A l i b r a r y and documentation system can mark

e f f i c i e n t l y only if it has a good c o l l e c t i o n of

documents on t h e s u b j e c t - f i e l d in which the system is

to provide documentation s e r v i c e . Therefore, a

subs-x a n t i a l part of the successful documentation s e r v i c e

depends on t h e efficiency with which a l i b r a r y

c o l l e c t i o n i s b u i l t . u p .

03 Sources for Documents

In order to build a c o l l e c t i o n of documents on

t h e s u b j e c t - f i e l d of i n t e r e s t of a s p e c i a l i s t l i b r a r y ,

it is necessary t h a t we keep an u p - t o - d a t e record

of t h e various sources of information. Some of t h e s e

sources a r e S p e c i a l i s t p u b l i s h e r s , i n d u s t r i e s , research

o r g a n i s a t i o n s , learned bodies and documentation centres

s p e c i a l i s i n g in t h e subject area of i n t e r e s t , D i r e c t o r s e

of p u b l i s h e r s , t e a c h e r s , students and experts in t h e

s u b j e c t - f i e l d . Thus, a systematic tapping of a l l t h e s e

sources of information would r e q u i r e a well thought out

plan for l o c a t i n g sources of document procurement.

This w i l l ensure a continuous flow of current

infor-mation. As common with any planning e x e r c i s e . Document

Source Plan avoids delay and saves time in document

procurement. Hence t h e need for consciously l o c a t i n g ,

compiling and updating document supply sources. A

Document Source Plan e s s e n t i a l l y involves formulating

a c l e a r c u t o b j e c t i v e for b u i l d i n g up document c o l l e c t

-ion and taking t h e necessary l o g i c a l steps to achieve

such an o b j e c t i v e . In the succeeding s e c t i o n s of

t h i s paper, I s h a l l be discussing some of the

experiences gained while developing t h e Document

Source Plan (=DSP) for Indian Detonators L i b r a r y ,

Hyderabad .
