PSC Gives

Boost

to Solar and Low-Income Energy Programs

TALLAHASSEE

-

The five-member Public Service Commission (PSC) has

approved two new demand-side management (DSM) programs created by Progress Energy Florida, Inc. (PEF). The DSM programs are designed to reduce peak power usage in a cost-effective manner. The panel also approved changes to six other DSM programs at PEF.

The two new programs are the Renewable Energy Program and the Neighborhood Energy Saver Program (NES).

The Renewable Energy Program provides incentives for the installation of solar technology on homes and schools in PEF’s territory. The program has two parts. The first part gives residential customers enrolled in its energy management program $450 to install a solar water heater. The second part allows residential customers to donate the credits accumulated through their participation in DSM programs to a special fund to install solar photovoltaic systems on local schools. The NES program aims to assist low-income families by implementing a comprehensive package of electric conservation measures at no cost to the consumer. A central focus of this program is educating families to use energy efficiency techniques.

Other residential programs modified include the Home Energy Improvement, New Construction and the Residential Year Round Energy Management programs. The commercial and industrial programs modified include the Standby Generation, Better Business and the Commercialhdustrial New Construction programs.
