Annual Report

2000 - 2001

This past year, our first full year on the new Rumeli Feneri Campus, sixty six

percent of all incoming students entered the ELC. Of the 336 students who

began the regular ELC program, by the end of August 2001, only 10 were

unable to meet the criteria for entering the undergraduate program. This

meant that our success rate (97%) was even better than last year, something

we are very proud of. We also were able to recommend 6 students to the

MBA program and 2 students to the EMBA program.

This year saw the number of ELC students more than double, and even

though class sizes were larger than we hoped for, we were still able to retain a

high level of professional instruction. Our department now numbers 23

full-time instructors in the ELC, one full-full-time instructor at the School of Health

Sciences, a full-time secretary and myself.

This year, we were also able to introduce a transition Program for those

students who met the requirements for undergraduate study in January, but

who felt that they still needed to improve their English skills in the ELC while

taking two of their required Freshman courses at the same time. This

program met with a high degree of success in terms of student opinion and its

worth in terms of added English preparation remains to be evaluated. In the

ELC portion of the Transition program, students took part in a debate class

and an academic seminar that developed (besides language skills) critical

thinking skills needed for undergraduate study.

Plans for this coming year include providing more support for the English

Language instruction at the School of Health Science and reviewing the

PEMBA program, with an eye toward ‘housing’ the program at the School of

Health Science for the convenience of the students, and changing the times of

the classes to include night classes during the week.
