Subject-rich Classrooms

It has been wonderful to see our fantastic students experience their learning in subject-rich rooms this week, benefitting from being in the faculty areas. This is particularly great news for our Year 7 students who have not yet been able move around the school as they would have done pre-covid.

Mr Smith’s Awesome Fundraising Challenge

This summer, Mr Smith is cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats – the traversal of the whole length of Britain between two extremities; the southwest and northeast.

The route he is taking is 990 miles long and he is aiming to complete the journey in 14 days.

Mr Smith is raising money for Leukaemia and Myeloma research UK, two causes close to his heart.

If you would like to sponsor Mr Smith on his epic journey this summer, please donate to his JustGiving page by clicking here. Any donations would be greatly received and help fund important and life changing research.

Summer Uniform from Tuesday 4

th

May 2021

From Tuesday 4th May, students do not need to wear their suit jackets/blazers in school due to the warmer weather. However, students should still be extremely smart, in line with our high standards. Top buttons on shirts must remain fastened, ties and sleeveless jumpers must be worn at all times. Short sleeve shirts may also be worn.

On days that students have practical PE, they should attend school in their PE kit and suit jacket/blazer if they wish to do so. On PE days, students may also wear black, grey or purple jogging bottoms to supplement their PE kit (not instead of their PE kit). These may have a small logo, however any type jogging bottoms with large logos, stripes or big ticks are not permitted. Under no circumstances should students wear any kind of jumper, sweatshirt or hooded top. When the weather is cold students may continue to wear a plain black, grey or purple tracksuit top or sweatshirt for PE lessons taking place outside.

The school suit jacket/blazer CANNOT be replaced with another item so, if students are cold, the suit jackets should still be worn. Any other item will not be acceptable. Sleeves should not be rolled up on jackets or shirts.

The Masked Singer – Mossley Hollins Edition!

During form time this week, students watched the launch video for The Masked Singer- Mossley Hollins Edition!

During this half-term our staff will be taking part in the first ever Masked Singer.

The launch video can be found here.

Around ten member of staff will be singing a verse/chorus of a pop song. These are voices that our students hear Monday to Friday. Surely it will be possible to tell who is singing behind the mask?

The competition will allow form groups to enter their guess for which members of staff are singing their hearts out.

The form group who guesses correctly – wins that round! Good luck everyone!

On Line Catering System

We understand there is a delay with the on line catering payment system and that money being put on the student`s account is not appearing on the system until 48 hours later. We are working with our contractor to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. Until this is resolved we will ensure all students are given a meal. Please ask your child to speak to a member of staff if their account shows no/or little funds as we do not want to see any child go without lunch.

Musical Congratulations

Our current monthly performer, as shown in the newsflash prior to Easter with a link to her performance has achieved even more success. Cara Dote in Year 9 has just passed her ABRSM grade 5 theory exam with a “Distinction” grade. This allows Cara to now undertake practical exams from grade 6 and beyond.

Our congratulations of course go out to Cara for this achievement.

Scientist of the Week

A Delightful Reflection on Local Brass Bands

This week we are showcasing a parental contribution to the Newsflash. Mrs O’Connoll is the parent of two students who attend Mossley Hollins. Her poem has been sent into the Newsflash by Miss Harrison from the English department here in school. Mrs O’Connell is a poet and has seen some of her works published. We are delighted to share this piece, which incidentally was written ‘on the hoof while waiting for her daughter’s practise to finish!

They start them young round these parts,

the more manageable cornet winning the hearts

of parents and villagers alike, sounds of the past;

mining, collieries and strikes.

The stirring sound

that drifts over the moors.

A melange of melancholy and magnificence, supported by skilful scores.

Evoking memories for the ageing, providing contrast for the teens,

whose generation we hope won’t wrangle with the troubles they had seen.

The beauty of this brass is it speaks to us all, each has a reason to respond to its call.

Music lover or not, it draws us in, to hum to, drink to, or stir our emotion within.

For me, as I write,

sipping wine as dusk falls, Dobcross Youth Band inspires these thoughts.

I realise I’m blessed to be part of this scene, simplicity is my friend tonight, I’m living the dream.

Primary Trainee Teacher Experience Day

This week Mossley Hollins welcomed a group of Primary trainee teachers into school to experience a secondary school environment for the day. A number of our students were involved in the day, as part of a student panel and also as interviewers to find out what motivated our visitors to become teachers and why they chose primary over secondary teaching. Our students also answered questions on what they felt about the move from Year 6 to Year 7 and how their experience has been this year. A big thank you to our students who did a fantastic job as part of the panel: Emily Fletcher, Hattie Newman and Amber Webster (Year 9) and to our interviewers: Noah Hartley, Isabella Robinson and Niamh Wilde (Year7). Here are some quotes from some of our year 7 students about their involvement in the day:

Reading for Pleasure

I enjoyed asking the questions and the teachers would always answer with good responses. As I asked the questions, I became less nervous. It was interesting when they answered in different ways and expanded on their answers. I learnt that you have to listen carefully to people when doing interviews.

It was good to be part of the day and it was really interesting to meet other primary teachers and find out about their different backgrounds and degrees.

Message to Parents - Celebrating sporting success and achievement outside of school.

In PE we are producing a display in the PE department that celebrates the sporting success and achievements of our pupils outside of school. Despite the lock down limiting the opportunities for our pupils to take part in their sports we know that a number of pupils will still be excelling and performing at the highest level outside of school.

Please could you email Mr Doodson of Mrs Dodd ([email protected] or [email protected].) with information and pictures (if possible) of your son/daughter so we can celebrate and recognise their outstanding talent in sport. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you!
