July 2010. She was appointed Special Advisor to the Associate Deputy Minister on Mental Health and Addictions, in June 2011. In this role her primary responsibility has been to implement the Mental Health and Addictions Strategy for Nova Scotia, Together We Can. She also worked with the Mental Health Commission of Canada as part of the Provincial Territorial Reference Group assisting with the development of the national mental health strategy, Changing Directions, Changing Lives. She is a strong advocate for enhancing services and supports, both formal and informal, for those living with mental illness and problematic substance use.
Janet Simm BSc, MHA (Candidate) CEO Northwood Care Inc.
Janet holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Dalhousie University and is currently enrolled in the
Masters of Health Administration Program also at Dalhousie University. Her experience spans the continuum of health care, including long term care, acute care and community based services. She began career in the Not-‐for-‐Profit sector with the Multiple Sclerosis Society as their Director of Services. She has 13 years of experience with VON in a variety of capacities, including Executive Director for the Hants West Branch, and then for the Colchester East Hants Branch. She also lead the restructuring process for VON in Nova Scotia in 2000. Janet has held various senior roles throughout her career, including the Director of System Delivery and Liaison in the Continuing Care Branch of the Department of Health and Wellness where she led the
Continuing Care Strategic Planning Process, as well as Director of Policy, Planning and Decision Support for Health Association Nova Scotia. In 2011, she joined South Shore Health as the VP Health Services where she was responsible for both Acute and Community Portfolios. In March 2014, Janet accepted the position of CEO Northwood Care Inc. Northwood has a full continuum of services to support individuals wherever they call home, including two long term care facilities, home support, Adult Day Programs specializing in Dementia Care, affordable Independent Living through to Assisted Living apartments, In Touch, Fitness Centre and many other programs and services designed support independent living.
